John Updike's most successful works were the late 1960's to the late 1970's. During that time many things in the world were going on. John Updike along with the millions of other Americans had to live through it. As you already know the first astronaut to land on the moon happened during this time. Also the president who paved the way for the space program John F. Kennedy was killed only a few years before. It took many Americans to get over the assassination Kennedy on November 22, 1963, in Dallas Texas. His successor also took many major steps to better America. Lyndon B. Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Also a name that is always mentioned with the Civil Rights Movement is Martin Luther King Jr. He too made a lot of his famous contribution to America during this time. As all of these people are leading the people of America there is also a War going on. The Vietnam War was by far the worst for our troops. We lost many thousands of troops to the war. All the while John Updike is writing his stories and novels on his way to becoming one of the best authors of the modern era. The American society also lost another great leader during this time, Martin Luther King Jr. He was also assassinated, in 1968. This along with the assassination of John F. Kennedy puzzled the American people. But many people went into a frenzy after the martin Luther King Jr. assassination causing riots. All over the country people were in an uproar, many African Americans. The country had never had to deal with the death of such a prominent African American leader. The country also went through some very strong leaders out of the government including presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.
