A brilliant and fluid forward, Ronaldo was one of international soccer's biggest stars of the 1990s and Brazil's biggest soccer hero since Pele. He was born on the 22nd of September 1976 in Bento Ribeiro, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. In 1988, Ronaldo joins his first club, Tennis Club Valqueire, where he plays indoor soccer. In 1994, Parreira, the coach, reveals the final list of 22 players, he includes Ronaldo in the list for the national squad; a selection that pleases all Brazilians who believe in his talent. Brazil went on to win the 1994 World Cup. Ronaldo becomes one of the youngest players to ever have competed in the world cup at 17 years old. Ronaldo leaves his Brazilian friends after the World Cup and flies to Europe and PSV Eindhoven where he has difficulties with the Dutch language. He becomes Best Scorer of the Dutch season when he's just 18 years old. One day he complains about a pain in his knees and had to undergo surgery. He stops playing for four months. Ronaldo manages to recover and goes to the United States for the Olympic Games. He was disappointed by the loss in the semi-finals against Nigeria. He was named FIFA's World Footballer of the Year in 1996 and 1997, becoming both the youngest player to win the award and the only player to win the award in consecutive years. He soon transfers to the club Inter Milan after they made him an offer of 27 million dollars, the figure was so high that no one expected an offer to be made. In 1998, Ronaldo is once more competing for the World Cup but he fell ill right before the finals against France and Brazil had to settle for runner up. In 1999, he had to undergo surgery on his knee again and was told by his doctor that he was fit to play again. However, during the final of the Italian cup, he collapses with pain from a broken knee.
