Parable Of The Talents

             Octavia Butler, a well known African American Author with the love in creating sci-fi
             books, took it a step further with the 2nd novel in this series. "Parable of the Talents", the
             continuation from her first book "Parable of Sowers", showed readers a difference in sci-fi
             approach. Octavia, known for other books like Kindred that took real people and put in them
             make believe situations, has created a book just of that. She took what we look at as the future,
             slavery and destruction and put it all into one book. This was an obvious adventure for the
             In this book, Butler gave us an in-depth look into the life of Lauren Oya Olamina, who is
             also the main character. It consisted of journal entries that Olamina left to her daughter in hopes
             of giving her a part of her life so she could learn and continue with what she started. Earthseed, a
             religion created by Olamina, was what she looked to preserve for her daughter, Larkin, to keep.
             Butler showed us the downfalls and the good times through the eyes of Olamina. She showed
             that even with the beliefs that we have, there are always consequences from them, and Olamina
             Earthseed. By hearing this name, you would probably think of it as more of things dealing
             with nature and or plants. It actually did kind of deal with nature, and that was Olamina's reason
             for this religion, some what. She was the founder and creator of Earthseed with a good number
             of followers. "God is Change" a quote that she followed and one that you see throughout this
             book. She believed every action, every event or conflict was because of change or natural reasons.
