Islam

             In watching the movie, "Islam," from the Religions of the World Series, I came to the realization that some of the ideas that I had about the Muslim religion were far from true. To begin with, Islam is the second in size to Christianity. The Muslim religion is practiced all over the world. The Philippines, India, Indonesia, Soviet Union, and Africa are just a few areas of the world where this religion is present.
             In the beginning there was a prophet named Mohammed. The word prophecy means God communicates. In the 7th century Mohammed and his people were forced to leave their homes. This event was referred to as the Hijra which means migration. The people left Mecca for the city to Medina. The Hijra marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar. The calendar is based on the cycles of the moon. In the year 630 Mohammed conquered and regained Mecca. Two years later Mohammed passed away.
             A misconception that some people might have about the Muslims is that they believe in another God referred to as Allah. This is very wrong. "Allah" is the Arabic word for God.
             The people who practice the religion of Islam are referred to as Mulims. The word Muslim means "submitters," and the word Islam means "state of the mind." Muslims are all about love and purity. Islam is a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness.
             Islam is a complete way of life for Muslims. The Qur'an is also a constitution of the state. It is the moral code for human conduct. It also regulates ritual behavior, stipulates proper clothing, and supplies rules for personal hygiene. The Qur'an is a record of the exact words that were revealed to Mohammed. It contains 114 surahs or chapters. According to the Koran Mohammed was the seal of the prophets. The Koran is an object that can only be touched, read, and recited when doing rituals.
