             Compare the ways in which Alice Walker and Jeanette Winterson reveal the impact of strong women on the lives of Celie and Jeanette.
             In both books there are strong women who affect the lives of the narrators in many different ways. Shug and Sophia are used as tools to shape and mould of Celie's changing life; in the same way Elsie is used to transport information to Jeanette in order for her views to change of religion and other important beliefs. Alice Walker and Jeanette Winterson use all of their strong women characters, to eventually produce strong women of their narrators. This is not only heart touching but also inspiring for every women out there that is afraid to speak or act.
             Alice Walker uses Shug and Sophia as instruments in order for Celie to flourish. By using the characters as she did she enabled the reader to see that Celie was strong underneath but needed help in order to find herself. Celie is surrounded by powerful women at Mr ______'s house, which enables her to gain an incite into how stronger women cope with the world that they live in. Bizarrely enough both women that she uses as role models have extremely different qualities, which make the book exceptionally inspiring.
             Shug, even before Celie has met her is introduced as a rousing character. She is perceived as strong sexually, enabling her to gain what ever she wants by her stunning beauty and powerful voice. Celie is in awe of her and stares at her picture at whatever chance she has. She recognises that Shug had had a sexual relationship with Mr ____, and because of her desperation to become her she puts her arm around him!
