Joyce Carol Oates has an interesting way of writing, which is displayed in her stories. "Why Don't You Come Live with Me It's Time," and "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" are two stories that share many important similarities and differences. Connie and Claire come from similar backgrounds, but their ages in the stories are one difference that sets them apart.
Despite Connie and Claire's location (Midwest and Hammond, NY), they grew up with a very similar family setting. Connie and Claire lived in small towns which allowed for many family gatherings, and the chance to know their extended family. Similarly neither girl shared a great appreciation for their immediate family members.
Like Claire, Connie did not show a great attachment for her mother. Both girls were constantly belittled and judged by their mothers. When Connie would look in the mirror, her mother would remark, "Stop gawking at yourself. Who are you? You think you're so pretty?" (Oates). In like manner, when Claire would come home from a visit to her grandmother's house, Claire's mother would inquire, "Did you spoil your appetite again" (Oates 884). Both mothers had also showed a bit of jealousy towards their daughters. Connie's mother was jealous of Connie's beauty, whereas Claire's mother seemed jealous of Claire's relationship with her grandmother.
Due to the strained relationship that Claire and Connie shared regarding their families, both girls sought comfort outside their homes. Connie for instance sought comfort from boys and music. This comfort was fulfilled by sneaking to the local burger joint where she was able to flirt with the boys while listening to her favorite music.
