Thomas Paine's(Paine) argument is that British rule encompasses society to overrules all-natural human rights. The power is given to one man who squeezes your every worth to benefit himself or, in this case, Britain. Paine outlines the problem with British rule in several different ways. He first attacks Britain at its core. Paine explains the problem with a monarchy. He states, "Monarchy is ranked in scriptures as one of the sins of the Jews." Here Paine is taking a biblical standpoint and saying that it is wrong to have one ruler by God. In his pamphlet, he explains how the Jewish people begged for a king and were punished. Paine then takes a shot at the political aspect of British rule. He states, "To say the constitution of England is a union of three powers reciprocally checking each other, is farcical, either the words have no meaning, or they are flat contradictions." Here he is pushing that the three powers are not in balance. It is just a lie for the people to believe that there is some system of checks and balances. He is also saying that these are just words on paper that mean nothing more than the paper they are written on. Paine then attacks the fact that neither the King nor Parliaments have ever really been amongst the people. He states, "the king is shut from the world." Paine is in awe at how a system that does not form can have any clues on what the people want or need?
Paine then begins his attack on why America should get rid of British rule. He feels that America should be freed from all ties with any country and person. Paine states, "the business of it will soon be too weighty, and intricate, to be managed with any tolerable convenience." Here Paine is proclaiming that soon England will not be able to handle America's businesses because it will be much bigger and more complicated for England to handle at a distance.
