"Swoosh." This phrase would never be used if it wasn't for the creator of basketball, Dr. James Naismith. Most people know one thing about Naismith, but nobody really knows about him. Such as his childhood days, his education, his jobs, and how he actually invented the game basketball. There are things to learn about the life of the founder of basketball, Dr. James Naismith.
Dr. James Naismith was born on November 6th, 1861, in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. James was the oldest son of his parents John and Margaret Naismith. After his parents caught typhoid fever when he was 10, he and his brother and sister were orphaned; they spent the next two years living with their grandmother in Bennie's Corners. Four years later in 1873, James grandmother died. The Naismith kids, James, Annie, and Robbie, were left under the care of their uncle, Peter Young. James was raised most of his childhood in Bennie's Corners, Canada. It is a small town of 75 people, but didn't lack in facilities. The town was equipped with a school, a church, a blacksmith shop, a shoemaker shop, a cooperage, a carriage shop, a general merchandise store, and a post office. In the community, he was known as a strong and skillful boy. At school however, his report cards were very poor. He was a popular kid at school though because he was talented in physical activities. He then went on to finish grades 1-12.
Naismith attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He started a four year Bachelor of Arts program. He studied and worked very hard to make it through school. Even though he was very talented in physical activities, he decided to not join anything and focus mainly on his education. Until one day when two students talked him in to joining the athletic program for him to stay in shape. He participated in the gymnastic and rugby program.
