Jack and Jill drove up the hill to fetch a case of beer. Jack had a wreck and broke his neck and Jill died shortly after. On the weekends a lot of people make the decision to go to a party or bar, have a few drinks, and relax with friends. Over the years, people have repeatedly made the dangerous decision to drive after drinking. The consequences can be as severe as resulting in the death of yourself or a victim. Another consequence that may follow, could take part in a legal action such as being issued a DUI (driving under the influence) or a DWI (driving while intoxicated). Because of the prevalence of these incidents, national organizations, including M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and S.A.D.D. (Students Against Drunk Driving) have developed.
Whether it has been a next door neighbor, a best friend, or someone as prestigious as Princess Diana; we all know someone who has been involved in an accident involving alcohol. Research indicates that, "In 1997, 16,189 Americans were killed by alcohol-related crashes, accounting for nearly half of all traffic fatalities" (Internet). All these unfortunate deaths could have been prevented if there had been a decision to not drink and drive. Imagine surviving in a crash involving alcohol, and dealing with the guilt of knowing that sobriety could have saved someone's life. Princess Diana's bodyguard reconciles his guilt everyday, that he could have done something to stop the recklessness of the driver. Even though some people place the blame upon the Paparazzi, "I think that the fault is of the driver because he had ultimate control of the vehicle. He had a lot of better options than to be intoxicated and drive at extremely high rates of speed" (Gary, 1). Princess Diana was!
