Thesis: In the book Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, a prediction of the real 1984 was made that showed a totalitarian government and slave like citizens.
Eric Arthur Blair was born on 25 June 1903 in Motihari, Bengal, India (Oxford 700). The middle child of English parents and was noticed to have exceptional writing skills at a young age. At the age of thirteen he was offered two scholarships and chose the one to Eton. He attended from 1917 to 1921. After the scholarship he decided to join the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. When home on leave in 1927 he felt guilty for being part of an oppressive system and resigned (Oxford 275). From 1929 to 1935 money was scarce and people had a hard time making a living (British 276). During that time he changed his name to George Orwell after the Orwell River in Suffolk, England and made money by tutoring and teaching at cheap private schools (Literature 251). In 1936 he traveled to Spain to write articles on the Spanish civil war. Once Orwell arrived he was compelled to join a group called P.O.U.M. During the war Orwell was involved in the propaganda of promoting the efforts. At times he was aware of it and at other he was just told what was acceptable. Orwell also served as a sergeant in the Home Guard. He attempted to get a book called Animal Farm published during WWII but was refused because it was a satirical novel that poked fun at Russia.
