Workplace Observation

             I currently hold a position at a large company named Collins&Aikman. This was a big jump for me, moving from a small family business to a giant automotive supplier. What amazed me the most is the fact that an eight billion dollar company ran much smoother than a ten-man crew. This is all made possible by a very well organized structure. Our company structure is costumer based; therefore we have separate business units for each major customer (in this case General Motors, Ford and Dymler Chrysler). Each business unit has a number of teams that work together towards achieving the goals set by a strategic plan. In one way or another, every team member is involved in designing the strategic plan. By doing so, everyone has a better understanding on what is expected from him or her. Obviously this is a very flat structure and for that reason is easier to manage. The quality of work is greater since employees can concentrate on the quality of the product rather that making senseless charts and reports for different layers of management. This kind of structure is also beneficial for the inter-company communication. Weekly meetings are held to keep the communication lines open, especially between the design and manufacturing departments. There are also weekly supplier meetings that are designed to eliminate any roadblocks that could result in failing to deliver the product on time. Nevertheless costumer based meetings take place as needed to communicate all of their requirement and making sure that the product is designed and manufactured to the desired specifications. It is also imperative that every team member possesses strong communication skills, since the major portion of the job is emphasized on that.
