The History of News, its Corruption, and What Should Be Done

             Freedom of press is one of the most important things about our constitution. It gave our founding fathers the right to slander the English about unfair taxes and other issues. Without this right, the press would not have been able to discover the Watergate scandal. The press is a strong weapon; it can ruin any persons' reputation. But what most people do not realize is that the press is being abused today. How can you be sure you are not being lied to? A lie is a lie, everyone who knows the truth knows that, but when the lie is published to the ignorant public as the truth, it becomes so.
             The newspaper is the oldest massively produced and distributed form of press in this country. The printing press in America set the Revolution into full swing. It allowed for anyone to read what was happening in the country and it stirred up a lot of emotion. The printing press first started in China in 1041 and was remade in Germany by Johann Gutenberg in the 1450s. The original method of printing was block printing, pressing sheets of paper into individually carved wooden blocks. The use of movable type in printing was invented in 1041 AD by Bi Sheng in China. Bi Sheng used clay type, which broke easily, but eventually Goryeo sponsored the production of metal type.
             Previously, books were copied mainly in monasteries, where scribes wrote them out by hand. This took a long time to make a book so there were not very many books around. In the 15th century some nobles refused to have printed books in their libraries, they valued their handcopied manuscripts. The discovery and establishment of printing books with moveable type marks a giant leap in the way information was transferred in Europe.
             Today the newspaper is a common news source. The newspaper has had a long history, but it is now on the decline. Less and less newspapers are being bought, primarly because of television, radio, and the internet. The United States today sells about 5...
