Asthma Research

In order to conduct a search on the topic. "Does education of the patient and the family in self-care management result in improved health and functional health in adult asthmatics?," I first looked for key words in the question. First I put in "patient, education and asthmatic". The responses did not fit properly; they were more schooling oriented. I next put in "adult, self-care, asthma and education." I was closer, but the education was skewing the responses. Finally, I put in "adult, self-care and asthma." I also requested articles after 2003, because I wanted newer studies. This brought up about 227 articles; many of them were oriented toward specific ethnic/cultural groups; these were not applicable. I thus went with the two that appeared to be the most comprehensive and informative on the subject. The first article, "Can asthma control be improved by understanding patient's perspective I thought should be included. This was not

Baptism: Different Understandings Between Christian Groups

Baptism: Research two different understandings between Christian groups of the ritual of baptism; include each one's justification of their practice. Identify grounds for possibility of each coming to respect the other's practice. (Main differences occur on proper age when the ritual should be performed and what baptism actually accomplishes.) For Roman Catholics, who are practitioners of infant baptism, to be baptized into the church is to accept the church's first sacrament, and is the first step for the entry of the believer into the Christian community: "Holy Baptism holds the first place among the sacraments, because it is the door of the spiritual life; for by it we are made membe

Pivotal Incident Explanation of Christianity Between Jesus Exit of the Roman Empire

Pivotal Incident: Explain what you think is a pivotal event in the emergence of Christianity between Jesus' exit from the scene and the end of the Roman Empire. Perhaps the pivotal incident in the history of early Christianity, and its enforced acceptance by the great majority of the Western world as the one true religion, as opposed to a persecuted cult, is the vision of the Emperor Constantine. "The emperor Constantine has rightly been called the most important emperor of Late Antiquity. His powerful personality laid the foundations of post-classical European civilization; his reign was eventful and highly dramatic. His victory at the Milvian Bridge counts among the most decisive moments in world history, while his

Christianity

Discuss the values and teaching of Jesus and why, given the context and expectations of the times and the different factions among the Jews in the Second Temple Era (which you identify in your answer), it is no surprise he generated controversy At the time of its genesis, Judaism was in a state of internal turmoil. "It [was]... during the time of the second temple up through the tenth century that [was] perhaps the most fertile period for the development of Jewish sects. The Roman occupation and

Faith and Diplomacy: Analysis

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the essay "Faith and Diplomacy" by Madeleine Albright. Specifically it will discuss the religious support for the war in Iraq, and how faith-based influence has helped create and continue the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism. The war in Iraq is based on the war on terror throughout the world, and initially, the American people believed the war was a result of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) that were being stored in the country. That turned out to be false, and many experts believe the war in Iraq is actually based on faith, specifically the American Christian faith, fighting "good" against "evil." This foreign policy is disruptive at best, and indicates that foreign policy based on religion can be extremely damaging to all the nations involved. First, some background on the war in Iraq. The war began in March 2003, when U.S. and coalition forces invaded the country on the pretext of seeking out and destroying

Jewish Identity

Since Biblical times, great importance has been placed upon the sense of the Jewish identity and the necessity for maintaining its purity. As the chosen people of God, Jews were for example not allowed to worship other gods or follow the practices of other nations. Observing the law and practices stipulated by God was the distinguishing factor that provided the Jews with their unique identity. Observing the elements of this identity is also what provided the nation with victory in battle and with the eventual attainment of the Pr

Rabbinic Judaism: Compilation of the Mishnah

One of the most important developments in Rabbinic Judaism is the compilation of the Mishnah. There are two significant reasons for this choice: firstly, the Mishnah constitutes the first written record of the Oral Torah, while it is also considered the first work of Rabbinic Judaism. Before the Mishnah, Jewish religious teaching was compiled in the written Torah, which was clarified by means of the Oral Tradition. These were combined in the Mishnah. According to Lisa Katz (2008), the Mishnah

Biblical Judaism

The Hasmonean dynasty can be considered to be a turning point in the history of the biblical Jewish ancient state. It represented the time in history that marked two important moments in the Jewish culture: on the one hand, the end of the Maccabean Wars, and on the other hand, the start of the Roman rule over Palestine. The most important contribution of the reign of the Hasmonean dynasty was the period of development for the Jewish people. One of the most visible changes that took place at the

Child Maltreatment

The conception of what constitutes maltreatment of children and in fact the whole concept of what constitutes a designation of being a "child" has changed over time, like many other societal definitions. The designation of a child as a vulnerable member of society that requires special protection by parents and others is in fact a relatively new concept, and this is especially true of the social designation of adolescence. (Kellman, 2005, p. 81) Historically, childhood has been seen as a sort of temporary designation of years where the "child" was expected to act as much like and look as much like an adult as possible and engage in as much work as their physical body could endure to help support the family. "To the Puritans, children were miniature and deficient adults who had to be restrained from wasting time on sinful play." (Kellman, 2005, p. 81) This idea may have been an aspect of the fact that Puritan belief was wholly founded in traditional Christian theolog

Employment Laws: FLSA & COBRA – Both in Need of a Fix

FLSA & COBRA – Both in Need of a Fix Question ONE: Are these two laws as effective today as they were at the time they were passed into law? Question TWO: What recommendations are to be made in terms of upgrades and improvements? COBRA: It can be safely said – with some qualification – that it is, in many cases, still an effective program, and still very much needed albeit it is very expensive. In fact it may be needed more than ever, given the present economy in America. Why is this answer given with qualification? Why is it needed – with some changes implemented – now perhaps more than ever? The first part of this paper will present material that explains why today's workers need a new, improved COBRA. The present economy is extremely shaky and working families do not as a general rule feel secure in this economy. Polls show that the mainstream of American citizens list the economy as often as – or more often than – the war in Iraq

Stephen King: Favorite Writer

My favorite writer is Stephen King. There are several reasons that lead me to this choice. First of all, I think he is my favorite writer because of the atmosphere he manages to create and describe in his novels. While being categorized as horror genre, his novels are often scary because of the atmosphere he manages to create rather than from tormenting, horrifying images. Throughout "The Shining", for example, the bo

Subaltern History in Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children and Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things

History is a crucial element in almost all of the Postcolonial and Postmodernist writing. The way in which history is approached in postcolonial writing is rather complex. Thus on the one hand, history is entirely denied as a concept by the postmodernists who disbelieve in the objective existence of a fixed reality and a fixed, orderly arrangement of things. Secondly, history is combated as one of the instruments used for dominance and colonization. The certainty with which the imperialists oppress the colonized peoples comes from the historical backdrop, which is the equivalent of a fixed and unchangeable account of facts and events. The notion of "subaltern history" then comes to replace or supplant the common views of the past as they were constructed by the dominant races or nations. An alternative view of the historical past is thus given by the members of culturally subordinated groups. Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children and Arundhati Roy's The God o

God's Covenant with the Israelites and Abraham

In the most simplest of terms, a covenant is a binding agreement between two or more parties, but in the Old Testament, the term covenant is most closely allied with the prophet Abraham and his covenant with God (i.e., Jehovah). Generally speaking, the covenant of the Israelites included God's blessings for honoring it and the consequences for ignoring it, and when the covenant was accepted by the Israelites, "God and Israel entered into a covenant relationship, a binding commitment to honor and fulfill their respective roles" as members of this special relationship with God ("Chapter 1," 2008, Internet). According to Julia Mitchell Corbett, writing in Religion in America, this special relationship with God was to be embodied in everything the Israelites did or thought and is very closely linked to the Ten Commandments as found in the story of Moses and the exodus of Israelite slaves from the clutches of Rameses II of ancient Egypt. Some of these commandment

Gandhi and Family

Mahatma Gandhi is well known and recognized for the leadership he provided for the Indian state to peacefully relinquish English oversight by withdrawing from British institutions, denying British awards, and, most important, by learning the art of self-reliance. Yet Gandhi's thoughts on family, although not as well known, are none the less historically pertinent. His concepts about family as an institution and national symbol of support were a central point to his overall political and social stance. From the nuclear family, to the entire community and nation of India to the world at large, Gandhi strived for one family of mankind. It is important to understand that when Gandhi uses the word "family" he does not only mean the nuclear family as is the common definition. "Family" is also a metaphor for a group of people who are concerned about the same things as in a national family or the global family of humankind. In his autobiography The Story of My Experi

TV Violence

As soon as viewers turn on the television news, they are bound to hear about incidents taking place that include some form of violence. "So long as death sells, we can expect to see more of the same," states Sheryl Grana, associate professor of sociology at the University of Minnesota (Torr, 2006, p. 26). For example, the event could be a plane crash, a suicide bombing, a murder in a local community or an assassination. Very few if any positive items are reported. In addition, a large number of the weekly programs and movies involve some form of violent content. Many of these shows are scheduled during "family hours," or when most children are still awake and watching TV. Controversy exists regarding the impact of such violence, especially on youth. Based on research conducted on the effects of media violence, it is still inconclusive whether seeing such programming on a regular basis causes greater youth aggression. Regardless if this cause-and-effect question stil

Fahrenheit 451 and 911

The Constitution provided the right to free speech and this right afforded us to voice our issues, concerns, discontent or even salutations to how our government acts or does. Previously, the freedom of speech was expressed through the power of the pen or oration in different gatherings but modernization of the media changed all that. The Internet, live news broadcasts and even the movies became tools for free expression and Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 is a prevailing example of how a civil act is expressed. Some sectors may say that Moore may be a bit too critical of the Bush Administration when he released the movie Fahrenheit 9/11but others applaud it as a wake up call for what was happening during George W. Bush's administration. In summary, the movie is about what occurred after 9/11 terrorist attacks on US soil and how certain events before and after could be traced to how the Bush Administration has been poorly handling the government. At the height of the 9/11 att

ESL: A Two-way Dual Language Program

A Two-way Dual Language Program contains Spanish-speaking students and English-speaking students in the same educational environment to provide communicative and academic language development. This is through an interactive and cross-cultural setting. Program participation begins in kindergarten, which continues through the fifth grade. The Two-way Dual Language Program develops bilingualism and bi literacy in all students through instruction of all curriculum areas. The amount of Spanish and English instruction for both ELL's and SSL's is both instruction in English and Spanish in most schools. There is a 90/10 model, wherein instruction in Kinder is initiated 90% of the time in Spanish and 10 % in English. Spanish is decreased and English is increased until reaching a 50/50 ratio by fifth grade. The ultimate goal is bilingualism and bi-literacy for all students. From there, Two-way bilingual immersion (TWBI) programs integrate students who are ELLs and English proficient (EP)

True Collaboration

"True collaboration" is generally thought of as a "mutually beneficial" and "well-defined relationship" which is entered into by two or more parties, groups, organizations or individuals who hope to achieve "results they are more likely to achieve together than alone" (Gies, 2007). And one of the first steps to take in the process – because a strong collaborative relationship between the two parties is a "process" not a "goal" – leading up to collaboration between marketing and business sectors, according to University of Denver professor Greg Gies, is to "pay as much attention to how the two parties work together" as to the work itself. By paying close attention to how the two parties intend to work together -- embracing teamwork, synergy, and cooperation – the process should flow smoothly, professor Gies explains. There are six fundament factual understandings that must be shared when entering into any process that leads to soli

Transcendentalism Movement

The philosophical thought has been widely focused on the relationship between man and nature on the one hand, and the society on the other. The transcendentalist movement was vivid in acknowledging the role of the direct connection between man and a superior environment which transcends the physical boundaries and the empirical experiences. In exchange, their reference point in the philosophical analysis is the intuitive nature of the human being. Throughout history, there have been various approaches on the matter, from lyrics to composite works elaborating on the main elements that offer man a transcendentalist nature, such as intuiti

HRM and Organizational Effectiveness

Introduction: Daktronics is a leading manufacturer of dynamic visual communication display systems, most notably LED displays. It's recent entrance into the rapidly growing Chinese marketplace requires an incentive pay program that facilitates the achievement of organizational strategies and improves organizational effectiveness, there in this hyper-competitive market. As such, two sets of steps in program design will be utilized. The first set of steps is that laid out by Holmes (2005). Holmes outlines a five-step program for creating a diversity program, which can be applied to this incentive pay program. These include: clarification of the benefits of the diversity program, identification of SMART goals, development of action plans, definition of performance expectations, and evaluation of impact on performance. The second is the steps outlined by Becker and Huselid (2003). These three steps include: clearly defining the business strategy, drawing a map of the casual fl

Managing the Organization's Structure

AES Corporation is a global power producer that has recently been challenged by the largest of their Latin American investments, Eletropaulo Metropolitana SA. The company, the largest electricity distribution company in Latin America, has been accused of colluding with Enron, and purposely driving down their stock prices. Their default on payments on a $1.2 billion loan from National Development Bank of Brazil means the bank could seize the company, which, in the end, would actually improve the AES balance sheet, according to Hamilton (2003). This individual problem demonstrates a greater challenge for the company, organization wide. This paper overviews AES' organizational culture, their structure, and why the organization is going through major restructuring. Managing the Organization's Structure Introduction: AES Corporation is a global power producer that has recently been challenged by the largest of their Latin American investments, Eletropaulo Metropolitana SA. Judicial Bench and Racial Discrimination

Regardless of how people might promote the role of the judiciary in curbing racial discrimination, there will always be some people who would complain of lack of judicial assistance and some might even claim that justice system is designed to keep the racial order intact. Despite these claims, it is worth mentioning that over the years, courts in the United States have decided many cases of discrimination and while some may have appeared biased, most actually sought to curb or reduce racial discrimination in all facets of life. In this regard, we have the 9th, the 13th and the 14th amendments that were proposed by Congress and were repeatedly interpreted by the courts to give them meaning and to make it easier for people to understand what their rights were under these amendments. The ninth amendment was meant to protect the rights of those who are not specifically covered by the Constitution. But amendments or laws are nothing with interpretation

Election of a President

The process by which the United States follows according to the election of the commander in chief – the president, is systematically implemented according to an official infrastructure of dynamics that are dictated by an array of sub-systems that are essentially of the people and by the people. These systems have constantly undergone growth and innovation as pertinent to the deployment of the amended laws and procedures that conform to the progression of the U.S. Government. Through the course of the ever-developing election process, every aspect of the electoral standards has proven circumstantial as basis for the current economical factors that have outlaid each election period. Through the history of the presidential elections, several oppositional sides, though both as mainframes encircling a democracy government; were developed into the constructs of separate parties with separate primaries th

Time Studies

After we had completed employment documents and toured the plant my supervisor and his team explained to my co-op fellow and me what he expected from us and how he wished this project to be completed.
