Speech on Disability and Caregivers in Australia

Disability is defined as a condition which may restrict a person's mental, sensory or mobility functions to undertake or perform a task in the same way as a person who does not have a disability (DWA, 2012). The people that assist people with disabilities are known as Primary carers. These people are defined as the person who provides the most informal assistance to a person with one or more disabilities (ABS, 1999). My name is _____________, and I stand before you today as a representative of the Parliament to present and provide you with a comprehensive review and evaluation of Australia's policy and services towards not only disabled persons, but also the backbones of their will to keep on living, their families who are overwhelmingly faced with the challenges of living with a disabled person. It has come to my attention carers are not getting the recognition they deserve from the government. Today I am here to justify the necessary improvements that need to be implanted. Before

Project Management and the Responsibility Matrix

The purpose of the responsibility matrix is to state who is responsible for different parts of a project and who has authority to make or approve decisions. Projects can suffer when too many groups consider an activity as their responsibility. The responsibility matrix dramatically improves project communication, not only by identifying who's in charge and who's doing the work, but also groups that need to be consulted and those who merely need to know what's been decided. Here are a few of the benefits that the responsibility matrix provides: > Resolves conflicts over who's responsible - Reviewing the responsibility matrix with stakeholders during project planning can identify areas of the project that have multiple groups who think they're in charge. By working through disagreements at the beginning of a project, one can resolve those conflicts before someone has to make an important decision. > Identifies orphaned areas of the project

On Being a Vegetarian

I've been a vegetarian for fifteen years, and it always makes me laugh when people act like giving up meat is equivalent to death. I stopped eating meat when I was six because I didn't like the texture; it had nothing to do with where it came from. Before then, the only reason I would eat meat was that my parents forced me to. There's just something about it being so chewy...it doesn't sit well with me. Sometimes it's hard to go out to eat, especially when my family or friends want to go to a seafood place or a steakhouse because there are just very limited choices. I've survived though, and I actually eat more than a lot of people because I like to run and bike. There are plenty of options other than meat that fills you up just the same and tastes delicious. I eat pasta at least 3 or 4 times a week because it's filling and cheap and easy to make for a quick dinner. Veggie burgers allow you to get the delicious taste of a burger with about a quart

Matisse's Painting - Purple Robe and Anemones

Henri Matisse's painting Purple Robe and Anemones, from 1937, hangs in the Baltimore Museum of Art. This painting depicts his model Lydia Delectorskaya in a purple robe with a vase of anemones in the foreground. Matisse did not intend to capture his subject realistically. Instead, the painting explodes with color, rhythm, space, and line and dares to manipulate reality. In Purple Robe and Anemones, Matisse manipulates line to create harmony throughout the painting. The black serpentine lines on the vase echo the serpentine shape of the robe on the model as well as the white lines on the back wall. The patterns he creates with lines on the table that holds the vase echoes the pattern on the model's skirt. Lines here are used to describe different degrees of form, giving the vase a 3 dimensional form, but flattening other objects such as the model herself. The bold lines define the objects yet give the model a flat form with no variation in line. All the lines are very clear, and not blurred giving a static feel to the painting. They do not vary grea

Workplace Privacy Policies

Workers of the world are exposed to many types of privacy-invasive monitoring while earning a living. These include drug testing, closed-circuit video monitoring, Internet monitoring and filtering, E-mail monitoring, instant message monitoring, phone monitoring, location monitoring, personality and psychological testing, and keystroke logging. Employers do have an interest in monitoring in order to address security risks, sexual harassment, and to ensure the acceptable performance of employees. The increased use of technology in the workplace has created new concerns for both employers and employees in the area of privacy. Use of email and the Internet can immensely reduce operating costs through automation of human tasks, facilitate communication on innumerable levels, clearly increase efficiency in almost all tasks, allow for geographic and other business expansion, and less obviously, it can even reduce the amount of real estate and inventory that companies require. While this tech

Conserving Energy - Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources

Conserving energy is important, since the world will not be able to depend on nonrenewable resources in the future. Nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be replaced such as natural gas, coal, and oil. Conserving energy will lessen the need for nonrenewable resources, which will be beneficial to the environment, by helping to preserve more natural environments. Energy allows humans to live comfortable lives by powering our modern day conveniences. Automobiles and electricity are two common items that are dependent on a steady stream of energy. Energy consumption around the world has been on an increasingly uphill climb, for many years now. Society needs to work towards understanding and utilizing renewable resources because nonrenewable resources are depleting, which will eventually lead

Reflection of the Moon

Once in a daydream I came upon a pond cloaked in the darkness of night. The grass shuffled past my legs as I came near the waters, and sat by its dark beauty. I looked up at to see the sky alight with stars, and a clear full moon gazing down at me. It was one and only breathtaking sight. However, my neck developed a cramp, so I had to lower my head. Then, I had a great idea. Why not look upon the reflection of the moon in the pond? I edged close to the pond until I was right above it, and searched for its reflection. As expected, the moon's beauty was not marred by the pond's mirror. Instead, the blue-black of the night pond complemented the white of the full moon. Suddenly, the pond reflection stirred and disappeared. The place was a tiny, I met a white creature. Meeting the creature was a stunning experience because it was unique to see, strange to touch, and unbelievable to hear. The creature came closer to me, so I could see the tiny white scales that covered its body. I

Greg Knox - Inventor

Heroes and role models influence lives everywhere, often without even knowing it. Celebrities, relatives, friends; even book characters impact teens' lives, leading to better choices and clear goals for the future. Greg Knox earned the position of my role model. Greg is a successful inventor and entrepreneur who always stands by what he knows is right, and I admire those qualities in him. I value traits such as those, and applaud Greg's authoritative take on life. A figure who has taken fruition from his propositions and has scarcely backed down from the prime choice he selected I look up to him for that. Greg Knox exceeds the norm; rather than tarry and allow success to find him, Greg ventured out himself to wrangle the beast. Knox invented the Trunk Tracker, initiated a company, Synthecom, and engineered for NASA. Knox's most commendable achievement? The creation of the Trunk Tracker. The Trunk Tracker aids the user by allowing them to tune in to var

The Occupy Wall Street Protest

Stephanie Guercio Professor Robert SOC100 Fall '11 October 24, 2011 Occupy Wall Street Protest Many citizens are feeling cheated out of the American dream, whereas others feel the modern view of the American dream is simply misinterpreted. While certain people are trying to overthrow the government, there are others who are trying to keep the current class structure in place. There are tons of opposing views but both parties bring up great points. Many monumental events have occurred in the Occupy Wall Street protest movement and the media has portrayed the situation in a certain light. Some Weberian and Marx' concepts help to explain the conflict as well as what led to its original genesis. This a a class struggle in Marx's sense and the only way it will end is if those controlling politics, money and power, see eye to eye with those who are currently occupying wall street. Those involved with the protest movement stand up against corporate power

Are Private Schools Better Than Public Schools?

The debate between public schools and private schools is never ending, and choosing sides is often difficult and biased. Deciding what is right for a child, whether its based on financial or social limitations, is not easy, and it varies greatly across communities. There are many distinct benefits of each type of school that many parents seem to overlook, yet they play a big role in the quality of education in the long run. The biggest factor that separates public schools from private schools comes down to simple money. The fact that public schools cost almost zero dollars for the parents is usually a big influence on choosing their kid's school. There is, however, a big down side to this;since the public school system is federally funded, this leaves room for unexpected budget cuts and shortfalls in financial help. Public schools are part of a greater school system and have to abide by a federally set curriculum. Private schools, however, must be able to generate a source of income for the school to stay afloat. This mostly comes from tuition costs but also is greatly

A Lesson Learned: A Childhood Memory

It was 10:00 am and a beautiful summer day. The summer of 2011 was the time I was turning 16 and finally getting my permit. The only thing is that this story takes place when I was 15. I woke up to an empty house and felt free to do anything. Dad was at work, my brother was out and about, and my mom was at my sister's lacrosse tournament for the day. The thing I didn't realize was that my brother had not taken his car, but I discovered this tempting truth when I finally checked the garage. I felt more tempted than ever to take it out and cruise right on over to my friend's house. I had driven a car before several times, so it wasn't like it was first time out on the road. At breakfast, as I remember, I was a craving meal from Dunkin' Donuts, and I was extra careful on the road going to a public place. My heart was racing driving over there, and if I ever got pulled over for any reason, it would have been the death of me. I made it back safely and parked outside instead of in the ga

The Value of Internships

A person can gain a lot of benefits from participating in an internship. An internship allows you to acquire experience, build your resume, and to gain training in your field of choice. Acquiring experience allows you to be a step ahead of others competing for the job you want. Gaining experience in your field will give you a lot of different strengths as a potential job candidate. One of the major advantages it gives you is that you can be ahead of the other people competing for the job you want. Being in an internship puts you in that environment already and gives all sorts of experience that you can use to your advantage, and having an advantage to get a job in a economic crisis is a major benefit. A Summary of An Early Article on Drug Addiction

The article summarized in this paper entitled, "Drug Addictions, A Public Health Problem," was originally published in 1914, and it was chosen because it provides an interesting contrast to our modern perception of drug addiction. The article first discusses a bill passed to control the distribution of drugs in the author's city and later mentions some of the underlying causes of drug addiction as believed at the time. At the time of the article, drug addiction was increasingly becoming a problem in the United States. As such, the author petitioned for a law in 1912 that would regulate the sale and distribution of illegal substances, in an attempt to wipe the drugs off the street. The crucial part of the bill was that it allowed for certain substances to be prescribed to those with a medical necessity, so as to prevent the excuse that the medically dependent were purchasing the drugs illegally only because there was no legal channel by which to purchase them.

On Marginalization: An Analysis of Three Poems

This essay will analyze three poems and explain the power of the words and images to involve the reader in the poem. The three poems of interest are: THEME FOR ENGLISH B by Langston Hughes, WE WEAR THE MASK by Paul Laurence Dunbar, and WOMAN by Nikki Giovanni. All of these poems create a mini movie in your head. Their words paint pictures and leave your mind heavy with thoughts. Nikki Giovanni's poem WOMAN is about a woman who is trying to grow and develop as a woman and who has a man who is not supporting her. When she needs him to be there for her he does not want to. "But he stood straight/ declining to be her corner" (12-13). There are some men in the world who are intimidated by a strong woman especially a strong black woman. As a woman we can not let the lacking support of our spouse stop us from being the successful woman that we can be. Sometimes no matter how hard you love a man you ca

"Pride and Prejudice" and Early Nineteenth-Century Marriage and Courtship

Marriage and courtship customs and ideas have changed throughout time. In the early nineteenth century, people got married at a younger age because it was consider proper. Now many people do not feel that they need to get married in order to live with the person with whom they are in a relationship. Even if they do get married, getting divorced after a while is easier in our current culture. Most things might have changed, but the main ideas behind marriage remain always the same. This is expressed in the novel,"Pride and Prejudice," by Jane Austen. Courtship or dating can have many definitions. It can mean different things to different people. Usually dating leads to marriage, but of course that's not always the case. In the old times, people usually met at balls, the church or recitals (Mooman 1). It was rare for a man and women from the same village to marry (Carlson 2). This was probably because they had seen each other grow up, and knew each other's defects. It was very crucial

Data From A Distillation Lab

Ethanol (L)-C2H6O Water (R)- H20 Figure 2. Molecular Structures Abstract The focus of the experiment conducted was to extract a component (ethanol) from a two part miscible solution (ethanol & water) with similar boiling points through a process called fractional distillation. Precise measurements were taken to assess the purity and percentage of the distillate collected. The process of fractional distillation extracted the ethanol through a series of cyclical evaporation and condensation processes and proved to be effective , yielding a ethanol distillate percentage of 90%. This index provided an analysis of the quality of separation achieved. Introduction Distillation is a process of refinement. A method in which a substance is extracted and purified from its solution. A Comparison of State & Nation Party Committee Websites

Political party affiliation is a quick way to find out the basic ideas and philosophy for each candidate, both Republicans and Democrats. Political affiliation can be used to understand the core beliefs of each candidate, and there are significant differences between them. A primary source for finding out about each party is to go to their individual websites. In this memo, I will explain how the Republican and Democratic National Committee websites compare to each other. The Republican National Committee (RNC) website starts off by showing the candidates Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan nominees for the 2012 election, labeling the candidates as America's Comeback Team. Immediately under the picture of the republican candidates is the opportunity to donate to the republican campaign. Current President Barack Obama is then portrayed below the donating link with the

Reflections on Preschool Child Observation Sessions

My observation of children took place at a preschool in Houston, Texas. There were about fourteen children in the area where I was observing; half were boys and half girls. They were between the ages of two and five. The first time I observed was October 4, at 2:00 p.m. for two hours and the second date was October 5 at 2:00 p.m. for two hours. I was to pinpoint some of the development processes that stood out to me and that I was able to relate to my current studies in Counseling. Early on in my observation, I did not see any children misbehaving, therefore I didn't see how they are disciplined. I did ask one of the students about their discipline police, and she said that they use time-outs and explain to the children why they are being put on a time-out. While I was there, a two and a half year-old girl began acting up by taking the toys from other children;she was doing this in a very forceful way, so the caregiver told her she was on a time-out. The little girl had to sit by h

Incorporating "Play" into the Workplace

Envision the workplace: an environment with no interaction or concern between the employees, no laughter, no jokes, only dull, hectic work. Wouldn't you rather be a part of an office with a friendly environment, where people can have some fun and enjoy their time there? Although 'work' and 'play' are generally thought of as complete opposites, that does not mean they can't go hand in hand. When combined, play in the work place can be of crucial importance to the success of the organization; the results of various studies conducted throughout the world have proved the fact that, "Happy workers are productive workers." As it turns out, play in the workplace is pretty common. Play opens up new levels of creativity and increases the fulfillment we experience at work. How employees feel about their company is directly related to their level of productivity and creativity. Research shows, "Highly motivated employees are up to 127% more productive than averagely motivated

A Tour of the Mahoning County Jail

On Friday September 7, 2012, my teacher, my fellow classmates and I enjoyed a very intriguing tour of the Mahoning County Jail. This tour consisted of a lengthy walk-through that took us through the inmates' living quarters (male and female),the dining hall, recreational area, the hole, and many other areas of the jail. Within this paper, I will give details on what I saw and my personal feelings about how the jail is operated, along with my thoughts about how the inmates carry themselves, from those who committed minor misdemeanors to the hardened felons. To begin with, I should note that I missed class last Wednesday, so I was unaware of the dress code that visitors to the jail are required to abide by. As I found out, their dress policy states that you cannot wear cut off shirts or shorts, and I am not certain, but I think, at the very least, bright colors are frowned upon. As I stated earlier I missed class, so as I arrived at our meeting spot I noticed that I was extremely un

Beauty and Truth: Emily Dickinson's "I died for Beauty - but was scarce"

The mysterious, and often ambiguous, nature of both beauty and truth long has puzzled those enticed by beauty's allure and by truth's intrigue. American poet, Emily Dickinson, strikingly approaches beauty and truth in her 1862 poem, "I died for Beauty – but was scarce" (449). Dickinson equates beauty with truth, ultimately suggesting that during one's mortal lifetime, the perfection offered by beauty and truth is impossible to obtain or even understand and that human connection, not attaining perfection, will bring solace and comfort to one's soul. Dickinson rather blatantly identifies beauty and truth as similar concepts through the poem's two speaking characters. The poem's narrating character claims to have died for beauty, while the character speaking with the narrator proclaims to have died for truth: I died for Beauty – but was scarce Adjusted in the Tomb When One who died for Truth, was lain

The Lady of Shalott: A Commentary

Romanticism was the prevailing mode of literary expression at the end of the eighteenth century and well into the 19th. In 1832, Alfred Lord Tennyson published the first edition of a ballad that would become a hallmark of Victorian romantic poetry, entitled, The Lady of Shalott. Romanticism as a movement is thought to be a reaction to the age of enlightenment, which was fixated principally on rationality and realism as opposed to introspective reflection. The enlightenment was a precurser to the industrial revolution, inspiring a focus on understanding the components of the physical world. The knowledge attained as a consequence enabled advancement of technologies that changed the world irrevocably. Conversley, romanticism is defined by imaginative embellishments and idealism, using larger than life concepts to convey colorful and emotive insights into the human condition whilst preserving the beauty of myth an

A Brutal Lottery: Reflections On Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery"

In the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, the lottery is a ceremony practiced by the people of the village. This is a yearly drawing held in which a member of the village gets stoned to death, so that the town will have a plentiful year for growing crops. Jackson conveys several messages about human nature in her short story. The most meaningful message she sends is how brutal and violent people can be to one another. Another significant message she sends is how tradition and custom can hold domination over people. Jackson also sends the message of how men treat women as objects. The main message that Jackson conveys in "The Lottery" is that people can be a part of such cruel activity and not think anything of it. The children went about the day as if this was normal, "School was recently over for the summer, and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them; they tended to gather together quietly for a while before they broke into boisterous play, and their talk was still of the classro

A Summary of "The Cherokee Nation and the Trail of Tears"

Like most Indian Nations, the Cherokee were systematically subjugated, robbed, dispossessed and finally forced out of their ancestral homelands. The only difference between the Cherokee Nation and other Nations is that they were more assimilated to the dominant white culture and thus left behind a large body of written records, from newspaper publications to court documents. As the Cherokee did seem to assimilate and played by the fickle rules set down by white Americans, their treatment, broken promises and ultimate expulsion from the east by the government was a deeper betrayal than that experienced by other Nations. Many Cherokees were educated, owned businesses and plantations, operated a newspaper, had a formal government and participated vigorously in the American legal system all the while were promised protection from intrusions and acknowledged tribal rights. The case of the Cherokee Nation proves that the American government of the nineteenth century would not be content with

The Problem of Aggression And How Best To Treat It

By studying and learning about aggression, it can be understood that children and even adults will show aggression when they feel threatened. Children from divorced homes have issues with low self-esteem and social competence because they are left out from one or both parents due to the fact that they are usually self-absorbed from their own emotional pain. It is clear that children and adults become very withdrawn, while they do attempt express their emotional pain to others. It is apparent that when children and adults do not have the attention that they need at home, they show aggression in a negative way. Fromm has argued that we must distinguish in man two entirely different kinds of aggression. The first kind, which he shares with all animals, is a phylo-genetically programmed impulse to attack (or to flee) when vital interests are threatened. This 'defensive' or 'benign' aggression is in the service of the survival of the individual and the species, is biologically adapti
