Lord of the Flies - A Brief Overview

In the novel, Lord of the Flies, a group of British boys are left on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere. When the boys first arrived, the island was such a beautiful place to be; a place of peace. Jack thinks he is the leader because he is the oldest and can do things the other kids cannot. Ralph is somewhat mature, but is still childish in the beginning of the novel. Throughout chapters one through three of the novel, there are conflicts between the island, Jack's society level, and Ralph becoming more mature. In chapter one of this novel, the island seems to be so beautiful with its natural beauty, but that quickly begins to change when the boys arrive and turns into a place of destruction. For example, Chpt. 1 Pg. 9 states, "The shore was fledged with palm trees. These stood or leaned or reclined against the light and their green feathers were a hundred feet up in the air." This description of the island gives you an idea of how peaceful and gorgeous this non-existing pla

A Quest for Identity - Of Mice and Men

In both John Steinbeck's novel and the Gary Sinise film, Of Mice and Men, the theme of a person's quest for identification is present. The two main characters build a strong friendship in search of work so they may purchase some land of their own. There are many symbols in the story that the characters attach themselves to, inexplicably, that serve as a talisman to satisfy the needs of fulfillment and help define their sense of possession or identification. In an article written by Todd M. Lieber entitled, "Talismanic Patterns in the Novels of John Steinbeck", Lieber explains "this idea exists as a recurrent structural pattern in almost all of Steinbeck's novels, and it contributes significantly to the central themes of his work, helping to convey much that is "inexplicable" in his vision of man" (262). Leiber goes on and writes "Talismanic symbols take many and various forms in Steinbeck's novels" (263). Land is one of the many t

Transformation and Reversal in The Taming of the Shrew

Shakespeare shows evolution and audience recognition between the two plots of the sisters and their suitors in The Taming of the Shrew. Katherine evolves from a shrew to the ideal woman and wife and attains true love and happiness, while Bianca becomes harder to tame and less of what society and her husband expects her to be. The reversal of personalities and ironic twist of love in the sisterly plots requires the audience to have a more complex recognition that people should not be categorized and can be more than what they seem. The audience must look at the dynamics of the two sisters and their personalities in the beginning of the play, and acknowledge the evolution and transformation at the end to have a more in-depth appreciation for the reversal. At the beginning of The Taming of the Shrew, Kate is viewed as harsh, cruel and frightening to the men around her. When Baptista says that Kate is to be courted before Bianca, Gremio makes a joke that she should rather be carted

Dubstep and Classical Music

Music is an ever changing and evolving source that will never cease to exist. Today I want to compare two music groups that are similar in many ways that people don't see. Dubstep and classical music are completely different in their own ways that we hear. If you listen closely to the two though, you can hear many similarities in the music without knowing it. When many people hear dubstep they say they hear a random assortments that include lots of bass added random into the electronic beats in the sound of the music. When people listen to classical music they say they hear the sympathy of the whole band within the piece of art. You can listen to them both closely though and can hear the similarities. A famous composer of the electronic based sound of dubstep is named "Skrillex", and let's compares him with the famous composer "Beethoven". I chose to relate these two because of

The Ongoing Problem of Underage Drinking

Underage drinking is a problem that has been taking place in the US for a long time. When the legal drinking age was at 18, younger kids were drinking and were starting earlier then they do today. Now that the drinking age is 21, the underage drinking isn't starting as young but is still happening. Parents let their children drink when they are around them. High school students today go to parties and drink with their friends. The problem with this is kids start driving in high school and when they are drinking they are drinking and driving. The original reason for raising the drinking age was to cut back the drinking and driving problems and yet, it seems to not have changed. II. Statement of Problem A serious epidemic is overtaking this country. Underage drinking is spreading like a virus. Teenagers are drinking everywhere you look. It is not just teenagers in college that are drinking; there are numerous teenagers in high school, middle school, and even elementary school! How have

Think Before You Act - Don't Drink and Drive

Everyday someone loses a person dear to them. You never know if it will be your last day here in this world. We all just live day to day and don't realize tomorrow could be our last. It's even worse when it could have been prevented. Choices we make can impact our lives and individuals around us. People say things happen for a reason, and that God has a plan for all of us. We won't know the truth until something tragic happens each of us. June 24, 2011 was the day that I lost a close friend forever. I remember that day like it happened yesterday. You don't forget days like that when your life changes forever. The night of the accident, a young man decided to leave a bar and drive with his blood alcohol content over three times the legal limit. He ended up driving the wrong way on the highway and collided head-on with another vehicle. Both drivers were pronounced dead on the scene. My friend was a victim of a drunk driver. He graduated from high school two weeks before his death. Not even eighteen years old and still had a life to live. My friend Bryant was an individual who left a mark on everyone he came in conta

Accounting Processes and Reports

Information management use can be found from a variety of sources in many different forms. The information required will depend on the task that it is being used for. Different sources of information will be suitable for different situations and information will need to be presented in a format which will maximize the benefit that can be extracted from it. Accounting information is just one of many types of information that management will use to help with their decision making process. In this essay I will discuss the usefulness of accounting information and also the other types of information management may use instead or alongside the accounting information. I will conclude that accounting information is of value to management as it helps give a vital element to their decision making but it should not be used in isolation. Instead management should use information from a variety of sources in order to make the most informed choices possible. McKinnon and Bruns (1992) discuss how

Henrietta Lacks and the HeLa Cells

When most people think of ethics, they most likely think of rules for determining what is right and wrong. Ethics provides guidelines for responsible conduct, conduct that identifies between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Ethics change as our values as a society change. What might be considered ethical can be a matter of a person's perspective; with money and privilege sometimes allowing for exceptions. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, about an African-American woman from Virginia whose cancer cells, collected for research as she was being treated for the cervical cancer that took her life, raises many ethical questions and issues surrounding her cells, known as HeLa cells, and other human cells? It raises the critical issues concerning the rights of patients who have had tissue removed and used for discovery of new treatments and drugs. The ethical and moral issues surrounding the HeLa cells are complicated, because the cells have been used to develop the first poli

Contstraints on Sports Participation

Sports participation constraints centers around extrinsic and intrinsic factors that inhibit or motivate an individual's participation in sports related activities. The focus is to investigate sports participation constraints and to explore the effects on the constraints experienced. It was found frequently that people perceived their sports and leisure activities to be limited primarily by the facilities and accessibility to the sports programs. Often, the lack of time and monetary constraints on adults is what was responsible for those perceptions, however, that participation variable is less pertinent to the younger population. Gaining a thorough understanding of what exactly keeps people away from such physical activities is critical in identifying the appropriate points of intervention to promote healthier, active lifestyles through involvement in sports programs. It is no secret that sports participation provides crucial developmental contexts for young people (Jackson, 2000

Women's Rights - In American and Saudi Arabian

Women's rights have come a long way in America, but in Saudi Arabia women's rights are still being overlooked. Saudi Arabian women still face the challenges of having equal rights when it comes to politics, jobs, marriage and family, and even their clothing. Saudi Arabian women have a long way to go before they even come close to having the rights American women have. American women complain about not making as much as men in some professions, but yet only five to fifteen percent of Arabian women have jobs. Arabian women mainly work in professions where they serve other women. Such as teaching, nursing, or staffing women's banks or stores. With the economy today it is almost essential for women in the U.S. to work and help support their families. Arabian women are not even allowed to work if it interferes with their household duties. Separating males and females in the work place is encouraged, but not required. We American women have the right to date a guy; to fall in love. We have the

Michelle Obama Takes on Childhood Obesity

First Lady, Michelle Obama launched a campaign concerning childhood obesity and getting kids to eat healthier. She says her goal is to put America on track to solve the childhood obesity problem in a generation, but blames busy lazy parents, cafeteria foods competing against vending machines at schools, food companies that promote fatty sacks, poor neighborhoods, and the screens. In order for her to succeed, she believes she needs to gather cabinet members, mayors, schools, advertisements, entertainment figures, and business leaders to get the point across and have a successful campaign. I strongly disagree that this campaign will ever be successful. There are many reasons why her campaign hasn't been successful at all being a couple of years having launched a campaign that could have potential with the right lead in direction. Michelle Obama's campaign on childhood obesity has potential. It's something that could work if in the right hands, but why isn't it work

Fraudulent Practices in Voter-Based Elections

Elections are law-governed activities; these laws determine who can vote, when and where voting occurs and what outcome constitutes winning. These laws also determine which officials are to count the vote, certify the victor and validate the electoral procedures. (Developments in the Law, 1120) This process is not an easy task; most that choose to undertake it do so with an intensity of honesty and profound character. They have not only the interests of themselves and their fellow citizens but for the Nation as a whole. In such cases presented in Uncounted and through follow-up research, these characteristics come under severe scrutinization and profound disappointment in the unscrupulous people involved. The thoughts of a failed Democracy in which votes were skewed to a particular party have haunted voters and created distrust in the system. In his victory speech, President Elect George W. Bush stated, "We had a long night and a great night, voters turned out in record number

Society in Jubilee and Gone With The Wind

The book "Jubilee" by Margaret Walker, and the movie, "Gone with Wind", based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell, both take place during slavery, the Civil War, and reconstruction. The book and movie take place in the same time period, but show different views of those times. Four themes emerge in these two novels, the transformation of Southern society, the overcoming of adversity with willpower, the importance of land, and finally the intelligence and capabilities of woman. These four themes best describe the two novels. In the book, "Jubilee" the South's society changes dramatically. The South was a place where land was important and where crops prospered. There were beautiful fields to show how strong the country was. Southerners were more famous for how many slaves they owned, as it contained a slave owning states. This meant the plantation owners could own slaves like property. This all changed during and after the Civil War. Everything that was bea

Christian Culture in Beowulf: The Green Knight and Sir Gawain

The Middle Ages was a period of great growth. During this time, art blossomed, literature thrived and the "Christian World" was spreading throughout Europe. Christian beliefs and sentiments were expressed in the poetry of Medieval England. Beowulf emerged at the inception of Christianity in Anglo Saxon England and intertwined Christian and Pagan beliefs. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was written when the Catholic Church was well established and organized in England and piety was the main focus of the faithful. This essay will show that Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight each reflect the Christian culture in which they were written. The heroic poem, Beowulf, is a reflection of Anglo-Saxon ideals and concepts. War was a way of life and the warriors lived by the heroic code and were expected to be brave, courageous, and loyal. Their reputation for such qualities was very important. Beowulf was written after the Anglo-Saxons were already Christianized, yet the pagan traditions that had dominated their lives were still present in their mind. The Anglo-Saxon society was one of the love of war, sea

Wrestling - A Metaphor for Life

It was the moment my wrestling team and I had been waiting for: we had to defeat our rivals KMS. We were ready. All the practices, all the blood, all the sweat and tears were on the line for the trip to the state tournament. It was a no holds-barred battle, and we were determined to come out on top. As the dual progressed my team wrestled with purpose, passion and power. Finally, it was my turn to step out on that mat and put to work all my physical and mental preparation. The fans were roaring with excitement, the gym was full of supporters, my mind was racing and my heart was pounding. A moment of self-doubt overtook me: one mistake and all my dedication and drive would not pay off and I would let my team and school down. As the match began my mind was blank for the entirety of the first period and I relied on my body to do what it was trained to do. By the time the second period began I was collected and therefore,

King Hammurabi's Code of Law

King Hammurabi envisioned his code of laws to govern the people of Babylonia. Hammurabi's code is said to be a reflection of ancient society. He cared about making a name for himself; he wanted his laws to be carried down through generations and his reign to be talked about long after he was gone. Hammurabi started a civilization based on social structure and economics. In order to build a successful empire, he wanted to have a society that had structure and social order. He knew that he had to have a unified law that everyone could abide by and needed social structure so that he could create equality among the people. He wanted all of his citizens to live under the same set of laws so that they could work towards a common goal and have the same rights as one another. Hammurabi was the first to organize the world's first written set of laws that characterized political and military structures, social structure based on economic power, and social welfare. It was important to him to h

How Language Reflects It's Culture

Language can reveal more things than we might assume. Language is the tool with which living beings communicate with each other. It includes many aspects, grammar, characters, logic, special jargons and many more. Culture, in other words, is the customs, art, achievements, and values of a particular group of people, and cultural aspects usually, if not always, gets imbedded into the language of that culture. With the intertwined relationship between language and culture, we can often identify an individual's cultural backgrounds through to his or her language usage. In a way, language is shaped by the culture in which it took shape. Back in the 18th century(late Qing Dynasty), a type of language called nu-shu(meaning female's script, pronounced Nüshu) was popular among women in Southern China. Nüshu took the form of squiggly and twisted versions of ordinary chinese characters, and contains only around 700 or so characters. It is usually written on fans, and then

The Truth Behind Bottled Water

If an entrepreneur pitched the next big idea as bottled air, many individuals in today's society would likely laugh. This was likely the same response to the idea of mass-produced bottled water several decades ago and yet, this trend is taking the world by storm. Unfortunately, it is not only a trend increasing in popularity, but also a trend that contributes to the destruction of the environment. Taking a natural resource and packaging it for profit to sell in our increasingly consumer driven society extends beyond irony. Plastic water bottles are an increasing threat to the environment. By examining the increased consumption, limited recycling of such bottles, and production and transportation of bottled water, one can see the detrimental effects on the environment. Consumption of bottled water is increasing at astronomical rates. A review entitled, "The Myth and Reality of Bottled Water," by Peter Gleick in 2004 stated that consumption was increasing by ten percent every year worl

Pittsburgh – A Very Livable City!

Towns and cities have a long history. In the ancient world cities were developed in a number of regions and for a variety of reasons and motivation from religious to political views. The first true cities are sometimes considered to be large settlements where the inhabitants were no longer simply farmers of the surrounding area, but began to take on specialized occupations, and where trade, food storage and power was centralized (Gracias, par.1). An ancient Greek philosopher, Plato, has once said, "This City is what it is because our citizens are what they are". A city is a home for hundreds of people and is shaped by decisions, views and knowledge of those people. These days when we look up in the dictionary for the word city it is defined as a center of population, commerce, culture, and a town of significant size and importance. However, with each day cities worldwide grow, improve, and change simultaneously. Based on the technological globalization cities are moving toward becom

Power Struggles in Contemportary Literature

Contemporary novels bring a new point of view to the actions and the lives in which the struggle, consciously or unconsciously, to dominate, plays a crucial role. Because of the fact that life itself is a game of gaining power over another, these novels depict a deeper analysis of this game. Although the most striking are the ones that deal with equality of males and females, these power struggles occur not only between man and woman but also society and the individual, two close friends or any two people who are related to each other. This presentation of characters and their actions is not simply narrated; rather, the issues of who controls, how he/she controls, and the process of power struggles are explored. The audience generally is able to discern when a power struggle is taking place, because they can see characters unable to go beyond attempting to control, while the others cope with these attempts, like playing cat and mouse. Furthermore, these novels aim to represent the char

Jourdon Anderson and Lillian Smith - A Comparison

Jourdon Anderson and Lillian Smith both write with great intent and purpose. In both writings they use their experiences to speak. Their voices are heard. Anderson goes from a first hand experience; the instances referred to in the letter were things that actually happened. On the other hand, Smith writes in an "allegorical form" to get her point across (Gardner). In other words, her writing portrays an extended metaphor. In this case, her character references represent situations that would happen in reality. After reading Jourdan Anderson's letter, one can conclude that he was definitely voicing his opinion on how he was treated. In the letter to his former Master, Jourdan begins with sarcasm. In the first paragraph he says, "I thought the Yankees would have hung you long before this, for harboring Rebs they found at your house" (Anderson). This kind of information is one that should be kept a secret, but it seems that Jourdon doesn't care because at that point, he cannot be pu

Making Evaluations and Judgements

1. Primary Singular Evaluations We often come across the view that to judge a thing as good or beautiful is merely to give expression to one's own personal attitude towards things in general; or, in other words, that evaluations of moral and esthetic values are conditioned only subjectively, as opposed to perceptional judgments, in which the objective existence of things is conceived. Contrary to that view, it is possible to show a far-reaching analogy between perceptional judgments (Wahrnehmungsurteil), and axiological evaluations conceived as cognitive measures; and consequently between existence, which is affirmed in perceptional judgments , and goodness or beauty, which are affirmed in evaluations. This analogy gives foundation to a conclusion that the value of an object should, from an ontological point of view, be conceived in a way analogous to that of conceiving the object's existence. By a perceptional judgment we mean a judgment in which is affirmed the existence of an objec

Children's Television Programming - Now and Then

As I am sitting with my pre-teen watching The Disney Channel, I cannot help to stop and think on how drastically children programming has changed. When I was growing up things were so different. The children shows were more age appropriate, educational, and less violent. I remember some, (like He-Man) even ended with safety and educational tips before each show ended. There were so many great shows back then like Pin Wheel, Blossom, Saved by the Bell, and Full House. If these shows were to be brought back, children would probably not show interest in them. Children nowadays are used to watching shows that include sexual language, violence, and children acting twice their age. There are multiplying signs, indeed, that something has gone wrong with children programming in America. Are we ok with allowing our kids to watch violent or age inappropriate shows than an educational one? Shows that were aired years back, were very age-appropriate. They were basically about family values, dealing with problems with friends, and fun adventures. I recall how they were based common problems one would have with a friend, family member, or at school. They would show

The Affects of Stealing

Stealing is a crime. A crime that does not only effect you, but everyone around you deciding to obtain something, by way of the "5 finger discount" is a stupid decision know one should think twice about. Stealing goes against personal and religious beliefs. Stealing betrays trust. Stealing can play a factor in your death. Stealing can also escalate into bigger crimes. Every thief gets caught some day; it's a proven fact.   I never thought that I would ever come in contact with law enforcement, until this happrned. My case is a unique one, but not unheard of. Even though I was not the person that was stealing; however. I was with someone who did decide to steal. which made me an accomplice. This is a prime example of guilty by association; just because I was there with the person, I could still have been charged with the crime; which was a felony offense. When my friend decided to steal he did not take into account, that I also could be held responsible for his wrong doings. My
