Observation and Analysis of Children's Play: Gender Roles and Pirate's Play

Play is a key element to the social/physical growth and development in young children's lives. On October 13, 2011 I was given the opportunity to observe 3 children at play, and in my observations I noted several interesting trends, moments, and processes identified within common male/female gender ideologies and interactions. It is during play that children begin to understand, experiment with, and push the boundaries of their self-awareness as male or female. My nephew, 4-year old Benjamin, was scheduled for a play-date with his two friends: 6-year old Greg and his little sister, 4-year old Sara. It was about 1:30 in the afternoon, and Benjamin, with his neighborhood friends, was standing on the porch with their mothers. Very quickly, when the children began to play, Ben firmly established a male-female boundary. He picked up 2 large, brown and black, cowboy-esque toy guns and handed one to Greg. He grabbed a very small (in comparison to the boy's guns), light-blue, plast

Fashion: Extreme Identity in a Postmodern World

"Fashion provides one of the most ready means through which individuals can make expressive visual statements about their identities". (Bennett, 2005: 96). This statement will be discussed into more depth, as I research about extreme identities and how fashion can effect what is portrayed about oneself in a postmodern world. Identity is one of the most undeniable and controversial concepts in the humanities and social science. Fashion implicates that we are continuously constructing and reconstructing our identities, and in doing so, the clothes we wear play an important role (Kratz & Reimer 1998). Identity is a negotiable concept, with many traditional, modern and postmodern views. The ninetieth- century, traditional view on fashion identity was uncontroversial. Identities were fixed and stable, there was no 'identity crisis' you were all uniformed by class. By the twentieth- century modern views on fashion identity, had become more fluid, self- reflective, un

Progressivism and the Philosophy of Education

Every Teacher has their own philosophy of education. There is no right or wrong philosophy, but each one effects how the classroom is run. A teacher's philosophy defines the curriculum that is taught, the way the classroom is managed, the manner in which each subject is taught, and how the students are evaluated. Out of all the theories of education, the one I agree with most is progressivism. The curriculum for progressivism focuses on problem solving and learning through experience. It teaches the students to think for themselves and draw their own conclusions. Students would have the chance to do everything hands on rather than listening to a lecture. I think that's very important for young students, especially in early elementary school, because sitting still all day is so difficult for them. Giving students the opportunity to go to museums for art, or historical buildings for social studies, gets them interested in what they are learning and makes it feel more real t

Business Systems Development in Manufacturing

Riordan Manufacturing is an International plastics company with 3 locations in the United States and a joint venture in China. Over the years Riordan has acquired small specialized companies and as such the company needs to establish systems and procedures that can be used in all locations. The company will benefit in many ways by combining and creating business systems that are the same in all locations bringing cohesiveness, organization and improved efficiency that will be the foundation for the future growth of the company. The company requests the analysis of the Human Resource (HR) department systems to begin the process of updating the systems. Whenever there are plans to make changes to systems there are people that need to be included in the analysis and development of those changes and those people are the stakeholders. Riordan is starting with the Human Resource department for the initial upgrades to the system so the stakeholders will be the director of HR Yvonne McMi

The Golden Rule

Now more than ever, the "golden rule" is needed or should be used by people. If you are not familiar with the term, the "golden rule" simply means to treat people the way you would like to be treated. It may sound simple but it is not as easy as it seems. In Chinua Achebe's short story, "Dead Men's Path", he is trying to stress the importance of this life lesson, respect and communication between different groups; this is still as relevant today as it was when the story was written forty years ago. With the recent catastrophic weather on the East coast, it is easy to think back to Achebe's short story and the meaning behind it. People, strangers, are helping each other get through one of the worst things this area has ever been through. The acts of kindness and selflessness are remarkable. People who have lost everything are still helping others and finding the strength to move past the devastation. People like this are truly living their

Three Reasons to Develop Solar Energy

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association reports there was a 67% increase in the solar industry from 2009 to 2010 in the United States. In addition to 67% sales increase, the U.S. solar equipment was installed in 2010 a total capacity of 956 megawatts, and the same year, a total generating capacity of the global solar equipment 17GWp. These statistics show that many people consider solar electric power systems as the future of alternative electric production. Nowadays most people move away from depending on fossil fuel-based power generation to alternative energy sources like wind and solar. Hundreds of families have turned to residential solar power generation to control their future electric cost and supply. Nowadays, solar energy is used to provide electricity to homes, schools, businesses, universities and space vehicles used by NASA. Solar power is the energy of the future because it is environmentally safe, it is financially profitable, and it is energy independent.

The Cost of Education

Education is a human right. At the core of education is the development of societal and individual cultural identity. Education makes people neither tired nor rich and can make all people equal through social justice. Social justice is the precondition for sustainable human development and peaceful coexistence. Every child has the right to an education and every person has a right to satisfy their basic learning needs. However, in recent years, education is becoming more expensive. From the 2001-2002 academic year to the 2011-2012 year, tuition and fees at public four-year universities have increased by an average of 5.6% per year above inflation. Federal financial aid packages enable universities to substantially increase tuition without pricing out low-income (Roberts). College tuition hikes prove to be an even greater deturrant to higher education. Students suffer from the increase in prices and have to resort to extreme measures to attend school, such as taking out high interest l

Nike - Ethical and Social Standards

Nike has been dodging accusations of employing people in developing and under-developed countries, in poor work environments at minimal wages. Having tried course correction and public relations in attempt to salvage the horrific image generated by the sweatshops that Nike is said to be running, Nike has undertaken massive efforts in attempts to overcome these obstacles. This paper will focus on Nike's ethical beginnings, how Nike factories became a worldwide media topic and explore various problems, difficulties, and ethical decisions the corporation has encountered when conducting business on a global stage in search of production, cost effectiveness, and profitability. Nike is a company, which has experienced extreme success throughout its career. Both the name itself and the signature logo are synonymous with the sporting industry. The name Nike comes from the winged Greek goddess of victory, which is suiting, as the company is often associated with the success and victory o

Charles Dickens and His View on Lawyers

Throughout time there has always been a certain stigma associated with lawyers; cold hearted and power hungry. Dickens does not stray far from the mold with the character of Jaggers. In the novel's first encounter with the London lawyer, he tells Pip that he is paid for his services, otherwise he would not be there, meaning he is only there because of the money, only reenforcing the stereotype. Jaggers is used as a symbol of the legal system in that he is not concerned with moral values and is more concerned with status, power and money more than justice and what is right. After each case or meeting with a client, the stoic lawyer cleans his hands, and sometimes did as much as to wash his face and clean under his nails, as if he was cleansing himself of the people just dealt with, putting himself on a pedestal over the general population. For all the lawyers in today's legal system that represent Jaggers, there are also that many that represent Wemmick; a professional struggling to

The Social Learning Theory

Crime is something that seems never to go away. No matter how we treat it, there will always be some disorderly human behavior that leads to the commitment to crime. We try to figure out what makes people commit these acts. The Social Learning Theory is a theory that I believe produces structured reasoning behind why people do what they do. The idea says that human behavior is modeled through observation of human social interaction, either directly from observing those who are close or from intimate contact, or indirectly through the media. Interactions that are rewarded are copied, and those that are punished are avoided. (Seigel 667) To further analyze my theory of choice, I have selected two peer-reviewed articles to help me illustrate the meaning and the information behind this theory. The first article, "Social Learning Theory and Behavioral Therapy: Considering Human Behaviors within the Social and Cultural Context of Individuals and Families," examines theoretical thoughts of the social learning theory and behavioral therapy

Dubois and Washington in the Pre-Civil Rights Era

To clearly assess the view of Du Bois' essential points of disagreement with Washington, today's reader must consider Washington as one of the disenfranchised whom he spoke for. Du Bois declared that the appeal of Washington's program was aimed at enterprising national leaders who sympathized with the South's leaders "... pressure of the money- makers..."(Du Bois 45) Washington had not grown to leadership in such an atmosphere of African American intellectual progress and real social interaction of the races, as did Du Bois. He would have seen no hope for a more liberal social policy. Therefore, Washington's and Du Bois' programs were based on a difference in a view that equal civil rights for ex-slaves would be the fundamental "starting point" of the race's advancement. With the surrender of most southern leaders to Jim Crow, the southern government favored economic advancement of the ex-slave above universal manhood suffrage, hoping that the federal government would no longer support advancement of the freedmen. This was evidenced by the failure of the Freedmen's Burea

Snow White - Then and Now

No one knows if the story of Snow White is fact or fiction. What is certain is that it is based on folklore. Although there is no clear cut original Snow White story it was first written down in 1812 by the Brothers Grimm. Over the years as the roles of women have changed in our society this fairy tale has gone from the one dimensional story first introduced in the early 1800's into something more meaningful and deep such as the action packed 2012 Snow White and the Huntsman. Over the years some elements have stood the test of time such as the magic mirror, poisoned apple, glass coffin and seven dwarfs, and its message has remained the same: be careful who you trust. In the original version the focus of the story is Snow White and much importance is given to her appearance (dark hair, red lips, pale skin). It is indicated that she is not only beautiful but kind. She is portrayed as an innocent and passive young lady. In the 2012 version her character is not based on her ph

Messages in Letter from the Birmingham Jail

In this essay, I will discuss some examples of ethos, pathos and logos that were used in King's letter entitled "Letter from Birmingham Jail." "The Letter from Birmingham Jail," was in response to eight clergymen defending his actions. King's masterpiece "Letter from Birmingham Jail" is widely known for its eloquent and powerful use of the different literary techniques such as ethos, pathos and logos. He was well versed with the sermons and speeches from the Bible, and this seems to have helped King create highly emotional writings to appeal to different audiences. The very first line of King's letter was appealing and getting the attention of the audiences. King writes, "While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." (King, 1963) He draws the attention of the church leaders to the dungeons of the jail. One is forced to imagine the filthy crowded

Alice in Wonderland - Growing Up

Alice! A childish story take, And, with a gentle hand, Lay it where Childhood's dreams are twined In Memory's mystic band, Like pilgrim's wither'd wreath of flowers Pluck'd in a far-off land. Lewis Carroll's greatest fear is of all his "child-friends" growing into mature women. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a desperate attempt to create a world where his innocent pre-pubescent female friends mustn't grow up. From the outset Lewis Carroll focuses on pre-adolescence, on the innocent childhood of his child-friend Alice, on a time when gender differences, societal order, sexuality and conventions subsist as malleable conditions. By prefacing Alice's adventures with the above poem, we witness an effort to preserve time, prevent any change, or specifically maturation to take place. The ultimate endeavor is to preserve Alice's pre-pubescent state and prevent her from becoming one of "them." Ali

Factors Leading Up to the American Revolution

I think that there were many factors that led to the colonial break and eventual Revolutionary War with England. The Crown and Parliament in London didn't care about the Americans or if they were unhappy about how they were represented or not. The colonies seemingly were there just for the good of the motherland. Eventually, the colonists rebelled against Britain and declared themselves a free country. In my opinion, these were the three most important factors in that led to war with England. First, I think that the Boston Massacre played a major, if not the most important role, on the road to war with England. On March 5, 1770, a group of people outside the Boston customhouse were taunting the redcoat around the customhouse. He then called for help, and more British soldiers arrived. Somebody rang the town fire bell, which just caused, even more, people to show up to the already erupted scene. When one of the British soldiers was knocked over shots were fired into the colonist group. At the end of the day, five

Hearing Loss: Types and Treatments

Hearing is one of the traditional five senses, ability to observe sound by detecting vibrations through an organ such as the ear. The sense of hearing is very important because it has helped humans survive. We know what hearing is, but what is hearing loss? Hearing loss, happens when there is a problem with one or more parts of the ear or ears. People who has hearing loss might be able to hear some sounds hear and process sounds. The outer ear picks up sound waves and the waves transfer through the outer ear canal. When the sound waves hit the eardrum in the middle ear, the eardrum starts to vibrate. A hearing problem can develop later in life and connected with getting older which is a natural part of the ageing process. There are a few common hearing loss causes. The main ones include excessive noise, infections, genetics, birth defects, infections to the head or ear, aging, and reaction to drugs or cancer treatment. However, there are about 3 in 1,000 babies are born with hearing impairment, making

The Financial Bailout and CEO Bonuses

During the mist of a financial crisis in 2008, nine of the top US banks paid out over $32 billion in bonuses to its top executives. While this may seem like a common practice, those same financial institutions received over $175 billion in federal bailout assistance (1). While rewarding top executives is a common practice used to bring extremely talented individuals into the organization, is it right to use the tax payers' money? Before we discuss the ethical implications of CEO's lining their pockets with Federal money, let's back it up a bit. Was the 2008 bank bailout really necessary? The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 was enacted in order to counter the sub-prime mortgage crisis that almost led to the collapse of the US financial institution. The plan involved injecting $700 billion into US financial institutions (3). According to U.S. Treasury Secretary-designate Timothy Geithner, "I think if that had not been done at that time, I think

Defining Reality in Notes from Underground and The Cherry Orchard

To write about reality seems simple. All an author must do is portray day to day life in a work. This should not be so difficult, considering said author lives day to day life every day. However, one must assess the differences among each human's day to day lives before assuming to portray a conceivable "realist" work. By analyzing and contrasting Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground and Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard one can be convinced of the complexities of realist writing and the problems realist writing presents to the writer. Notes from Underground is written from the perspective of a man overcome with a desire to follow "isms". The Cherry Orchard depicts a family whose ways of thinking do not change throughout the entire play, but whose physical reality is changed by the effects of time. The similarity between these two works is that both contain characters created by an author. The characters portrayed are not actual people, and therefore do not contain the complexities of a true

Light and Dark in The Road by Cormac McCarthy

In the novel The Road, Cormac McCarthy uses many binaries. A binary opposition is a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning; one of which is Light versus Dark. The common idea of light versus dark is that light is always good and darkness is always evil. However this idea tends to be too much of a generalization. Not all of the people who follow "the light" are good and many good people do happen to follow the dark. Despite all of the issues with Light versus Dark it really is a simple thing. All it comes down to is ones personal point of view. Someone who looks upon the world as a bad place to live, who feels no hope that anything could get better, is someone who lives with a "dark" mind. People of this sort aren't necessarily FOLLOWERS of the dark but they ARE the basic orientation of darkness. On the other hand someone who always finds the positive things in life and finds the good in almost everything is someone whose basic orient

The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

In the Middle East, disputes over territory are commonplace. One such dispute, the Israeli Palestinian conflict, is very controversial. In the 19th century, Israelis and Palestinians were able to coexist peacefully. The area now known as Israel was predominantly Muslim, but there were a significant amount of Jewish people. In the late 1800's a group in Europe decided to colonize this land. Known as Zionists, they were a minority of the Jewish population whose goal was to create a Jewish native land. They considered many locations, including areas in Africa and the Americas, before choosing Palestine. As Zionists settled in Palestine, many who intended to take over the land for a Jewish state, the indigenous Palestinian population became increasingly worried. Eventually, fighting broke out, with escalating waves of violence. Hitler's asse

Nuclear Testing Areas and Cancer

American conservationist Terry Williams of Corona, California is a descendant from a Mormon clan and argues that the fallout of the nuclear testing in Nevada around the 1950's and 1960's was the cause for the growth in cancer in Utah. Breast cancer has taken the lives of many of her loved ones, one major person being her mother. Altogether seven died from cancer. Only two have survived all rounds of chemotherapy and she had problems with her biopsies, including having a small tumor in her. She had a borderline malignancy. Ms. Williams had to deal with their battles and all their shortcomings. Sadly for her, cancer was something she started getting used to being around every day. She describes some lawsuits that were filed against the United States regarding the potential cause of cancer because of these nuclear testing in Nevada. Ms. Williams tells the readers that the Mormons are taught to sit back and let the leaders do their job. She starts to feel that maybe she does not want to

Antigone: Creon, a Tragic Hero

Creon in Sophocles' play Antigone plays a major role as king of Thebes. Antigone also plays an important role, as her conflicting views with Creon led to utter disaster, highlighting Creon as the tragic figure. Within the play Creon attempted to establish decisions for the common good; however, his decisions resulted in tragedy. The tragic figure Creon, initially created decisions he thought were for the well-being of Thebes; however, Antigone, who rebelled against Creon's decisions, caused Creon's rage to cloud his rational way of thinking. When Creon made the just and fair decision to forbid the burial of Polynices, as he believed Polynices was a traitor to Thebes, Antigone was outraged. Creon was only doing what any good king would do. He had no choice but to punish Antigone for going against him. What kind of ruler would he be if he didn't? The outcome of the Creon's actions ended tragically, but it is the reason why he is the tragic hero in this play. Mo

Effect of Rapid Social Change on a Juvenile's Behavior

Klaus Boehnke and Dagmar Bergs-Winkle, the authors of this journal article, are attempting to show that when juveniles encounter conditions of rapid social change they will begin to display serious delinquent acts and possibly criminal intentions. They propose two succinct hypotheses. The first hypothesis is that rapid social change leads to feelings of injustice among youth which then turns into delinquency. The second hypothesis is that the stress of rapid social change brings about decreased parental control and the delinquency-reducing effects of parental control, thus leading to increased adolescent delinquency and maladjustment. Their second hypothesis has a profound connection to the "Family Stress Model" first introduced by Conger, Rueter & Conger, (2000). According to the "Family Stress Model" posited by Conger (2000), family contributes to emotional distress (e.g. depression) and family dysfunction. Family distress causes problems in the relations

Analysis of Kamakura and Asuka Period Sculpture

Japan has a very rich history of sculptureā€”from prehistory pottery to a focus of materiality in modern Japanese sculpture. It's history also very rich when it comes to dealing with the figure. The Yumedono Kannon of Horyu-ji is a fantastic glimpse into the past and the idealization of form. It's considered a national treasure, and is only viewable by the public twice a year. The Yumedono Kannon serves as a prime example of Asuka period sculpture. Kosho's statue of the monk Kuya was created roughly 600 years later than the Yumedono Kannon. It's a beautiful example of displaying a strikingly real form with attention to detail found throughout the piece. This attention and realistic approach has become characteristic of early Kamakura sculpture and is defined throughout the rest of era. The similarities between these pieces stretch far beyond the idea that it's a figurative sculpture, while the differences are the key indicators of the growth the artistic mindset and the approaches ta

Symbols in Dante's Inferno

In The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio, human laws can be defined as the laws that are created and institutionalized by people with power such as the rulers of the church and state. Natural law contrasts from human law in that it is tied to our conscience. The right or wrong decision we make can vary among similar situations that we are in and the choices that we make are governed by what we ourselves believe is right or wrong do to our conscience. In that sense, there is no wrong or right choice in natural law because society perspective plays no role. Throughout the Decameron, we find that Boccaccio expresses his belief that natural laws were superior to the human laws at that time through the stories that are shared mostly by making a fool out of church members. These expressions show that the church was losing its power over Europe and that the human laws that existed were weak. This concept that na
