The Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

While attempting to uncover an effective manner for students with disabilities to be included among general education students I came across quite a bit of controversy. How can students who obtain a disability learn alongside the general public without causing distractions and damaging learning? One party in strong favor of combining the two groups were deemed "inclusionists", in Elizabeth Palley's article Challenges of Rights Based Law she explains that being included among the general education is a disabled child's "civil right". Thinking back to my own public educational career I remember children with special needs always being taught separately from the general classroom, which made me start to wonder. Palley then goes on to suggest the Social Relations Theory, which states that the civil rights based law limits not only the general education students but hose with disabilities as well. I disagreed with this, I do not think that combining the two groups is lim

Building Relations - The United States and Japan

The relationship between Japan and United States is much likely complex and multifaceted. The relationship began in the mid-nineteenth century when Japan opened its country on July 2nd, 1853, followed by Matthew C. Perry. Both countries got to benefit from this relationship; Japan received natural resources from the United States, and the United States were able to access other Asian areas through Japan. However, the Great Depression in 1929 annihilated the Treaties and led the Japanese expansion. Even though Secretary of the State, Henry L Stimson sent a letter to Japan on January 7th, 1932, to warn farther expansion of Japan known as the Stimson Doctrine, it did nothing to halt Japanese expansion. As the evidence of Yosuke Matsuoka, a Japanese diplomat's announcement on February 1933, Japanese withdrew from the League of Nations stunning the World: known as the beginning of the strained relationship between Japan and the United States. This tension deteriorated throughout the 1930's

Culture and School Reform

The pressure for school reform is ever increasing. Districts are continually being pressured to develop schools that have students achieving high standards on state assessments. Policy changes alone cannot bring the changes necessary to accomplish these goals. If school reform is to take place and real change to occur, it must focus not only on policy change, but also on cultural change as well (Gorton, School Leadership and Administration, 2009). Leaders need to realize that every school has a developed culture consisting of traditions, beliefs and habits which are built in patterns of behavior that have built up over time (Shaping school culture: The heart of leadership, 1998). These behaviors affect every part of the school from what the faculty talks about in the lunch room to the style of instruction in the classroom, kind of professional development, and how students view the importance of learning (Peterson T. E., 1998). Numerous studies have also recognized that organizational culture is vital to the s

Of Mice and Men: The Development of Curley's Wife

Steinbeck depicts Curley's wife not as a villain, but rather as a victim. Like the ranch-hands, she is desperately lonely and has broken dreams of a better life. In the 1930's when this novella is set, American domestic life was still revolved around the servitude of the housewife. Women were there to be enjoyed by men, to keep the house clean, to feed their families and to look after the children. It was very rare to see a woman get a 'real' job – and if they did, it was liable that the pay would be less than is a man was doing the task because women were seen to be less efficient. Curley's Wife, in John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men, is an example of how the reader's perception of a character can change without the character actually changing. She could be symbolic of women everywhere who are repressed by male-centered societies. We first hear about Curley's Wife when Candy describes her to George. Candy uses expressions such as "she got the eye" a

An Overview on Physics

Physics; it is the branch of science concerned with the properties of matter and energy and the relationships between them. Many people think that physics is just another boring school subject, but in my eyes it is the most fascinating of all scientific fields. It explains why things happen the way that they do. Physics explains why when you drop and apple why it falls to the ground instead of just floating there and it even explains how life is possible! Every day we encounter physics in the world around us. Simple physics ideas such as gravity, magnetic fields and friction have always been around, but we haven't always known about them. I would like to showcase a few of the brilliant people throughout our history who discovered and created the science of physics. It is difficult to find exactly who began using numbers, mathematics and science first but an early use of numbers was by the Babylonia, located in modern day Iraq. In about 2500 B.C Royal Edict created the fir

Puritanism as Depicted in Young Goodman Brown.

To begin with it must be said what Puritanism was. It was a movement within a Church of England in the second half of the 16th Century which attempted to carry the reformation of the Church more radically than the Church of England did. Puritan theology was derived from Calvinism. It asserted the innate sinfulness of all men due to the fall of Adam and the inability of man to work out his personal salvation. God is all-powerful and his true nature is incomprehensible to man. The Universe is God-centred and man is the source of all evil. His sinful nature deserves no pity. He may be rescued from damnation only by arbitrary divine grace. Christ did not die for all mankind but only for those who will be saved. God has left many clues of his holy work, one of them is the Bible - the perfect word of God - which must be read carefully in order to know God's will. In daily routines man must strictly obey the rules and regulations of the Bible. Puritans left no room for many forms of popular a

The Bullying Epidemic

Is bullying morally wrong? Children need to be informed about the impact it can have on the lives of everyone involved. Some parents have lost their children to suicide due to "bullying" or "Cyber Bullying", while siblings suffer the loss of losing a brother or sister. The psychological and emotional damage caused by such an action can be very detrimental. I chose this topic base on my concerns of having a 12 year old son in middle school. From my own observation I have witnessed children harassing other children. I spoke to my son about these issues, my concerns of kids bullying other kids and the effect it has on the child being bullied. I asked him 2 questions "Have you ever felt threatened? Have you ever been bullied"? He responded "Kids in my school get bullied everyday". It is a normal thing to us". Immediately I went to the internet and pulled up the STOP BULLYING website to show my son the effect bullying has on some children. His

Father Figures of Huckleberry Finn

In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, a white boy named Huckleberry Finn (Huck) helps a runaway slave named Jim become free. Huck's father which he calls Pap is an abusive and drunk man that treats his son horribly. The story takes place in the Mississippi River, the town of St. Petersburg, Missouri and various locations along the river through Arkansas. Also, it takes place before the Civil War so roughly 1835–1845. Jim and Pap are both different father figures towards Huck. Jim is a better father figure because he respects him, he explains how he fells and influences him to do the right thing. Pap isn't a good father figure because he is always drunk, looks for money and locks his kid in a house and chases him around. On page 21, Huck describes what his father did by saying, "Next day he was drunk, and he went to Judge Thatcher's and bullyragged him, and tried to make him give up the money; but he couldn't, and then he swore he'd make the law force him." Pap is a bad father figure because he was drunk and wanted to have his son's money. Also, it

Things Fall Apart and Heart of Darkness - Stereotypes

"Dumb blondes", "Smart Asians", "Loud-mouthed Italians", all stereotypes that exist in today's society. Stereotypes are exaggerated, over-simplified generalizations that are often times hurtful. They are also very hard to overcome especially since they are drilled into the minds of our youth. Both Achebe's and Conrad's novels are seen as great respected world literature works; however, they come from two completely different sides of the spectrum. Conrad's Heart of Darkness depicts Africans in a highly stereotypical manner. Africans are described as being savages. While on the other hand, Achebe's Things Fall Apart does the complete opposite. He attempts to shine a light on the ways of his people; he shows that native Africans are just like everybody else. Conrad uses stereotypes to portray Africans as barbarians who are hardly human, while Achebe works to refute these stereotypes by delving into African culture and roots to show h

A Psychoanalysis of Bill Gates

Introduction The success of an entrepreneur was not a coincidence. The effects of environment, personality, resources, opportunity plays as key factor on the success. Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955, and grew up with his two sister in Seattle. Their father, William H. Gates is a Seattle attorney. Their late mother, Mary Maxwell Gates, was a schoolteacher, University of Washington regent, and chairwoman of United Way Internation (Microsoft News Center, 2011). The Truth About Failure and Success

"Success is when preparation meets opportunity." These profound words arose from one outstanding motivational speaker Hilary Ziglar, also known as "Zig" Ziglar, who endured the painful loss of his beloved father and younger sister at the age of six. Aside from all his early childhood difficulties, Ziglar never gave up and ended up rising to success. It is only human for mankind to hope for noble triumph more willingly than wretched failure. Although, the unbelievable sensation of sweet victory is what we long for, maybe losing is the secret ingredient in success. It forces us to strive harder for ultimate goals, lets us discover different sides of the situation, and teaches us lessons that winning under no circumstances will. There are no negative effects of losing unless you give up after you tried. One prime example is President Abraham Lincol

The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" is a short story about a man who was wronged and decides to get revenge on the offending individual. Monstesor's narration inadvertently shows the audience what he went through as he let anger and bitterness rage within him because of his wounded pride. There is also a dramatic irony in that Montresor shows concern for Fortunato at the same time he intends to kill him as they descend to the depths of the catacombs. A popular phrase says; "pride comes before the fall". In "The Cask of Amontillado", we see that both in Montresor as well as Fortunato. Montesor starts out mentioning his hurt pride: "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge." Th

The Impact of Legislation on Service Users with Disabilities

In this piece of coursework I will be writing about the Disability Discrimination Act and the NHS care and Community Act. I will also be explaining how the Disability Discrimination Act and the NHS Care and Community Act could benefit two service users. In this section I will be looking at two legislations, the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and The NHS and Community Act 1990. I will be referring it back to case studies to show the different ways the legislation helps the service users. The First Act I will be explaining is The Disability Discrimination Act 1995. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) main aim is to reduce discrimination against those with disabilities; in particular those individuals who are in employment, in access to facilities, goods and services. The DDA covers a range of people who have sensory, mental or physical disabilities. The act also covers people with severe disfigurements. The act is there that everyone who has a disability should have the sa

Color Symbolism in The Great Gatsby

Authors often use color symbolism in their writing to show a deeper meaning. Often, these colors associated with a particular feeling of an object. Fitzgerald is no different in his work, The Great Gatsby. It is discernible that Fitzgerald uses a multitude of color references in his writing. The ones most easily recognizable are the use of yellow, white and green. There are, however, such colors as silver, blue and red that lack obvious recognition due to their vagueness in the text. Yellow is identifiable as money and white as purity, however, the full aspect of the meaning is lost. White is the first color the Fitzgerald symbolizes through his writing. A strong contrast between light and dark shows whites in accordance with other colors (Schneider 1). The white represents the purity of Gatsby's dream that mingles with darkness in the form of such people as Tom and Daisy. The Valley of the Ashes shows this contrast. In a world that is so grand, the American Dream is left to wallow in

Perfect vs. Monopolistic Competition

Perfect and monopolistic competition have certain similarities. Both involve large numbers of sellers and buyers. As each buyer has little influence on the market price, buyers are said to be price takers. In the long-run zero economic profit will be made in both types of market due to the flexibility of entry and exit of firms to the industry. Finally, neither form of competition chooses to behave strategically as it believes any independent decisions to alter output or price will not have an effect on it's rival's actions. Fundamental differences are that monopolistic firms sell differentiated products to compete with rival firms whilst in a perfectly competitive market the combination of homogenous goods and symmetric information means each firm charges the going market price i.e. firms are price takers. Due to the large number of firms in both industries, each firm's choice to change output will have only a marginal change in the total industry's output. Thu

The American Colonies and the Fight for Freedom

The American Revolution was a fight between the American colonies and the British Empire that had been brewing for years. Before I begin to discuss certain key elements that jump-started this war, I must discuss what took place beforehand in the New World that set the stage for the Revolution. A war had already been fault on the North American Continent, in which British blood was already spilled. The French and Indian War, which lasted from 1650 to 1763. During this time the British crown was occupied to say the least and the newly formed colonies were neglected and free to rule over themselves, relatively speaking. The colonies began to practice their own forms of law, and government for that matter, in which gave them their own unique sense of identity. The early Americans established representative legislatures and democratic town hall meetings. They also utilized local judiciaries and trials where defendants were presumed innocent until proven guilty. They began independently shi

Canterbury Tales - Code of Chivalry

In The Canterbury Tales, the Knight is a representative of those who belong to the very high social class of the nobility. A knight is a mounted man-at-arms serving a feudal superior; especially: a man trained into special military rank usually after completing service as a squire. Knight is taught how to fight and so serve their Lord according to the Code of Chivalry. A Knight would be required to guard the castle and assist his lord in medieval warfare. The knight had great responsibilities to his lord, his people and God. Duty, honor, fidelity and devotion to shed blood and have their own shed filled the life of a medieval knight. Not only were they obliged to their lord from whom they held their title and estates, knights were also accountable for defending their own vassals. In times of tranquility, it was their duty to shield the commoners under their care from bandits, and sometimes from other knights. Peasants would swear fealty to the Knight and work his land. In exchange, the

Conscience v. Conscious: Evidence of Macbeth's Control of His Fate

To survive as a human, one must nourish the body with water and food; to survive as a person, however, is more complex of a system. Macbeth, of William Shakespeare's classic play Macbeth, shows what it is like to persevere throughout life as a person with too much control. A common argument on this character is whether the witches of his time had control of his conscious, and if they had taken away his conscience. Neither of these concepts is accurate however, as Macbeth frequently shows examples of private decisions that lead him on his path from loyal warrior to murderer. Macbeth is a fine example of a man being overly ambitious, to the point of his demise. Macbeth shows exemplary passion for his assigned task early in the play. Describing the fierce warrior, Captain states, "Like valor's minion, carved out his passage/Till he faced the slave;/Which ne'er shook, nor bade farewell to him,/Till he unseamed him from the nave to th' chops" (Shakespeare 1.2. 21-24). Most other combatants would not go to the extreme of carving a passageway through an opposing force, and be so willing to dispose of ano

Marketing Organization

Over the past five weeks, I have gained a lot of knowledge on the common goals of marketing in today's economy. I have In this paper I will explain about how this class and the knowledge I have learned throughout the past five weeks to help me with my everyday life and on a professional level as well. Marketing is the function that links the consumer, customer, and public to the market through information used to identify and define marketing opportunities and problems; generate, refine, and evaluate marketing actions; monitor marketing performance and improve (American Marketing Association, 2012). Marketing is "telling and selling" meaning satisfying customer needs (Kotler & Armstrong, 2012). Marketing has much more to it than just brochures and websites, marketing help with generating revenue, and growth. For most organizations, being able to understand their customers is critical to their business and the success of their organization. By determining and

Driving While Using a Cell Phone

On estimate, each year there are about 1.6 million car accidents caused by cell phone use. Since 2009, the year they passed a law banning cell phone use while driving, that number has not gone down very much. That is proof that banning cell phone use while driving hasn't stopped many people from using their phones. Even though there are safe ways to make hands-free calls, drivers still aren't using the options available to them. Every day people are coming up with more and more ways to conceal the usage of their cell phones without getting caught and fined. There are also drivers who are finding different ways and different places to hide their phones so they can text while driving without getting caught. The last point is that it isn't necessarily the use of cell phones that are the cause of accidents but that any driver distraction causes the accidents. With that said, the roads didn't get much safer when they made the use of cell phones illegal. Firstly, there are so many things t

Pride and Prejudice and Good Reputations

For those living in the nineteenth century, the way they presented themselves to the world was of utmost importance. They were expected to portray themselves as delicate yet alluring. Those who chose to separate themselves from this social standard were sure to be scorned and criticized. A commendable reputation was a reflection of a person's upbringing and class. In Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, one's most prized possessions is a good reputation. The Bennet family consists of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their five daughters. This means that only a male relative can inherit the Bennet property when Mr. Bennet passes away. "Upper- and middle-class women's choices were limited to marriage and motherhood, or spinsterhood. Both choices resulted in domestic dependency" (Cruea). As stated by Catherine McDevitt, "In general, under the legal doctrine of covertures, free married women lacked the standing to write wills and undertake property or credit transacti

Alexander Hamilton: The Father of the U.S Coast Guard

America had won the Revolutionary War and although they had fought for their Independence, the battle to build a country was far from over. Constitutions were being drafted and turned down, laws were being passed and constantly changed. It was taking a while to get everyone on the same page. President George Washington appointed Alexander Hamilton as the first Secretary of Treasury. While also being one of the leading architects of the newly designed government Hamilton was also responsible for managing the national debt and the cost of running a government was on his shoulders. Among several things he enacted to gain revenue for the country was the creation of the Revenue-Marine or the U.S. Coast Guard, as it is known today. Although Alexander Hamilton wanted America to become self sufficient in the area of manufacturing, He did support high tariffs that would result in the exclusion of foreign products. Instead he imposed moderate tariffs that would gain revenue. (Henretta) With

Eminem - Music and Society

People are always looking for someone or something to blame when it comes to the corruption of society. That is just human nature though; we need a scapegoat to be at fault for problems the world is facing today in order to make us feel like it's not all our own doing. For decades now, there has been a group of individuals who are constantly being accused for negatively influencing society. These people are the musicians we grow up listening to on the radio and watching on TV admiring their impeccable talent and their over the top stage performances. However, with all the focus put on artists and the lyrics to their music, we forget to take a step back and look at why these musicians say the things they do. During interviews, when asked where one gets their inspiration for their lyrics, common answers are, "my life" or "from the world." So it seems that instead of pointing fingers at musicians for corrupting our obviously perfect society without them, we might

Gender Roles in Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin is the number one romantic novel in the history of books. In the book Pride and Prejudice, gender is a very noticeable issue for both ladies and men. For girls, they are required to marry at a very young age. The role of a man is to be very charming among the ladies and to be as they call it a very agreeable gentleman. As for the woman they are supposed to use the most proper manners possible. Interestingly, gender is a very distinguishable issue for the ladies and gentlemen in this novel. Girls were required to marry at a very young age, compared to nowadays. A woman that can sing, play instruments, sew, draw, and do other artistic activities while still being very modest and agreeable are the women that will be married first. The women hoped to find a rich husband that can care for them for the rest of their years an
