The Mystery of the Stellar Sea Lion
An entire species is dying off, and quickly for that matter. Since the 1960's, about 94 percent of all Steller sea lions have been killed off due to reasons "...including pollution, climatic changes, marine debris, and disease – so far to no avail." Vanishing from Alaskan waters, and biological detectives not having a reason as to why, David Holthouse tells the mystery just how it is, and just what we can do to help slow down the serial killings of a species that has no profound reason to die off quite yet. With very few of these specific sea lions left, an ecosystem is being damaged and in turn, is hurting innocent marine-mammals. Named after George Wilhelm Steller, the Steller Sea Lion was discovered way back in 1742 during his voyage around some harsh Alaskan waters. Historically, the range from the Gulf of Alaska to the Bering Sea and all around the Aleutian Islands has been the main home to the Steller Sea Lion for centuries. From 1960 to 1989 the populati |

Conflicting Emotions in Neil Simon's The Odd Couple
The mood and tone of The Odd Couple is very contrasting, to say the least. There is always conflicting emotions going on at once which help the work as whole. There are a handful of moods, each of which goes very deep into the movie's plot. Some of these scenes contain multiple moods, such a happy, sad, depressed, and humorous. The Odd Couple evokes many emotions from the viewer, and places significance on certain events to help the work as a whole. Starting with the beginning of the movie, the scene starts out dark and with a sad beat. It is set in downtown New York, at nighttime. Felix is a lone man, walking without a purpose; the camera is panned out to show dozens of couples around him, having fun. This part of the scene alone invokes a lot of emotion. The gloominess of the scene itself says a lot, as it gives the viewer a sad emotion from the start. Felix walking along the streets of New York alone also gives the viewer a feeling of depression, as they see Felix roam the streets |

Finding the Truth in the Impossible
From an early age, we have been taught that honesty is one of the most important things in our lives. "Tell the truth" is one of the phases we hear over and over again when we are little. But, is truth really so important? Is knowing the truth or telling the truth really one of the most important things in our world? Knowing the truth has always been a driving force in our lives. People have always asked for the truth. From the beginning of human history people have always asked question of truth. Questions like, How was the earth created?...is the world flat?...and is there an afterlife? Many different successful people and civilizations lived happily believing different truths to these questions and others. Clearly not all of these answers could possible be correct, but people were able to be successful and happy while constantly being fed false truths. So, my question is this, does the truth really matter, is knowing the truth really so important? I will examine different scenarios to try and determine an answer to this question. First, is an example that would affect a lot of people's l |

A Comparison of Langston and Angelou
The writing styles of Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes are very similar, evident in Angelou's poem, "Africa" and Hughes's poem, "Negro". Even from the titles, you can see that these poems will be about African Americans, unsurprising considering the authors. Both are activists of letting the world know of the abuse that African Americans have suffered. Many aspects of their works are very similar, including the repetition of words, stanzas, or phrases. They both speak out about slavery, they both use a broadened form of their topics and they both have interesting uses of the past and present tenses, making you relate to the poem on a very personal level, while at the same time, forcing you to see that there is a much greater thing happening right before your eyes. While containing less differences than similarities, it is very fun to notice that while Langston's poem is very self reflective and personal, Angelou's is grand; speaking outright o |

Changes in Education
As a student studying to be a teacher, I have found myself to be concerned and interested how children feel about education and coming to school. Being the oldest of four children I have been able to watch and see the differences that have been made in schools over the years. My concerns first began to surface when I would come home at the end of the day and ask my brothers how their day was at school. When asking them this question I would often get a short one word answer along the lines of just "good" or "fine". But that was not really the part that concerned me the most, following asking how their day went I would ask them what they did at school that day, and they would respond with "nothing". The first time I heard this I was shocked and did not know what to say in response. After the first time this happened I decided to continue asking questions. I followed with asking detailed questions to really make them think about what they did that day. What I started to assume was tha |

Evolution of Warfare - Ancient Greece, Romans and Chinese
Throughout the ages, weapons, armor, and even warfare have evolved in astonishing ways to suit society's needs. Many reasons exist for the changes in all these tools. Armor evolved through the need for one to protect him/her-self and weapons evolved alongside to break through this protection. Warfare evolved with society, just as society was evolving itself through time. No other societies better than Ancient Greece, Rome and China can show us how the Age of Armor began and evolved. These societies were the dawn of the great cultures of the world. Greece's epic poems "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" best describe the kind of warfare that was used in battle, along with the weaponry and armor of the time. Ancient texts and artifacts grant us access of how Greek warfare had changed and how some aspects of war remained the same, until the Roman times. The Romans improvised and improved a lot of the tactics that were used by the Greeks and along with new in |

Analysis of The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton
The House of Mirth, by Edith Wharton, tells the story of Lily Bart, a 29-year-old beauty living among New York's upper class. Lily's primary goal in life is to find a husband who can relieve the financial hardship she has endured since her childhood years as an orphan. Though unlike the women who surround her, Lily is unwilling to marry without both love and money. Being on the market for too long, Lily falls prey to gossip and slander and is pushed out of the community in which she has devoted her life to belonging. Wharton charts the course of Lily's life, providing, along the way, a wider picture of a society in transition, a rapidly changing New York where the old certainties of manners, morals, and family have disappeared and the individual has become an expendable commodity ("The House of Mirth," ReadPrint.) The House of Mirth is truly a great American classic because the insight into life that it provides through the characters, plot, and theme are just as effective to readers t |

An Overview of My Cousin Vinny
The movie, My Cousin Vinny, was a perfect mixture of court room drama with slap stick comedy. Though the elements of criminal justice and court room policies and procedures deviated somewhat from reality, the movie incited constructive debate for years to come. In the movie, Bill and Stan are pulled over and arrested. They had inadvertently taken a can of tuna without paying for it and they thought they were being arrested for shoplifting but little did they know, that was far from the case. The first thing that I noticed during the arrest is that the sheriff had his weapon pulled. The sheriff was arresting them because he thought they had committed a felony. He had every right to have his weapon drawn in this case. During the initial arrest Bill and Stan were not informed about what crime they had been arrested for, which they should have been. Once the young men were transported to the police station they were still not read their Miranda rights but they were asked if they knew thei |

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Our Privacy
In George Orwell's 1984, government controls an entire population by using rhetoric and language. Totalitarian societies in which people are controlled in every possible way; the thought of rebellion is always on their mind. Big Brother uses rhetoric and language to maintain his power and keep the masses controlled. Society must heed Orwell's warnings to protect their well-being. In Adam Liptak 's article, 'Justices Reject GPS Tracking In A Drug Case,' in claims police violated the constitution when placing a GPS tracking device on a suspect's vehicle. According to Mr. Dellinger "almost any use of GPS electronic surveillance of a citizens movement will be legally questionable unless a warrant in obtained in advance." Authorities cannot place a tracking device on any vehicle as previously mentioned, taking away part of our freedom. This disproves 1984 by George Orwell on the account of several reasons. The Party can do whatever they please to in Oceana. Orwell warns society and for somebo |

Growing Up In a Small Town
Growing up in a small town out in the country, an hour away from any city, riding my horse was what I did with my friends, or alone. I started riding horses when I was 7 years old, and my parents bought me my first horse when I was 11. From the ages of 7-27 years old, I owned and rode horses. I would ride in the woods, along the rivers and railroad tracks, through town, it didn't matter to me, I just went. My best friend and I would even tie our horses outside the town store on the bike rack and go inside, old school style. I did rides at birthday parties for little kids, I taught friends and family how to ride, I even got into 4H and did gaming for a while; I absolutely loved barrel racing, and I got pretty good too. To not have a horse now or to even be around them anymore is very hard, and I feel as if a part of me is missing, there's just a slight void there. I was 26, my husband and I had been married for 6.5 years and we finally had our first child that we&apo |

Tea: From Fields to Our Tables
Tea has been a popular drink throughout most of history, starting in China many centuries ago, and diffusing throughout the world as time has gone by. Lately, it has become standard for me to start my day with a cup of Twining's Breakfast Tea, so I decided to look further into the journey it takes to get to my kitchen table. Tea has been around so long that nobody is quite sure of it's exact date of origin, although, legend has it that the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung brewed the first pot of tea as far back as 2737 B.C. All tea comes from the same plant, the Camellia Sinensis, which was first cultivated for tea usage in China. Nowadays, China is the top producer of tea, but many other countries, like India, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Japan, and Argentina, rank close to china in terms of production. Kenya, which will be the country of focus, is most known for their excellent black tea. Kenya offers a very ideal climate for growing the Camellia Sinensis plant: tropical weather, almost no season |

Justifying the Death Penalty
The death penalty will always be a topic some people refuse to talk about. When in fact, it is a very serious topic and people should know how and why the death penalty is not justified. I believe the death penalty is not justified in the least bit because there are people sitting up in prison just living life because the state does not want to pay for an execution, or they find it to be morally corrupt. Personally if you committed a crime that resulted in someone dying then you deserves to die as well. The idea of killing another human does not sit well with people and that is mainly the reason why they are against the death penalty, when they should be for the death penalty because it will cost the state less and a person who took a life will no longer be walking the earth. The death penalty which was established in the nineteen hundreds was created to put people to death for the crime they have committed. My argument for this topic is I am for the death penalty in many different |

Was Jesus Forsaken by God?
I have wondered if Jesus was no more 'forsaken' than any of us have ever been before we come to salvation. Since we are born separated from God, we do not notice our condition until we know His acceptance. What Jesus was experiencing was the same separation from God into which we are born. The first Adam chose to sin. This brought about an immediate wall of separation between Adam, Eve, God, and all humanity. The Second Adam chose to BECOME sin in order to reconcile us back to God. He did not commit any sin, but He Became sin. In taking on the sin of the world, He felt the full brunt of what happened in the garden, and knew the darkness, the nakedness, the fear the first Adam (by his own choice) felt. Jesus then (by His own choice) became the Second Adam. At that moment, He became fully aware of His humanity. Since Jesus had always been One with the Father this sudden barrier in that unity was felt, and realized with such force that He could only express it by quoting Psalm 22. |

The Crimean War
The Crimean war was caused by numerous factors that eventually boiled over and spurred war. This time period was one based off of the balance of power and conservatism throughout Europe. The main conflict resulted from religious tensions throughout the Ottoman Empire, caused by Russia's threats and actions to control orthodox religions within the empire. This was cause for concern for many other countries and soon after other countries became involved and by the end of the war, the whole ideology of conservatism was undermined and in shambles. Russia's desire to hold control over orthodox religions was also balanced with a need to retain power over the Ottoman empire in general. Russia wanted complete control over these religions to impose their power in the Ottoman Empire. However Orthodox factions including Judaism, Christianity and Islam were all rooted in expelling the Russians from the Ottoman Empire. One particular concern they had was the protector-ship of the Holy places in Jerusalem. Also a cause of the Crimean war |

The Legalization of Marijuana
The U.S. and our economy are running out of ways to pull us out of the recession, and once again experience a period of economic growth. If marijuana was to be legalized with regulation, we would take the money out of the filthy hands of the "underground market" and produce a new circulation of profit in our economy today. There is an extremely large network of people selling and buying marijuana that will continue to market marijuana because there is a demand for it. This market will continue until marijuana is made legal. Yes, it will be a challenge, but the government will be able to take over the market and begin money flow from marijuana into our economy; no longer will profit from the sales of marijuana go to hands other than the government. The U.S. needs to step in and begin to make circulation of money flow within our economy, or else it is possible we will never be able to get out of our deficit which is currently 16,874,365,457,260 trillion dollars and growing by the minute |

Summary of the Movie Gladiator
The movie that I chose to do my movie critique on was Gladiator. It was an enjoyable movie to watch. The director Ridley Scott directs a film by David Franzoni, to depict exactly what it was to be a gladiator and the adventure that they went through. From the infamous fights that took place in the Roman Coluseum, to the dramatic feeling that overcame Maximus (Russell Crowe) as his family was killed through the treacherous actions of his rival Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). The movie Gladiator begins with the battle with Romanian Army under the leadership of Emperor Marcus Aurelius against the Barbarian Tribe of Germania. This scene showed many striking points. For instance take the scene and where it takes place. In many scenes of the movie the armies are dressed in traditional armor. The armor that they wore contained great detail. The roaring sounds from the crowd of soldiers being excited because they are so eager to go into battle to fight helps the viewer feel the excitement that i |

Al Capone
Al Capone, a.k.a. Scarface, was an infamous gangster from the 1920's to the early 30's. His criminal career began at an early age in New York where he was taken under the wing of another infamous gangster Johnny Torrio. (Bardsley) Torrio left Brooklyn for the windy city; it was then that Al Capone started to work for Frankie Yale a gangster known for his aggressive approach in the gangster life. (Bardsley) In 1921 Capone was called upon by Torrio and left for Chicago. Tensions Leading to the American Civil War
The Civil War turned the United States of America on its head forever as it was one of the deadliest and the most destructive of all America's wars. It has been defined, in the words of William H. Seward, as the 'irrepressible conflict.' The most significant question always arises - what caused the industrial North and the agricultural South to begin the four years bloodshed between the States on American soil? The people in America were divided since the formation of the country in 1776 to the year of 1860. The consequence of such division was connected with location and personal mindsets. Thus, the Civil War was inevitable as peace could not last in the country full of contentions that affected the common American. As a matter of fact, there had always been one prevalent misunderstanding that the Civil War in the United States of America started only due to the slavery, yet there were several other reasons that unleashed the war. The three fundamental reasons of the Civil War in Amer |

Becoming a Successful Student
Online learning has become a new way for students to get an education. Taking online courses has many benefits and people nowadays are realizing that an online class saves them time and money. However, online learning has its disadvantages as well, and it is crucial for a student to know what it takes to exceed in an online course. Coming out of high school, my parents had already addressed to me that I was going to take online classes because of financial issues. Having never taken an online class frightened me quite a bit but I knew I had the qualities to overcome this problem. Therefore, even though I had no experience with online learning, I came to know that with time management, organization, and motivation one can become a successful online student. In order to become a prosperous online student, one must have the ability to manage his or her time. Usually in college students have hectic lives bec |

Crime and Modern Technology
Technology offers the potential for friendship, unity, and a lasting support to law enforcement, but is this friendship truly compatible or has technology increased the need for new and tougher laws, with a revision to most of the old laws already on the books. Technology has taken an average man's job and turned into one with much needed education and even then the learning does not come fast enough for our ever changing world. This paper will examine new technologies in the help with fighting crime or in reality are the things that make our lives easier allow criminals easier access to our loved ones, the things we have worked for and even allow them to escape punishment. Crime has been around for as long as humans and will only become disappear when we are gone. Why, because crime is defined as offending and violating laws, and laws were created by man and if we are not here than they would not be needed. I don't believe anyone would deny that technology has lifted crim |

Is It Just Luck?
Have you ever experienced unexplained good fortune? Like deciding to keep that penny you found on the street and had good things come your way the entire day, or maybe scoring 100% on that Biology test that you never even bothered to study for? Some may say this has to do with superstition or even good karma, but it is in fact luck; "success or failure apparently brought about by chance rather than through one's own actions." Many people believe luck is just the line where hard work and opportunity meet. There really is no telling in who's going to get lucky, when it's going to happen or where. Take for example Zahara Marley, a 6-month-old orphan from Ethiopia who was adopted by Angelina Jolie. You can imagine the drastic difference in her life now that she lives with one of Hollywood's biggest stars and it also proves that this had nothing |

The Therapy of Distance Précis
One of the biggest arguments in United States history is how American people came to be known as "Americans", rather than being just Europeans in a new location. Daniel J. Boorstin, author of "The Therapy of Distance" offers us an explanation of how the whole process of Americanization began and was maintained in what is now the United States; Boorstin presents a reader with his idea that the reason why America was able to develop such a unique society from its mother country of England was because of how isolated it was, separated from Europe by 3000 miles of water. He goes on to support his argument by providing different examples of North American society and comparing them with English society, with everything from the governments to the military and even medical matters. He provides a good argument, and it is very hard to argue against it. From the very beginning, colonists were starting to stray from the charters given to them by the British crown, increasi |

My Opinion of the 2012 Presidential Race
Barack Obama's policy position with Iran is about the nuclear program and avoiding military conflict. Barack Obama's opinion about the nuclear program in Iran is that it is a threat to not only our national security, but also our ally, Israel's, national security. Obama's policy is to make sure Iran has no nuclear capabilities. He does this by implementing tough economic sanctions. Some examples of sanctions that Obama has implemented are: 1) He makes sure they cannot export oil to the United States. 2) He controls shipping lanes. 3) He is restricting the flow of money into the country. By implementing these crippling sanctions, the goal of the Obama's administration is to get Iran to give up its nuclear program. The work on setting up crippling sanctions is difficult and when it comes to tightening sanctions, Obama states he has put in the toughest sanctions ever. Obama wants to assure that Iran does not try to get nuclear weapon materials. He has said |

Teaching Violence
Violence is a presumptive terror of physiological or psychological pressure, or the act of coercion deliberately to induce hurt to a sentient or group of entities. The significant things to know are that there needs to be purpose to distress someone and that the trauma is forced on realistic things instead of lifeless things. Hostility in the media is effortlessly available to a child's surroundings. It happens in animations, in news stations, in sports programs, and in late night movies on television. Parents frequently sense being bombarded by these programs as they cannot be expected. There are progressive instances of teenage criminals, young people, and adults breaking the law such as killing someone, physical harm and stealing. Other citizens or people in society often find themselves inquiring why this is occurring. Pictures and other underlying subjects discovered on the television are frequently the influence. Research in psychology has proved why it is damaging to disclose me |

Attracting and Retaining the Best Employees
Many employers today face significant challenges when it comes to finding and retaining talent. There is a growing population of retirees, and an up and coming younger workforce with different attitudes about work. In today's global economy, job opportunities can be rather ubiquitous too. It's not good for any company when they spend massive resources recruiting, hiring, and training replacements, all so they can leave in a year. With such a competitive market for talent and the lack of employee loyalty, how do companies succeed in attracting and retaining the best workers to fit their company? One thing a firm can do, create an effective and efficient branding campaign. Employee branding is a term that has emerged via the high rate |
