Finding the American Dream

"In the United States, one major ideology has been the American Dream, which suggests that equality of opportunity exists and that your positions in the social class structure are a reflection of what you deserve." According to Wikipedia the American Dream is defined as a national ethos of the United States in which freedom includes the promise of prosperity and success. According to James Truslow Adams, he states that life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement, regardless of social class or circumstances of birth. The idea of the American Dream is rooted in the United States Declaration of Independence which proclaims that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights including Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Each individual comes to the United States in search for a better life. They want to seek religious freedom, equality, educ

Our Influence on Global Climates

The world's scientific experts agree that industrial and land use activities are having an adverse impact on our climate. Burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gasoline creates global warming pollution that acts as the glass in a greenhouse, reflecting heat back toward the Earth and warming our climate. If we do not take steps now to reduce our emissions of global warming pollution, we will suffer serious environmental, public health, and economic repercussions. We owe it to our next generations to leave them a healthy environment and economy. Industries must start reducing their emissions of global warming pollution before we seal the fate of future generations. The earth's climate is predicted to change because human activities are altering the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases (primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide). Its functions are similarly to the walls and roof of a greenhouse, allowing sunlight to enter, bu

Why I'm A Competitive Gamer

To most kids, gaming has such unlimited attractions that it seemed to have taken away their souls. Everyone wanted to be the hero in games. And of course, I am one of them. I started playing games at 8 years old. At first, it was all about having fun, until I met Counter-Strike 1.5, which made me become a more serious competitive gamer I am today. My first memory about games was FC games. We had to go to the gaming station to play them secretly, because our parents thought playing games is harmful to our studies and an FC was too expensive for a normal family. Unfortunately, one day I was caught right outside the station by my mother. She was upset and warned me seriously that if I would go to this place again, I would lose all my pocket money. I was frightened and had to give up. However, after 2 weeks, my desire came back because my uncle bought one. My uncle was also a gamer, he was like 35 years old at that time. Although he was not rich and the FC machine cost him 200 yuan whi

Sexual Culture and Childhood

As it is often said in the media "Sex Sells", in fact sex sells so well that television media has deposited sexuality into virtually everything. A problem is incurred when the vulnerable are touched by these societal norms that should only impact adult or at least those who are able to reason and choose if they want to portray sexuality. Through this is an effective marketing tactic; boundaries are pushed when television sexuality enters girlhood. There is a sense of loss when the sexualization of girls is used as to gain profit. They are faced with vulgarities on television and sometimes dressed identical to teenagers as young as five. The effects of this are all too familiar. Little girls grow up believing that they are, in fact, their abilities lay in their sexuality. Preoccupied with making profit television, through advertising and sexual portrayal of girls have contributed to the loss of childhood. The commercialization of our culture has resulted in use of children a

Gang Affiliation

Gang affiliation has been an ongoing insure though out the entire world as far back as the world remembers. The Federal Bureau of Prisons states that, "Some suggest they first emerged following the Mexican migration to the Southwest after the Mexican Revolution in 1813. Gangs appear to have spread in New England in the early 1800's as the Industrial Revolution gained momentum in the first large cities in the United States: New York, Boston, and Philadelphia" (Gaes. 2001). There are many issues that come about from gangs and it's affecting our youth at younger ages as more juveniles turn towards the acceptance of groups in order to fulfill security, pride, and want to fit in with the ones who surround them. The delinquency rate of children is increasing rapidly and with the pressure from social demands some of our youth are turning to gang affiliation as a way of life. Our prison rates have never been higher, which also includes the juvenile system that incl

The Rewards and Challenges of Teaching

The teaching profession is universally lauded, with teachers praised as self-sacrificing role models of inspiration and creativity. Indeed, teachers are often deified for their efforts at shaping young minds and guiding them along the path of enlightenment and education. Yet, the idea that the teaching profession is exclusively rewarding and satisfying is misguided, and to me the reality of teaching, like the reality that for every one glittering work of art created, a thousand artistic duds are first produced, is often one of frustration to the point of exasperation. My successful teaching experience begins with preparation. Good preparation is essential, for fielding questions from curious minded children is one of the hardest aspects of the teaching process. If I am unprepared and fail to adequately respond to an insightful inquiry, then all credibility is lost and I no longer have the respect of the class. Another, perhaps more important element of the teaching process, entails the ability to communicate the lesson plan in an articulate and persuasive manner. There is often a significant disconnect between my intellectual abilities and verbal

Lilith - The Female Demon in Beloved, by Toni Morrison

Lilith is a poignant character in Jewish, Christian, and Greek Mythology, who is generally perceived as a female demon. Theologians believe Lilith to be an evil demon that controls a certain number of animals, and it wasn't until nearly 100 A.D. that visual depictions appear of her and her animals. Lilith is also related to motherhood because Lilith represents the power that women draw from giving birth. In short, Lilith is a demon that is deceitful in every manner: socially, physically, and mentally. In Shirley A. Stave's criticism, Toni Morrison's Beloved and the Vindication of Lilith, Stave explains Toni Morrison's use of the myth Lilith in her novel, Beloved, and how Morrison explores the artifacts of motherhood in Beloved with great ebullience. Stave correctly identifies instances when Morrison employs Biblical allusions, adulthood, and parallelisms between the legend and the novel itself. Stave makes her point clear; the role of motherhood in Beloved is represented by the fe

Romanticism in the Works of Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe is an easy author to identify as being a Romanticism writer. He was a writer that leaned toward emotions; dark emotions. Poe leaned towards the unordinary, the unrealistic, and the mysterious. Edgar Allen Poe was a master at keeping the reader engaged and turning the pages. (The American Romantic Movement, no date). "The Tell-Tale Heart" is a story that falls into the Romanticism category but also can be found within the lines of Dark Romanticism. The narrator of this famous story is most famously known for the insanity that he possesses. The reader soon realizes exactly how insane the narrator truly is. Whether it is when he murders his neighbor simply because of his eye, or how he catches

Why Gay Marriage Should be Legalized

There are numerous opinions and standing views on gay marriage. The argument regarding gay marriage being legalized or not is extremely controversial. According to an article from the Human Rights Campaign, there is nothing wrong with allowing homosexuals to have the same rights as those who are heterosexual. Every individual person should be granted equal rights, regardless of sexuality. Gay marriage should be legalized in all states and countries, it has been held off for too long. Moreover, there are several reasons why homosexuals feel strongly about wanting to be legally married. One reason that is most commonly heard is, they want to legally show their love for each other by having a marriage license. Homosexuals want the right to marry like anybody else, and for the same reasons too. They are in love and want to spend their lives with this person. Even though it is possible to do this without being married; "they want to honor their relationship in the greatest way our soc

Students and Cyber-Bullying

Cyber-bullying has been a problem for a very long time. Due to the development of our technology today, cyber-bullying has become one of the most difficult issues to resolve in our society. Since cyber-bullying issues are more likely to happen at schools, social networking, and mobile phones; Teachers, principals, and parents are responsible for monitoring, preventing, and punish cyber-bullying. The expectations of most parents in the school is protection. Meanwhile, many staff feels unprepared and unwilling to be prosecutors and judges because they do not want to be sued for something done which might seem right to them but not to others, especially to parents who are responsible for the child's well being. Students and teachers should always have conversations about relationships on a daily basis. Although teachers can't preach kindness to students; but they can teach students how to be nice and kind to one another. Teachers need to structure learning activities in which children ca

Factors That Led to The Spread of Islam

Islam began in Mecca when the Prophet Muhammad began to spread the word of God. The Prophet "sought to warn his people against worshipping false gods and all immortality, especially injustice to the poor, orphans, widows, and women altogether." The first converts of the religion were Meccan townsfolk and farmers. While some prominent Meccans joined him, the aristocracy generally resisted his teachings. According to the Qur'an, paradise lies in gratitude to God as well as in his guidance and forgiveness. Muhammad is accepted as the last of many prophets chosen to spread the word of God. Unfortunately, the prophet's teachings did not readily spread and succeed. Still, many peoples followed his wife, Khadija, and recognized him as a "chosen reformer." After Muhammad's death, the lack of a successor or son led to a political struggle between the Meccan and Medinan peoples. This ended when Abu Bakr was selected as the successor to the Prophet. However,as in most previous cases, many Arab tribes renounced allegiance to the prophet after his death. Nevertheless, the rule of Abu

A Speech That Helped Win the Vote: Susan B. Anthony

America has always been defined by the constitution, the amendments, and most importantly, by the people of the United States. Notice what is not listed: the freedoms given to the people of the United States by these three crucial establishments. This one incredibly significant element is not mentioned here because, throughout history, freedom has not been enjoyed by all who should have had freedom in the US. Susan B. Anthony is a prime example of a woman denied her freedoms and considered less than a full citizen of the United States of America. Women's suffrage will forever be linked with Anthony because she became a symbol of women's voting rights when she took matters into her own hands and voted before it was legal. Writing her speech in defense of this action, as we will discuss, Anthony clearly puts words to her mindset at the time of her arrest. Susan B. Anthony begins her speech using, "I," which implies that what she is stating is from her, by her,

Interracial Relationships in Film and Literature

Kate Chopin depicts miscegenation in her story, but this is concept is introduced differently in the film based upon it. The main character Chopin wrote about, Armand, she describes as being half- black and half-white, and this lineage is plausible considering, as Chopin establishes, his parents met in France, and in France at the time, there was not the problem of segregation. When he came to America to become a slave owner, he marries a woman who does not know her original roots, and so this seems perfect for him. This enables him to blame her for the problems he has because of his color in America. Instead of his white wife being the dominate member of the relationship, as prejudice would assume, Armand, instead, is the aggressive, dominating spouse. When she has his baby, the baby is born black. He accuses her of sleeping with a slave. The movie version shows that the dysfunction came from the white couples who were having marital issues in the film because Warren Maxwell seemed to have more feeling for the black women that he s

What is Beauty?: Beauty In Its Many Forms

Beauty is often equated with physical appearance, but beauty can be perceived with the eyes and felt with the heart. It really is true, as they say, that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." We all have different opinions and standards for what constitutes beauty. We may all get a similar feeling when seeing beauty, but its definition is much different from person to person, and the source of those feelings can greatly differ from person to person. People may believe actors or actresses starring in major motion pictures represent beauty, while others may see little to no beauty in Hollywood, preferring, instead, scenic locations worldwide. Beauty can be how the sunset looks with its bright, beautiful colors or the sight of shiny stars in the sky on a summer night. How do blind people perceive beauty since they cannot physically see it? They sense beauty with their hearts. Beauty in nature often gives artists the motivation to paint the scenery. Experienced painters have a practiced eye that captures the beauty and sometimes even magnifies it. Some paintings m

Swift's Satirical Voice and "Gulliver's Travels"

"Gulliver's Travels" is a novel by Jonathan Swift, an Irish writer whose writing functions as social criticism. His sarcasm and his habit of blending facts and fiction together made him a great satirist. This particular novel was written in 1726. Swift, born in Dublin, tells a tale of four voyages with imaginary lands serving to highlight different aspects of human nature and society. Lemuel Gulliver is the protagonist in "Gulliver's Travels." He is taken to various, fictional situations where he learns to adapt to the other characters' ways of life and ultimately to survive all of these challenging differences. During Gulliver's first travel, he visits "Lilliput." The Lilliputians were a race of people six inches high. Gulliver "mocks the pettiness of the English" during this visit. He becomes a slave but finds a way to escape from his tiny hosts who considered him a threat, as he was a giant to them. On the second voyage, Gulliver encounters

Posthumous Internet and Email Privacy

Reading an article recently, I learned that a young marine by the name of Justin Ellsworth was killed in the line of duty. His parent wanted access to all of his belongings, including his email information. Yahoo, as the email provider, denied the family access to his emails due to its privacy policy that states that its accounts are nontransferable and that, "rights to the Yahoo! I.D. and contents within the account terminate upon death." "Destroying the data once the contract ends simplifies life for Internet service providers (ISPs)," says Mr. Chappell. The family then too Yahoo to court. The judge granted the family access to Justin's emails, and Yahoo had to hand them over. John Ellsworth, Justin's father, learned that there were more than 10,000 pages of email messages and photographs on the disc (Chambers). I, for one, am not in total agreement with either the judge's or yahoo's decision. Nor am I in total agreement with the family gaining access to Justin's e

The Wikipedia Debate: A Researcher's Friend or Foe?

For years, any time I had to tackle something to do with research, I have been advised by teachers and peers to stay away from Wikipedia. The reason for this warning has been that my peers and teachers have felt that there are biased articles on the topics being researched. I heeded the warning and continued to stay away from it, although with many of my searches online, Wikipedia would work its way to the top. I only recently learned that a Wikipedia page can be edited by anyone, and this does cause me to believe that there, in fact, are articles that are one-sided and inaccurate. At the same time, I recently learned reading an article called, "The Wars of Words on Wikipedia's Outskirts" that there are editors who try to keep the biased views on the site as limited as possible. This increases my confidence in Wikipedia as a resource to some extent. One of the panel members on the Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee, a Mr. Davies, pointed out, "One of the problems we keep bumping into is what I call core belief issues - politics, religion,

Captain John Smith's Great Plea for Settlers

Captain John Smith's 1616 treatise, "A Description of New England," calls all the youthful, adventurous, and even the timid souls of England to join Smith on the journey to the New World. There, argues, Captain Smith, awaits great fortune, gratification, and recognition for these brave entrepreneurs. In his plea for followers, he begins with the following question: "Who can desire more content, that hath shall means; or but only his merit to advance his fortune, than to tread, and plant that ground he hath purchased by the hazard of his life? If he have but the taste of virtue, and magnanimity, what to such a mind can be more pleasant, than planting and building a foundation for his posterity, got from the rude earth, by God's blessing and his own industry, without prejudice to any? (54)." Captain Smith uses his treatise to convey to prospective co-travelers how prosperous New England life will be for them. He believes that the new settlements will be an inspiration for G

The Six Styles of Procrastination

Procrastination is known as "putting off or delaying or deferring an action to a later time." The article, "How Do You Procrastinate?", by Linda Sapadin and Jack Maguire, states that many people are striving for a good job to ensure a happy life, but only some will achieve this goal, and procrastination often plays a major role in preventing people from achievement. Two hypothetical people are referenced in the article, Andy and Maureen. Andy and Maureen are on the same track which is, "getting a better job", but unfortunately, Andy fails to reach his goal because of his habits of procrastinating, laziness, and giving up too soon. Maureen, on the other hand, achieves her goal with all of her hard work and with her ongoing enthusiasm and faith in herself that she would find a good job. Individuals often procrastinate to avoid a challenging situation or for a temporary relief from something difficult. Procrastination is produced when there is an internal conflict, stemming from not being sure what you want or what you need the most. Some degree of procrastination is natural for all human beings. The wa

The Future of Genetically Modified Food

Genetically modified food has been a topic of much debate ever since it was first introduced to the market in the early 1990s. Safety issues and economic as well as ecological concerns have been raised by many. While it is evident that there was a food supply issue the question is whether genetically modified food, or GMF, can solve world hunger problems, or even if that would be the best way to address the issue. Nina Fedoroff argues in her New York Times article "Engineering Food for All" that as food prices continue rising so does the number of people who may not be able to afford higher priced food. Unnecessary regulation by the EPA, Department of Agriculture, and Food and Drug Administration has slow down improving technology to allow for faster production of GMF. Evidence and extensive research over the past 25 years has shown no danger in producing modified crops. Fedoroff wants to see regulation lifted and a simple set of requirements focused on any hazards posed by gene mod
