Falkland Wars

The history of the islands of the Falklands dates back to 500 years from today. The island has been a matter of utmost controversy, especially in the 18th century. Many nations have claimed their right to the island including the British, Argentines, French as well as the Spaniards. The Falkland Islands are located in the South of the Atlantic Ocean, more than two hundred and ninety miles east from the coast of the South American mainland[1]. The European nations which have been at constant wars at sea have been in a continuous conflict over the authority of different colonies or islands. This has been a routine since a number of years. However, due to the existence of numerous powers in the time, treaties were normally signed in order to settle disputes or conflicts. These treaties were clearly defined and they either transferred the ownership of the land back to the previous owner or transferred to the conquering nation. It majorly depended on the power of the nations at that particu

Ethics, Justice and Morality

What is ethics? Ethics is the moral principles that govern a person's behavior. Ethics is about conforming one's life to the best, universal, moral principles. There are two types of moral reasoning that have been discussed over the years, and also in the book article "The Need for More than Justice", by Annette C. Baier who argues that justice perspective by itself is inadequate as a moral theory. On one hand there is Kohlberg's point of view, which many people know by Kohlberg's justice, on the other hand is Gilligan's point of view known as Gilligan's Care. Kholberg was a professor around the 1070's. Kohlberg's point of view states that there are stages in moral reasoning which is also the base of ethical behavior. According to Kohlberg each stage depends on the other in order of importance and significance to the person. There are three levels and each level consists of two sequential stages. Level one is the pre-conventional mor

Cinderella: Not So Morally Superior

In the article "Cinderella: Not So Morally Superior," Elisabeth Panttaja argues that Cinderella isn't successful because of her virtues, hard work, or patience, but because she's willing to and uses magic to defeat her enemies. Her article is based on the idea that Cinderella isn't such a "princess" after all, and that she has moral flaws as well. Panttaja downplays some of Cinderella's positive aspects that add to a better, more princess-like character. Her main issues are with Cinderella's mother and with the presence of love regarding the prince. The author begins her argument by addressing her issues regarding Cinderella's mother. In most Cinderella stories that we're familiar with, Cinderella's mother is basically nonexistent in terms of the story&ap

A Barred Owl: Poetry Analysis

Richard Wilbur's poem "A Barred Owl" consists of 2 stanzas each made up of 6 lines of about the same length and one sentence each. Each stanza consists of a rhyming pattern of AABBCC. In the first line the "B" in "boom" recalls the "B" in "brought". The word "boom" is onomatopoeia. "Warping night" and "having brought" both have similar endings with the "ing" and the "ght" and this is a form of internal rhyme. There is also internal rhyme with "darkened", "wakened" and "listened" in the second, third and fifth line. Internal rhyme makes the lines flow together. There are many words with "D" sounds in the first stanza such as "da", "ed", ld", "rd", and "odd". There is a break in the 5th line accentuated by a comma which slows the rhythm of that line. There is personification of the owl when it is ab

Identity Theft: Stealing Our Identities

I. Introduction The risks for identity theft are hard to avoid, especially since we are all interconnected through the worldwide web. Online criminals' main goal is to steal your personal information. If they can find out your name, address, Social Security number, birth date or other personal information they will. They will even try to open new credit lines and access your bank accounts. Some may even apply for a driver's license or passport; all in your name. You may have a criminal record and not even know it because of these online thieves. Identity theft has been going on since the earliest of ages. The phrase "identity theft" was coined in 1936, but has going on much before that. In fact, it used to be a violent crime, but now with the Internet it makes theft much easier (FTC). The new ease of accessing information makes it extremely important that you take the steps necessary to protect your name. The first step is to be aware of the great and even irreplaceable costs of iden

Archetypes in The North Wind and the Sun

"The North Wind and the Sun," is an old tale that has carried on through the ages, thought to have originated from a slave named "Aesop," whom lived in ancient Greece. At first glance this fable may seem short and simple; however it is filled with cleaver archetypes that interact together in order to teach the reader about the art of persuasion. By examining the following passage we can become familiar with the archetypes; "A dispute arose between the North Wind and the Sun, each claiming that he was stronger than the other. At last they agreed to try their powers upon a traveler, to see which could soonest strip him of his cloak." We find two different and opposing personas: the "North Wind," and the "Sun." Without looking further into the fable the reader can associate the North Wind, with someone who is overbearing, and would use sheer force of will to influe

Innovation, Sustainability and the Human Race

Since the beginning of evolution, humans have been creating innovative ways to simplify life. From the discovery of fire to modern advances in technology, the main objective was to simplify adversity in life. Although modern advances in technology have proven advantageous, few people take the time to review what affect this imposes on the environment and planet, specifically the consumption, and production of material resources. With modern technology, and conclusive data from extensive research, a person must wonder why America does not take a stronger initiative to protect the environment. By conserving natural resources this will aid in maximizing and improving future ecosystem opportunities. It is detrimental to future generations and livelihood to take measures to protect natural resources. If America does not make current changes to do so, future generations will be at risk, potentially leaving these generations in depletion of natural resources. In relation to human consumpti

The "Killer Clown", John Wayne Gacy

Robert Hare is North America's most renowned academic on psychopaths. Utilizing the basis of the components of Hare's theory and his "Psychopath Checklist (PCL) which was later revised to the PCL-R" (Wikipedia, 2013, Hare), it is possible to analyze John Wayne Gacy's criminal career. This checklist has specific scoring criteria rating 20 items on a 3-point scale corresponding to the extent that it applies to a given individual. With the psychopathic behaviours identified by Hare's PCL-R, it can be implied that Gacy would score above 30 on this scale and therefore be considered a primary psychopath. Gacy is considered to be America's most coldblooded killer. What the world viewed him as before being arrested and convicted of his heinous acts was a successful businessman; a social pillar in his community; volunteer; an active member of the Jaycee's; an ethical man; a man of stature; a good father and family man. Joining the "Jolly Jokers" in 1975, he created his character "Pogo the Clo

My Philosophy of Coaching

The philosophy of coaching that I want to express to my players is that playing sports is a gift. I believe all athletes should approach sports that way. Sports were made to give normal people ways to have fun, and that is the way sports should be continually looked at. I value all sports and I value the way that I am lucky enough to be able to play and to coach sports. I value the togetherness that sports bring as well as the competitiveness that derives from competition. As a coach, I believe that often athletes do not stop and think about how fortunate they really are. Athletes need to be happy about the gifts they were given. As a coach, I also believe in sports always being fun. Sports were invented to promote fun and I always want to keep it that way. When sports stop being fun then they are not worth being involved in. I have formed this philosophy from a combination of things. My parents have never forced me to join anything sports-related. They have always told me that I

Germany: An Overview

Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen and Audi; when we think of these cars, we tend to think about Germany. Though it is known for it's engineering and being one of the leading motor sports countries in the entire world, Germany has much more to offer. In the past Germany was a country that faced warfare, separation and rule under different people, but today Germany deals with none of these issues. Located in central country Europe, Germany is lies south of Denmark and between Poland and Netherlands. The two bodies of water that Germany borders are the Baltic Sea and North Sea, which in turn produce 2, 389 kilometers of coastline for the country. The Germany that we know today did not come to be overnight. The events that account for the independence of Germany goes back much further into the past. In December of 800, Charlemagne found the Carolingian Empire, which in turn was divided in 843. The eastern portion of the division, which became known as the medieval empire, existed

Sophocles' Antigone

Antigone, the ancient play by Sophocles, addresses a universal conflict that is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. The conflict between church and state or faith and government is seen every day in the media, most recently in the refusal of Catholic Church to offer health care plans that cover birth control and family planning for their employees. Sophocles addresses the two viewpoints through the dispute between Creon, the King of Thebes, and his determined niece Antigone. By the end of the poem it is obvious that both parties are at fault for their unwillingness to compromise. The conflict arises after Antigone's brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, have killed one another in combat while warring over the right to rule Thebes. With the heirs to Thebes dead, Antigone's uncle Creon takes the throne. As the new ruler, Creon feels he should show the people that is just and that his word in law. Creon's proclaims that no one may bury the body Polyneices,

The Moral Atheist

Many theists have claimed that morality and obedience to their version of "god" must walk hand in hand or one cannot be considered as a "moral agent". Altruism, they contend for instance, is an inborn motivation placed within the human genetic construct by "god" (Rachlin, 2002. p. 241). Further, they claim that selfishness is a greater motivator of human behavior than selflessness (Rachlin, 2002). While religion provides a standard of behavior that is considered moral by those who adhere to that ideology, it operates on the false assumption that human beings are incapable of rising above their selfish nature to make moral decisions without the intervention of a "higher" intelligent force or being (Van den beld, 2001. p. 384). As Reno (2012) states, "20 percent of Americans now check 'none' when asked about their religious affiliation (p. 3)." Despite this growing trend in secularism, the majority of Americans maintain a very

Gender and Hand-Grip Strength

Hand-grip strength plays an important role in assessing clinical situations, daily activities such as picking up a glass full of water, and for vocational reasons. Measurement of hand-grip strength determines the isometric strength of the muscles. Isometric strength or static, or static, strength is the muscle contraction in the joint angle that does not have a change in length but it affects the muscle tension and connective tissues. Hand-grip strength measures the muscles of the hand and the forearm. Studies have shown that the dominant hand is usually stronger than the non-dominant hand due to capability and daily use of the hand known to be dominant. A cross-sectional study conducted by Luna-Heredia, E, Martin- Pena, G, and Ruiz-Galiana, J assessed the effects of hand-grip strength on 517 subjects with 267 of them being females and 229 being males to test out the normal reference values of hand-grip strength in men and women related to anthropometry.2 The grip-strength was mea

African American Males and Secondary Education

Indviduals who attend post-secondary institutions tend to strive on activities and sub-groups that enrich their cultural heritage. Black males may increase their chances of graduation by attending historically black colleges and universities; learning more about their heritage and developing a strong self-identity helps by strengthening their core values and beliefs. This topic is significant because it focuses on one group's struggle for equal opportunity in pursuing education. Conflict theory, in general, focuses on the struggles between different groups in society. Conflict theorists thrive off of instability and the blatant disrespect of the status quo. African -American males have the most gender differences among those who are in college. According to (Palmer, 2010), when compared to their female counterparts, the rate of the retention black males to females reached 28.6 percent in 2007, compared to 8.7 percent in 1976. Conflict theory often stresses that culture is the main e

The Dynamics of Flirting

The 21st century has revolutionized the way we interact with others and view the world; technology made it is easier to communicate, network, and even flirt with others. Computers transformed themselves into becoming the new "cupid" via instant messaging, chat-rooms and online dating in which flirting is easier in these spaces. Also the rise of social networking sites even made it possible to find a significant other; for example, my friend met his current girlfriend of six months through Facebook. However, there are still remnants of traditional flirting in the sense where we still meet people who attracts us at common locations, such as a bar or party. Both offline and online flirting have similar goals of starting and following a sexual and/or romantic relationship with other people; but simultaneously, they have different approaches in meeting new people. With the use of my interview, I am going to analyze the male and female perspective of flirting online and offline and

Alexie and Walker - Short Story Comparison

In Sherman J. Alexie's "This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona" and Alice Walker's "Everyday Use," family and culture are important themes throughout each character's lives. Both short stories display symbolic objects important for when the characters reach their moment of epiphany, turning them into round characters. Despite the difference in each story's setting and cultural background, the overall similarity in themes of family and culture, use of symbols, and growth of each character in a time where old customs clash with new customs holds significant meaning. Even though the characters of the two short stories grow up in an entirely different environment, the importance of family is a theme that runs deep within the characters' hearts. Alexie writes about Victor, a boy growing up on a reservation. He has a connection with his father although he has not "seen his father in a few years, had only talked to him on the telephon

How I'm Discovering Myself

I never knew what the true meaning of "discovering yourself" meant until I had taken this class. I have found out a lot of what my strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles were just by doing some very simple exercises. The assignment that I enjoyed doing while covering this topic was the "Discovery Wheel" In our textbook the meaning of the discovery wheel is an opportunity, to tell the truth about what kind of student you want to become, and it can also be used as a picture to how you see yourself "From Master Student To Master Employee" (Ellis 2011). Although the discovery wheel is not meant to be used as a negative judgment or a permanent picture of who I am it does make me aware of what kind of student I can be or could be for the duration of my education. When I did this exercise, I did it with an open mind. When I had finished the discovery wheel and looked at the outcome, I wasn't very shocked with some of the results however it did make me sit back and think about what I ha

Future of Global Products

The globalization of markets concept has been a highly controversial issue in current marketing circles. Some managers believe the future of organizations depends on the successful marketing of brands with a highly universal marketing mix on a world basis. Some believe that global marketing is impractical and that insensitivity to local needs will make the strategy fail. One of the most controversial areas has been global new product development. Some managers feel that innovative new global products are critical. Others believe that development of new products for home markets is the only practical strategy and that global new product development is far too risk-laden and complex. Most organizations were local in focus and would require major changes in strategy, organization and process to globalize. The ability to implement such a program properly may well be a major obstacle. Finding the right people to carry out this compl

Financial Accounting and Reporting Standards

Since 1973, in the United States, financial accounting and reporting standards have been developed and maintained by FASB in the private sector. With the mission to "establish and improve standards of financial accounting and reporting for the guidance and education of the public, including issuers, auditors, and users of financial information" (Schroeder, Clark, & Cathey, 2011, p. 11), FASB's work was viewed favorably by many countries and many of its basic concepts influenced the development of similar frameworks (Kaminski & Carpenter, 2011). On the other hand, the IASB was established in 2001, preceded by the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) that operated from 1973 to 2001 (IASB, 2011). The IASB's mission is to develop a set of high-quality standards that are acceptable worldwide (Barth, 2006). The FASB believes in the internationalization of the accounting standards to benefit the users of its financial reports and is committed to convergence its standards wit

Women and Resistance in Los Angeles

For many years, women across the world have been treated differently. Despite, the long vigorous fight that women had to endure, to reach equality. Women are still treated different, especially women of color. Yet, this did not stop the courageous women of East Los Angeles when they decided to fight for what they believed to be right. The courageous fight that these Latina women took began in the mid 1980's. When the state of California decided to make some alterations in Los Angeles. These Latina women were sitting in church service at Resurrection Church when they heard the horrendous news. " The state proposed building a one hundred million prison across the Los Angeles River from Boyle Heights (Gold 8 )." When these women heard what the state of California had proposed, they were livid. The first thing they could think of, was what example would this set for their children. Aside from the state of California wanting to dump a prison in middle of the commu

Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)

I have been teaching in lower primary school classroom for 7 years. I have notice that every year, teaching our children gets harder and harder. Besides that, the education system has made many changes and now Brunei advocate a new education known as Sistem Pendidikan Negara Abad ke-21 (SPN 21). By these changes, teachers have to follow and find the suitable teaching approach to meet the children needs in learning. Many children are unable to concentrate, to make active mental effort to learn or to regulate their emotion and social reaction to others (Carol, 2000). This makes teaching and learning more difficult. I learnt a lot, after attending lectures and reading few facts about Vygotsky's theory of development. However, the more I read, the more there is to understand about people views. I think Vygotsky's theory is the most representative to my own beliefs about young children's development. In his theory, he explained the important application

Personalities in Twelve Angry Men

All twelve of the jurors in the film have very different personalities. According to the textbook "Human Communication in Society: Jess K. Alberts", one of the seven main components of the communication process are the participants (pg 12). If there are a large number of participants that have different personalities, it will be very difficult to have a successful conversation. This proved to be true in the film, as it took the twelve men very long to come to a mutual agreement. During the process of coming to an agreement, the men were very frustrated and constantly argued. Another main component of the communication process also played a role in the difficult decision the twelve men had to make. Noise is any stimulus that can distra
