Globalization, Poverty and Labor Structures
Globalization, accumulation of capital and therefore economic restructuring are crucial elements in the way the world is organized and wealth is distributed. The development of capitalist world economy is heavily dependent on the particular division of labor that governs a nation's market. The concept of International Division of Labor (IDL) reflects the vertical relationship that exists among First World countries or developed countries and Third World countries or the developing countries. One should note that while the terms First world, Third world, developed and developing countries are often used in a pejorative way. It is not the intention of this essay to contribute to the discursive reduction of the countries discussed, nor is it the intention to reinforce binaries that allow for a vertical relationship of power to exist among the privileged and the less fortunate. For the purpose of this essay, IDL will refer to the new system of the world economy where the continuous g |

American Opportunity
Opportunity is defined in Webster's Dictionary as "a good position, chance or prospect for achievement," which can be compared to the idea of The American Dream. After all, America is known as "the land of opportunity," Most people come to America in search of a better life and achieve it through hard work and dedication to their cause. The poem by Jimmy Santiago Baca, "So Immigrants Are Taking Jobs from Americans," and the interview by Studs Terkel "Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dream" are united under the subject of immigrants, but separated by how each views opportunity differently, depending on one's ethnicity. First of all, in the poem of Santiago Baca, he implies that immigrants do not have opportunities in this country, that there is no American dream. His narrator observes, "I see the poor marching for a little work, I see small white farmers selling out to clan-suited farmers living in New York" (Baca 1111). Here, the narrator implies that immigrants come to this country in the hope of finding a better world, but what they find is the sad reality of an immigrant: acquiring poor paying jobs and taking the leftover jobs. In the same way, Baca's poem denotes ne |

Sportsmanship
"One who plays a sport fairly and loses gracefully" is how The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines sportsmanship. What is a sportsman? The definition seems to have undergone a big change over the years. If children today follow athletes of the definition of what sportsmanship mean it would turn out to be equal to a sore loser. Let's relate it to High school sports where kids/teens have a way to have fun physically and mentally to express their self as an athlete but at the same time learn the fundamentals of life, sportsmanship, discipline, and respect. Today in our society the word "winning" isn't everything but for the love of the game and showing good sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is a a very big matter not only in sports it relates to but for our everyday life. From competitions, job interviews, school science fair, or even gambling, the word and meaning of sportsmanship teaches you to win modestly and lose graciously. Although it is very common to mention the |

Comparing "The Tell Tale Heart" and "The Yellow Wallpaper"
"The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and the "Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe equally illustrate characters that in the view of other people are insane. The characters' out of control activities due to their insanity is proved as the stories progress. "The Yellow Wallpaper" was written for a motive to reveal how women were treated in society in the 19th Century. "The Tell-Tale heart" was written principally for the reason of entertainment. As he gets to the end of any of the stories, the reader understood that the madness of both narrators had a huge role in determining their reliability and their point of view. Using the first person narrator by Edgar Allen Poe in the "Tell Tale Heart", demonstrated a sophisticated capability in showing his unreliability. The narrator's imagination was revealed involuntarily through the story, which resulted in an unmanageable personality. The old man was murdered by the narra |

Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden
Many of us go day by day living our lives without appreciating the true value of family. We occasionally take for granted the individuals who have brought us into this world, and generally forget to thank them for all they have done. I myself have fallen in this category, as I frequently bypass all my mother does for me, and often forget to thank her. This never seemed like a huge issue at first, but I was surprised on the joyous look on my mothers face when i acknowledged her for all she's done. In reading Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden, I found a direct comparison of what my situations at home were like. In the first stanza we get a sense of how hard a worker the father really is, and how he isn't really acknowledged for all he does. We see this in detail in the very first line " Sundays too my father got up early" which gives us an understanding that he w |

A Productive American Economy
America's economy today has plundered to a new low and unless we do something about the current trends, the situation will only worsen. In 2008, America experienced a tragic financial crisis and the blame was instantly placed on the shoulders of Wall Street. However, many economists, such as Robert B. Reich, argue that the cause of this economic meltdown did not come from people messing around with the stocks and corporate shares but rather from the actual structure of the country's economy. In the book, Aftershock, Reich discusses the structure of our economy in what he calls the basic economic bargain. At the root of a highly productive economy, the workers are not only employees but also consumers (Reich 28). The earnings from these workers are used to purchase the goods and services produced by other workers. But when the workers' taxed earnings no longer suffice for their most basic needs, then the basic bargain becomes broken. This causes the production of goods and services to b |

A Fascination with Psychopaths
Manipulation, superficial charm, and possessing a terrifying calmness towards danger are traits every human being has attempted to explore. These horrifyingly common characteristics are shown in William Shakespeare's play, Richard III( Act I, scene iii), "And thus I clothe my naked villainy...and seem a saint when most I play the devil." This play poetically describes psychopaths, devious, animalistic, and self-interested. What makes them scary is the fact that most serial killers are psychopaths and do not feel remorse or guilt for raping, maiming, or killing people. Sadly, the world is fascinated with psychopaths to the extent that several of them are famous. People are captivated by the evilness of humanity because they clothe their naked villainies as well. Psychopathy has always existed in society and has played large roles in myths and legends. Medea is a notorious psychopathic character from Greek and Roman mythology. She took revenge on her husband for leavi |

The Fiscal Initiative of Proposition 13
The popular initiative process has played a role in the evolution of a stronger state presence in local affairs. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the California Constitution was modified with a series of measures approved by the voters that reflected the "progressive" mood of the times, including the initiative, referendum, and recall system. These provisions have significantly influenced the state's fiscal health. State fiscal policymakers find themselves setting policy in response to major policy changes approved by the voters and brought to them by a parallel policy-making process often sponsored by narrow interests that have failed to accomplish the same objective in the legislative process. Perhaps the most famous fiscal initiative was Proposition 13, "The People's Initiative to Limit Property Taxation," proposed by anti-tax activists Howard Jarvis and Paul Gann. This 1978 initiative capped the local property tax rate at 1 percent of full cash value, originally set at |

Stress and Memory Loss
At some point in every persons' life, they will experience some kind of trauma. And though we know the shock of trauma usually occurs instantly, we cannot always anticipate how the anxiety may affect us in the long term. For some, who have personally been exposed to a life threatening event, or have been confronted with any type of seriously disturbing event sometimes develop what is known as acute distress. Acute distress may leave a person feeling frazzled after a few sleepless nights, but it is not something to be exceptionally worried about until it persists for over a month. When this happens it is called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). (Schiraldi, G. 2009) What many people do not realize, is that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can occur at any age, including childhood. Symptoms usually begin within the first 3 months after the trauma, though it can be months, even years before symptoms appear. Many times the symptoms associated with PTSD cause significant problems wi |

Why Bill Clinton Won the 1992 Presidential Election
The 1992 presidential election was a remarkable turning point that changed American national politics. An incumbent president, who only a year before the election was enjoying historic levels of popular approval, was turned out of office by the Democratic nominee and former Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton. Clinton won the 1992 presidential election for a variety of reasons. Primarily his victory could be attributed to his centrist third-way ideology, charisma and appeal to young and minority voters as well as the exploitation of the Bush administration during the state of a poor economy. These, combined with an impressive campaign staff that made good choices throughout the campaign, resulted in the most recent election where the sitting president or incumbent has lost. Scholars have argued that Clinton's campaign structure adopted "an effective blend of informality with clear goal definition, which allowed for structured creativity. The exploitation of key strategic blunders by the |

Marvell's "A Dialogue Between the Soul and Body",
In his poem, "A Dialogue Between the Soul and Body", Andrew Marvell uses intense imagery, unconventional structure, and personification to portray the body and soul as enemies who represent the conflicts between human spirituality and human instinct. Body and Soul are typically viewed as two entities that are codependent on one another, but they entrap and torture each other in this poem. Marvell personifies Body and Soul, and he allows them to debate back and forth throughout the poem. The poem presents the reader with a question: are humans just bodies who are meant to live naturally without a soul to dictate it, or are they souls that are trapped inside of a body and locked in its constraints? Marvell deliberately ends the poem without a clear "winner", allowing the reader to decide for himself. Marvell structures the poem in the form of a debate between the body and the soul, creating an aggressive, combative tone. There are four stanzas, and each sectio |

Kafka's The Hunger Artist
Hunger is a term that is often defined as the physical feeling for the need to eat. However, the Hunger Artist in Kafka's A Hunger Artist places a different, more complex meaning to this word, making the Hunger Artist's name rather ironic. The hunger of the Hunger Artist is not for food. As described at the end of the essay, the Hunger Artist states that he was in fact never hungry, he just never found anything that he liked. So then, what does this man's hunger truly mean? What drives the Hunger Artist to fast for so long, if he is truly not hungry? The Hunger Artist salivates not for the food which he is teased with, nor does he even sneak food when he alone. The Hunger Artist has a hunger for fame, reputation, and honor. This hunger seems to create in the mind of the Artist, a powerfully controlling dream schema. These dreams drive the Artist to unavoidable failure and alienation, which ultimately uncovers the sad truth about the artist. The truth is that the Artist was never an art |

Gurov's Claim
Gurov is an attractive man from the upper class who has been trapped for years in a loveless arranged marriage. Close to forty, he is an experienced seducer. He has had many affairs with different women and is always ready to start a new one. He is cynical and bitter due to his adulteries. Gurov is manipulative and amoral though he possesses contradictory impulses. He has a low opinion of women. Indeed, Gurov calls women the lower race. He believed women were lower because he could manipulate, use and get rid of them as he liked. He claims that he could start any affair with any woman and get whatever he wants then forget them with time as they become boring and disgusting due to their unintelligence and to his numerous previous women experience. He really believed in that claim because he has had experiences and proves. He has been with many girls and many times, he left them and forgot them easily as soon as he has had enough of them. He has never had any remorse about throwing girls away after he has gotten whatever he wanted from them. Gurov met Anna "the lady with the pet dog" and thought |

Schools Involvment with Obesity
Many children in today's society are overweight and ignorant about nutrition. Is this because of bad parenting techniques? Possibly, but children spend a majority of their day at school, and by creating a healthy environment, schools could instill healthy habits in the children's daily routine. Schools should become more involved in combating childhood obesity by creating an environment that includes healthy food and physical education. People in today's society are still against schools incorporating healthy choices into the schools. Some believe it will be very costly to everyone and it would have to be a huge investment of time and resources. They do not believe that more physical education classes and healthier food is worth all of the investments it would take in order to achieve the wanted goals. Also, many believe that even if they were to incorporate health into schools, it would be a waste of resources because students are able to go home and continue living an unhealthy lif |

William Blake: The Tyger and the Lamb
Throughout the history of man, many have pondered that their God seems to work in mysterious ways. Many believe that God has a larger plan than what any mortal can comprehend. This is evident in his creation of beings that are wholesome and virtuous and his creation of dark and evil beings as well. This whole idea of God's mysterious workings has been brought to attention throughout the work of William Blake. Two of the best examples come from his compilation of child's lyrics named "Songs of Innocence and Experience." The two poems that symbolize the ever so mysterious, and sometimes seemingly aimless will of God are called, "The Lamb" and "The Tyger." William Blake was a poet and artist who wrote the majority of his work in the late 1700's. Among many of his other creations, he published the "Songs of Innocence" in 1794 from which "The Lamb" and "The Tyger" are part of (William, 2012). As a young boy |

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine
Three years after the Allied victory of World War II and the tragic details of the Holocaust were revealed to the world, the United Nations recognized Israel as an independent state on May 15th, 1948. Ilan Pappe's The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine is a revisionist work that aims to reveal, as Pappe believes, the true narrative of the 1948 Israeli War of Independence. His main thesis is that David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first Prime Minister, and other Jewish leaders planned and executed a detailed and brutal ethnic cleansing of the Arab population residing in Palestine. Pappe contends that the plan, entitled Plan D or Plan Dalet, was carefully crafted for the Hagana, the precursor to the Israeli army, to carry out even before the British Mandate was lifted and UN Partition went into effect. He contends that early Zionists are mainly to blame for violence towards the Arabs, and that in discussing the events of 1948, the "ethnic cleansing paradigm" should replace the "paradigm of war" when |

Exploring the Roles of Women in Gothic Literature
Charlotte Brontë published her well-known Gothic novel, Jane Eyre, in 1847. The book illustrates a young woman struggling to find her way in a world dominated by men. One year after it was published, the first women's rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York. Since the beginning Gothic literature and the expansion of women's rights, the two topics have intertwined and coexisted together. Gothic writers left clear signs of this coexistence between the two through their works. The roles and responsibilities of men and women were being questioned at the time and they incorporated this into stories. Women's expanding roles are dissected in works such as The Fall of the House of Usher, A Rose for Emily, The Yellow Wallpaper and The Bell Jar. Through Gothic literature's modern, and sometimes feminist, approach to women's evolving responsibilities, the once parallel lines of men and women's roles begin to overlap and blur together. An Essay on Victorian England
England was involved in many conflicts during the 17th century which ended in Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815, in which France was defeated. Now England was entering into an era of relative peace, political and social stability which was called the Victorian Period. Historically the Victorian era is defined by the Monarchy of Queen Victoria's reign (1837-1901). She was a constitutional monarch, which meant that the Monarchy had few powers and who was expected to remain above party politics. She ruled England with a Parliament and two Houses, The House of Lords and the House of Commons. England had grown with its colonial interests to be a world power. Victorian society witnessed a massive transformation in many fields. Advancements in science, technology, and engineering changed and shaped England. Victorian England was a time of new growth, with its military, government, and economy becoming the backbone of the Victorian Age. Generally, the soldier that was in the army was of |

Friedrich Nietzsche: The Abyss
"He who fights with monsters should look to it that he does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." In this statement, Nietzsche is expressing the familiar occurrence of being absorbed by fears, darkness, and even our thoughts. In life, people often find themselves confronted with situations in which they must face certain evils in their life. This quote advises that if you choose to resist these evils, you should take care that you do not become evil yourself. The second part of the quote explains how this is possible. The abyss gazing back at you means that when you begin to know something that is in essences different than yourself, you take a part of it with you and allow it to alter you. Whoever or whatever this enemy may be to you, conveniently allows you to ignore your inner capacity for evil. Those who cannot see the evil in themselves, project it outwards. If you wish for enlightenment, be prepared to know everything evil as well. If you spend all of your time caring about what the things in life that |

Fukushima Nuclear Catastrophe
The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear catastrophe was the largest disaster after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. According to a report released by Japanese government, the amount of radioactivity that was emitted to the atmosphere exceeded the Chernobyl disaster by 10%. One major issue that has been blamed for the disaster is the failure in equipments. At the time of the disaster two out of the six boiling water reactors had shutdown following sequence of events; earthquake and tsunami. However, the international press blamed poor communication between the government and the public, and improvised cleanup systems that ended up failing. As a result, many employees were injured and some died because of the conditions of the disaster. As news streamed daily on the possible leakages from the plant, citizens became concerned on the reluctance of authorities in providing accurate explanations of the circumstances surrounding the problem or even attempt to devise measures of curbing. The Abortion Debate
The debate on whether abortion is right has remained a longstanding source of contention among members of the various fronts of our society. On one hand, proponents claim of the view that making abortion illegal is a contradiction to the ability by women to enjoy their right to life and freedom of choice as fundamental human rights. Opponents on the other hand however claim of the view that abortion amounts to killing. For them, life begins at conception, making abortion for any reasons an act of killing. All in all, given common consensus among scientists that life begins at conception, and that pregnancy can be a threat to the life of women, abortion should be allowed only in serious cases. In the article, A Defense of Abortion, Thompson argues of eminent insufficiencies in most of the common arguments offered by either side on the abortion debate. First, Thompson argues on the view on the impermissible abortion ,even when such risks the life of the mother as an extreme view. For |

Placing Judges
A good judge is someone whom upholds justice and abides the law, while taking in the interests and opinions of the people. He should be selected through state judicial elections, where citizens have the final say based purely on factors such as popularity, qualifications and character. After all, we are the ones who elected the president, just because he portrays best the way we view ideology, ethics and values. Furthermore, more than 95 percent of the nation's legal cases are decided by state or local courts. (Patterson 497). This involves most cases, from criminal law (from shoplifting to murder) to civil law, which are the primary causes of danger to society.(Patterson |

The Pre-Columbian Era
Cuauhtémoc, meaning "one that has descended like an eagle" was born February 23rd and died on February 28th,1525, at the age of twenty-three. Cuauhtémoc was the last leader during the arrival of Cortes. One thing that stood out to me about Cuauhtémoc was when the Professor Luna spoke about him September 9th in her lecture. She said that he was captured and his feet were to be burned. And to Cuauhtémoc's luck this did not affect him because he was accustomed to walking on fire and feeling the pain and the burning of the flames. Cuauhtémoc bones were found in Ixcateopan, where he was also born. Cuauhtémoc's life has already been a huge remembrance in the Mexican community. On his birthday there is a traditional celebration. On February 23rd every year there is a dance, that goes on the whole day in remembrance of him. There is also a ceremony called the Mali Nalco, which is a ceremony where young men that are coming of age. It stands for the |

Causes of Friction in Multicultural Relationships
It's normal for couples to have arguments for various reasons from time to time in their relationships. However some things can be bigger sources of problems than others. All relationships are different; however these causes can build friction between even the most committed people. . Many things can cause this friction in a multicultural relationship such as, different cultures, religious beliefs, and difference in age. The different cultures in a relationship can cause many problems between two people. For example, some cultures require the acceptance of family for marriage or have restriction on having children. As people work on challenging this kind of problems in a relationship, they will have to support each other to stay with an effort, even when it feels discouraging. People will have to resist the efforts of those who use divide-and-conquer techniques-putting one cultural group against another. For example, in |

Gender Roles - To Each Their Own
The definition of a man and woman is one of those things that everyone has a unique opinion on just like religious beliefs, how to raise a child, or how to run a country. It's hard to choose a concrete sentence that regulates what it is to be a man or woman (O'Kelley, 1986). Women are allowed to wear pants, but men are not allowed to wear dresses. There are so many double standards including gender that it is frustrating to talk about because everyone should be treated equally no matter their gender or sexual orientation (Sullivan, 2010). Personally, I think gender should be defined by the person being judged. If you want to be called a man but have female parts, go for it. And vice-versa, and everything in between. The culture I live in and I do not hold the same opinion on a lot of things, including gender role. I don't think a man should have to pay for dinner on the first date, just like I don't think a woman should have to drop out of college if she gets ma |
