Global East - Twin Globalization
Globalization is used in any and every context. It is used in international discourses both official and non-official, and in the context of the interdependency of economies and nations. The word 'globalization' has evolved over time, but it has assumed more prominence since the end of the cold war and rapid liberation of emerging economies. Since the whole process is about development and transformation the process of globalization has become the necessary consequence of the economic development and cultural development, which is the pursuit of most modern market economies leading to interconnectedness of most economies and nations. However even with all the research, case studies, and discussions about globalization, it still remains an "elusive concept without real-life examples capable of breathing shape, color, and sound into a vague term that continues to dominate the twenty- first century media landscape"(Steger 2). One can claim that the engine that drives |

Friedrich and German Romanticism
The period of German Romanticism broke the individualist and rationalistic thinking of the Autklarung, advancing aesthetic ideals that transcended reason and exalted art. The flourishing of this period can be characterized in numerous ways, one of which is through a glimpse in the life of German Romantic artists such as the famous landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich (see appendix 1). To a large extent, the content and abstraction of Friedrich's works mirror the Romanticist idealism in Germany during his time, as reflected in his compositions such as the allegorical oil paintings Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog (1818) and Stages of Life (1835) (see appendix 2 and 3). In these works, the artist took a great deal in transforming landscape paintings from objectivism to an intense and emotional depiction of man, nature and the metaphysical. Meanwhile, the dynamism of his life as an artist is as intense as his works of art. On one hand, he suffered from considerable criticisms and during |

Painting: "Madonna and Child Enthroned with Donors and Saints Dominic and Elizabeth of Hungary"
Gothic Art is considered as the combination of the painting, sculpture, architecture and music characteristic in the central Europe during the Middle ages. Firstly derived from Romanesque art, Gothic art has a great influence for centuries lasted from mid-12th century to 15th century. The topic of Madonna and Child is seen throughout the history of western art. It represents the stylistic innovations from late 13th and 14th century and reflects religious subject matter that actually continues to evolve for centuries. The arts of Madonna with her child Jesus are central icons for both the Catholic and Orthodox churches. These paintings permeate Christian art that no others can exceed. Besides Lippo Vanni, many of the most renowned painters and sculptors in the history of art have turned their skills toward the creation of Madonna images during Gothic and Renaissance period. These images feature similarities and differences from Lippo Vanni's. The picture Madonna and Child Enthrone |

Sonny's Blues
In many literary works, if not most, the narrator of the story sets the tone from the beginning of what the mood will be throughout the story. For example, in works such as "The Long Way Home", it was depicted from early in the story that the main character wasn't your typical woman and the rest of the narrative went on to explain such. Even the most popular book in the world, the Bible, informs of the structure of the reading with the first words in the text. This same theory falls true for the short story "Sonny's Blues" written by James Baldwin. Baldwin introduces the story with the narrator being informed of negative news regarding the supporting character, which as explained earlier sets the reader up for the image that will be portrayed of him throughout the rest of the short story. The short story "Sonny's Blues" is narrated by a character that remains unnamed throughout the entire story. The only reference of him to signify his |

Teen Assassin
Dear Diary, There still hasn't been a day that I haven't thought about ______ and what I had done to him. I don't really know if I'm a horrible person with a horrible job, or if I'm a good person stuck into a horrible job? I walk into the same bathroom everyday staring blankly at the same reflection for the past five years, trying to release the image of his eyes staring in horror as I took his life. "He was just a boy."I thought to myself and I was the one who had his blood on my hand five years ago. I looked back into the eyes of my reflection ashamed of what I had become. I ended this young boys life and for what exactly? Was the reason that his parents were evil so they had destined him for evil? Or was it because it was what "The Homicide Eliminators" told me to do? Sincerely, Andrea Baker I thought about him for awhile. "NO! STOP! PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!" the young boy said. Those words rang in my head like a fire alarm. As I took two steps forward he took one step |

Family and Divorce
Research has shown a rising divorce rate and reasons as to why this may be the case. Some of these reasons are women's independence, economic issues, infidelity, and finally role confusion. Divorce has negative effects on children especially in areas such as school work, behavior, social and cognitive development. Children are not affected the same. Boys and girls as well as the age of the child when the divorce occurs are factors that can determine how a child may be affected. Because divorce often leads to single parent homes, children must learn to adjust living with one parent. Overall, children are negatively affected before, during, and after the divorce. In recent decades everything from technology to the economy has changed drastically. Social changes include rising divorce rates and the emergence of new family configurations. According to Meyerhoff (n.d.), a doctor of education, "Families offer companionship, security, and a measure of protection against an often u |

Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer
Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer, written by Patrick Süskind, is a novel based in 18th century France that explores the concept that olfactory sense as sovereign over any other factor of life, and is the channel towards supremacy. The protagonist, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, possesses a superhuman olfactory sense, and goes through life gradually obtaining power via this medium. As such, he is discriminated from the remainder of humanity in the novel; this separation is heavily represented by religious and spiritual allusions. Süskind realizes the prevalence of Catholicism in the time setting he selected, and allows this to be relevant to the novel. In effect, the use of religious and spiritual imagery allows the reader to register Grenouille's differentiation from humanity, in terms of both power, and lack thereof. Such is accomplished via direct parallels between religion and scent, references to Christianity, particularly Satan, and a vast series of other spiritual belie |

Liberal Humanism in Literary Analysis
Liberal Humanism is a form of study that came before criticism. Liberal humanism is the traditional approach to English Studies. There are some aspects to liberal humanism that have been made into what s called the 'ten tenets'. They are invisible guidelines literary critics use when reading a text. It is said that "That they can only be brought to the surface by a conscious effort of will." (Barry, 16). Using James Joyce's "Eveline" to emphasize these tenets will show how Liberal Humanism is seen in literary works. The first tenet is that "good literature is of timeless significance; it somehow transcends the limitation and peculiarities of the age it is written in, and thereby speaks to what is constant in human nature." (Barry, 16). In other words, literature is timeless and speaks to what is constant in human nature, meaning that while some novels and short stories seem set in the current time period, it must still contain a &apos |

Kohl's and Effective Advertising
Did you know that the Kohl's department store we know and love today was once your modern supermarket? "Maxwell Kohl, who had previously operated traditional grocery stores, built his first supermarket in 1946, the first in what would become a southeastern Wisconsin chain known as Kohl's Food Stores. In 1962, he started his first department store, Kohl's Department Store, in Brookfield, Wisconsin. He positioned Kohl's between the higher-end department stores and the discounters, selling everything from candy to engine oil to sporting equipment" (Kohl's, 2013 ). "In 1972 the British-American Tobacco Company's US retail division, BATUS Inc., bought a controlling interest in Kohl's Corporation, which at the time operated 50 grocery stores, six department stores, three drug stores and three liquor stores. The Kohl family, led by Allen and Herbert Kohl, continued to manage the company" (Kohl's, 2013). Over the last 40 years Kohl's has become one |

The Jungle Book, Morals and Ethics
The story of "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling is a tale of a young man cub by the name of Mowgli- "the Frog", who is apart of an extremely atypical society. The story begins when a Panther who goes by Bagheera discovers an abandoned boat still with one helpless passenger; baby Mowgli. Bagheera then takes the child to the one place he deems fit, which was the wolf pack in the Indian Jungle. Ten years go by very quickly and Mowgli has grown into incredibly energetic and adventurous young boy. For the most part a human boy living among animals in the jungle was acceptable to most, except a tiger named Shere Khan. The wolf pack knows of Shere Khan's hatred for man and decides the best way to protect him is by sending him to the man village to live with his own kind. On his way to the village, Mowgli meets various animal characters that help support him and some who attempt to delude him. Ultimately, Mowgli must face Shere Khan as his last obstacle on he way to |

Social Control and Conscience
Social control is never perfect, and so many norms and people exist that there are always some people who violate some norms. In fact, Émile Durkheim (1895/1962), a founder of sociology discussed in, stressed that a society without deviance is impossible for at least two reasons. First, the collective conscience is never strong enough to prevent all rule breaking. Even in a "society of saints," such as a monastery, he said, rules will be broken and negative social reactions aroused. Second, because deviance serves several important functions for society, any given society "invents" deviance by defining certain behaviors as deviant and the people who commit them as deviants (Barkan, S) 2011. Deviance, however, is not the only reason someone could hurt someone they do not know and show no feeling in doing so. Knowing this gives a little understanding as to how a members of the general public can bring themselves to harm another individual and not feel any sense of wron |

Important Work Values
Deciding my current work-related values is an important step in growing up. I know that they will soon become the characteristics of my future occupation. While going through the list I thought about the ones that were most important to me, and chose the top five. Accomplishment, economic return, helping others, pleasure, and recognition are my most important work-related values. Each one is an active part of me and choosing them has made me feel more mature and independent. One of my important work values is accomplishment, knowing that I have done well. This value has actually always been important to me since I was a little girl. From something as little as folding all my clothes to reading more than one book during summer vacation. A pat on the back is something I gave myself often. Having this value has got me to do all my homework, strive higher than a 75, graduate high school, and get into my dream college of course. Accomplishment has become even more important to me because although I am the youngest of |

The Scarlet Letter: From Adultery to Able
"Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy" (Proverbs 23:13 NIV). Throughout The Scarlet Letter, the effects of sin on the physical and emotional part of the body are visible. This story deals with many themes, the most powerful being sin. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses Hester, Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, and Pearl experience to show the effect of sin in The Scarlet Letter. Although Hester's sin is the heart of the novel, in some ways she does not seem to suffer as many effects of sin as the other characters do. The Puritan community punished Hester by physically showing her sin through the letter A on her bosom. However, she seems to embrace her punishment, and does not allow the Puritans to affect her. The narrator states, "On the breast of her grown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the Letter A" (Hawthorne 82). While the other |

Poetry Analysis: Shiloh in Melville's Requiem
As the subtitle suggests, Herman Melville honors the dead in this "Requiem", both blue and gray, who fought at the Battle of Shiloh, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Melville writes a modernized poem for the time period and, both in tone and sentiment, Melville gives the fatally wounded the opportunity to overcome their malice. Americans all, they live as foe and die as friends: the schisms of civil war are healed in deaths which transform churchyard into graveyard. That the battlefield should have been a site of Christian worship emphasizes the appalling costs of this killing of brothers as well as the possibilities for its redress. Through an American perspective of the Civil War on the frontier, Melville exemplifies the cruelty of war through symbolism, structure, and literary technique and has managed to transform a painful experience into one that is peaceful. Although the symbolism of this poem addresses the brutality of war in general, the poem is stil |

Aging in Today's Society
Mark Twain once said, "Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Unfortunately, societies throughout the world let it matter. In today's culture, humans will go to extraordinary lengths to try and postpone the physical effects of aging. Age was once a word that society admired and respected, but modern day humanity has corrupted that viewpoint and has transformed age into something that human beings should delay and conceal. A celebrity is a perfect example of an individual in today's world that has a great degree of public fascination who does everything in their power to fight the results of aging. For example, in picture one, it shows what the celebrity would truly look like without all of the makeup and additives that are on her face. Due to her popular appeal, the need to mask all of blemishes on her face is a necessity and if she were to have no products on her face, her appearance would be characterized |

Abolition and Women's Rights
Up until the 20th century, women in American traditionally had fewer rights than men primarily due to gender ideologies. The early colonists lived under English common law. English common law restricted women's rights while setting gender norms to conduct behavior. The American Revolution challenged gender norms by raising women's political consciousness and adopting a sense of American womanhood. Industrialization created a rise in the middle class. The Cult of True Womanhood focused on feminine virtues that furthermore limited the role of women. Women found a voice in the abolition movement and feminism ideals began to appear sparking the women's rights movement. Women's development of gender consciousness, recognition of subordination, vision of an alternative future, and the development of an agenda for the improvement of their status led to the creation of the American women's rights movement. During the eighteenth century and nineteenth century, ideology of separate spheres des |

Social Learning Theories and Juvenile Delinquency
One of the major problems of youth today is the issue of juvenile delinquency in society. Murder, rape, motor vehicle theft, robbery, aggravated assault, larceny, arson, and burglary are acts of violence that are steadily rising due to juveniles taking part in committing these acts violence. As years continue to pass, there has been enormous concern of how parents, police, counselors, teachers, and friends feel that the ability to control or stop juvenile acts of violence is slowly slipping away over time and are desperately trying to alter behavioral patterns that continue into these dangerous ways of life. Before attempting to determine the cause for this specific kind of behavior, consideration has to be given to the area of location, background of an individual, family pattern, and life at home as these variables affect how a child is raised and how they react to violence. So, to get an understanding of why juveniles participate in violence and act the way they do, it is important |

The Legal Drinking Age
My contention is that legal drinking age should be remained at aged 18. And to begin, I'd like to start by asking questions: How many of you had drink, honestly say that you're a responsible drinker. And: What make you more responsible than the person sitting next to you? Is it because you're older or younger or is it because you understand the consequence of binge drinking. People usually say that an 18-year-old has less tolerance compared to a 21 year old. Although it might be true but tolerance doesn't come with age, it comes with realization of responsibility and in the real society there are people that more responsible at aged 16. My first argument is the teenagers should have their rights once they turn 18. And this is the opinion of Ms. Laschon, chief executive officer of Youth Affair Council of WA, she said that "Young people in Australia acquire many rights when they turn 18; right to vote, to serve in the armed forces, right to drive and they can also legally purchase alcohol". Therefore, once people |

Gender Determination in 19th Century Latin America
"To develop to a higher, better, or more advanced stage" is how progress is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. During the late 19th century, Latin America, in particular, was striving to do just what this definition states. From copying other countries' ideas to living more luxurious lives, the majority of Latin America was ready to progress and thrive as a whole. However, in opposition, a number of people resisted progress because they were content with the lives they lived and did not see a reason for the change. Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon by Jorge Amado is a prime example of progress in the 19th century. While reading the novel, the reader can see the resistance, as well as the push for progress, and understand how different sectors within a town in Latin America reacted to change. This was an exciting time in Latin America, due to a flourishing economy, technological advances, roads being built, newspapers being published, and much more. However, many people did not |

Theory of Mind
Theory of mind is awareness that other people have different thoughts and minds to you. When referring to theory of mind we look at how someone's ability to understand their mental states of desires, beliefs, thoughts, etc. When a child has developed their theory of mind they are able to understand others have different thoughts, can recognise what others are feeling and seeing. Children also begin to utilise their theory of mind in everyday life, such as a child stating they wanted to go outside, where they have used the mental state of knowing what they want. Theory of mind is of interest to early childhood, as we are not born with theory of mind we grow to develop it. Early childhood especially around the ages 3-5 is when most children develop their theory of mind, however if children are given opportunities earlier on about mental states they will develop their theory of mind earlier. Many research completed on theory of mind looks at how we begin to understand and utilise theory o |

The Moral Dilemma of Euthanasia
Every day we face countless choices that involve doing the right thing; however, the right thing to do isn't always the easiest thing to do. Each of these choices involves thousands of messages whirling inside our brain. In a split second our minds review the facts, explore our feelings, study consequences, compare the options against our beliefs and priorities, consider what others may think, and give the cue for action. Decisions happen so quickly but the consequences can last a lifetime and may affect others. That's why careful consideration is vital, but sometimes we do not have the time to consider the answers. A code of ethics/morals can help in determining right from wrong under these circumstances. They can determine the direction our lives will take as a result of such decisions, as my life was swept up in this moral/ethical dilemma. I made a choice as a young girl and the daughter of my mother, to take care of my mother when my father left, moreover because of my sense of |

Schooling Children without Summer Vacations
Year around schooling is becoming more popular across the country. There are many advantages and disadvantages of school systems that run for nine weeks, and then take a three week break. Both traditional and nontraditional learning centers keep the mandatory one hundred eighty days of classes set by our government. Every year the question comes up, is giving students three months of summer break a good idea? In my opinion it is not. I will explain why. According to the" California State department of Education", receiving three months break from school throughout the year in comparison with giving it consecutively would be more beneficial for students. "The year around calendar allows students to attend school nine weeks at a time, and a three week break in between". "Breaks being three weeks lon |

The BP Oil Spill Catastrophe
The oil spill which rapidly swept the nation with damaging effects for several months was an enormously controversial issue that appeared in media sources from coast to coast. In late April when the catastrophe occurred, the world was not at all ready for what was soon to come. Initially to stop the steady flow of oil from seeping into the Gulf lead to an excess of serious problems; specifically, in the areas which surrounded the site of the incident. Until the recent tragedy British Petroleum, better known as BP, presented themselves as a "good corporation"; however, due to the devastating events, the once good corporation took a huge hit. Chief Executive Officer, Tony Hayward primarily, was directed in the line of fire throughout the whole ordeal. Speculations of Hayward being entirely at fault were in fact made, but can the entire blame of such an unanticipated accident be single-handedly placed on one man? It was thought by many that after suffering such a misfortune, BP would like |

Ernesto "Che" Guevara: Terrorist or Freedom Fighter?
This paper will provide insight into the life of Argentinian born revolutionist Ernesto "Che" Guevara who was born in 1928. The purpose of exploring Ernesto "Che" Guevara's life throughout this paper is merely for the purpose of determining whether or not he was an internationalist freedom fighter or just considered another terrorist. Therefore, it will be important to define these terms to provide a better understanding of Che's beliefs, convictions, and accomplishments. While many may consider Che a freedom fighter, this paper will demonstrate that Che's beliefs and actions humanistic, that his actions were in fact aligned with those associated to terrorism (i.e. Osama Bin Laden etc.). Ernesto "Che" Guevara who was better known as "Che" was born in Rosario, Argentina, on June 14, 1928. Che suffered from a disabling form of asthma inspired him to study medicine and become a doctor.
