Polluting Planet Earth

Why is pollution taking place? For a long time humans have been carelessly polluting the planet on which they live. Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that causes adverse change. The three major places pollution occurs are in the water, air, and on land. Water pollution is one of the biggest problems the world is facing with tremendous impact to the life of the human race. Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies such as lakes, rivers, oceans, and groundwater's caused by human activities. One major cause of water pollution is oil spills. In March of 1989 at Prince William Sound in Alaska, the Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred. The drivers of the Exxon Valdez noticed icebergs in their planned route. Instead of trying to weave through the icebergs, they decided to go into another direction. While Exxon was on their new route, the oil tanker hit Bligh Reef in shallow land. The Exxon Valdez spilled approximately 10.

The United States and Factors of Poverty

What is poverty? Every day we are exposed to some nature of poverty. There is no one definition to define poverty because it can be in reference to anything. Generally, poverty is referenced as being extremely poor or lacking the general necessities required to live each day. Examples may include water, food, and shelter. Each view of poverty has its own opinion and explanation. Poverty affects all aspects of life, even the ones who are fortunate to have everything they need. Poverty is either blamed on the individual or the system, which we refer to as the government. A couple of things one should take into consideration when referring to poverty is the causes and effects of poverty, the types of poverty, and the people most affected by poverty. Although poverty is well overlooked, the less fortunate should be taken into consideration rather than overlooked or set apart as an outcast to society. There are two categories of poverty. The first category of poverty is case poverty. Case poverty is defined as something an individual does or lacks

The Poet William Blake

At the young age of ten William Blake entered a drawing school and studied at the school of the Royal Academy of Arts. When Blake was fourteen he then decided to try his hand at poetry. The contemporary world and the war that was going on led him to write about the religious, moral, and political opinions he had, which were expressed in his poems. Blake is most known for his "illuminating printing" where he wrote the text and also drew the illustration. If someone were to read one of Blake's poems without the pictures, they would miss something that was truly important. Since the mid-1920s Blake finally came into his own, both in poetry and painting, as one of the most dedicated, intellectually challenging, and astonishingly original artists" (Lynch and Stillinger). Blake wrote "From Songs of Innocence" and "From Songs of Experience", which parallel one another. "The state of purity and childlike perspectives, discussed in "Innocence", establishes Blake's ideal condition for humanity.

Abortion and the Right to Choose

This paper will be a discussion of the philosophical positions regarding the morality of abortion and the right to choose. Abortion is defined as the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, or resulting in the death of the fetus. There are two general positions regarding abortion, Pro-Choice and Pro-life. Those who maintain the Pro-Choice position are in favor of the legalization of abortion and believe a woman has the right to choose. Those who maintain the Pro-Life position are opposed to abortion as they believe the fetus is a full human being and is entitled to full human rights. This paper will be a defense of the Pro-Choice position that each woman is, and should be entitled to the right to choose what happens to her body and consequently her life. This discussion is important because of its relevance to modern society. The Pro-Life position, maintained by philosophers such as Aquinas and Margaret Olivia Little, maintains that the fetus has, from the moment of conception, the same moral status as an adult human being. This position emphasizes the fact that a fertilized ovum naturally develops into a ba

Are Marijuana Users Misunderstood?

Although marijuana has been proven to have many benefits in medicinal use, media portrayal of people who smoke weed has often been given a negative manner. The stoner community has had to live with these stereotypes of being lazy and losing all self-motivation based on the media's depiction. If this issue is not addressed thousands of people throughout America who smoke weed will be seen as dysfunctional members of society. In my research paper, I want to address the many problems this evokes and how it has little to do with an actual stoner. Marijuana users have been around for many centuries. Dating back to 2737 B.C when a Chinese pharmacologist by the name of Shen-Nung discovered its medicinal values. (Bloomquist 18). Since then the plant has played many roles, moving from China to India, then to all of Europe and slowly snaking its way to Mexico. Here, it was stated, "It was utilized in certain Aztec religious ceremonies. Montezuma II was known to partake of a strange p

"Deadly Unna?" by Phillip Gwynne, is a novel that is set in a sleepy coastal town, known as "the Port", in South Australia. It focuses on many tragic and disturbing events largely arising from racism between the white community and the nearby Aboriginal community. However out of these negative incidents and themes comes a message of hope and optimism for the future. The main character of this novel Gary Black, or "Blacky" as he is known, is involved in many of these traumatic events but through courage and strength of character manages to achieve a positive outcome for both himself and perhaps the community as a whole. The death of one of Gary's close friends, Dumby Red, is obviously a tragic part of the story. There is in the end however a postive outcome for both Gary and the grieving family of Dumby Red. Gary is gutted when he hears of his Aboriginal friend's death and is confronted with a choice whether to go to the funeral or not. Hi

The Downfall of the Tokugawa

From years 1603 to 1869, the country of Japan was under the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate. During this period of Japanese history the country suffer from a feudal military dictatorship under the rule of the shoguns of the Tokugawa family. The Feudal period in Japan, also known as the Edo period, was a time when the caste system was very firmly fixed and only the feudal lords and the samurai stood on top. Japan also became isolated because of foreign policies rejecting any offers from western nations to trade with the exception of the Dutch. Eventually due to the strict social orders and the exploitation of the peasant class by the government Japan became socially unstable. It was until the arrival of the United States naval ships led by Commodore Matthew Perry that Japan was forced to end its isolation from the western empires. This event created crisis within the country leading to the downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate. "Opposition forces in Japan used the humiliating intrusio

The Writ of Habeas Corpus

Habeas Corpus is a legal action which is sometimes called a writ and it says a person under arrest is to be brought before a judge to make sure that there is enough evidence to hold the person. If there isn't enough evidence then the prisoner must be released. Any prisoner or a legal person representing the prisoner can request Habeas Corpus. Habeas Corpus does have some limits. It is a guarantee against wrongly holding a prisoner but doesn't exactly protect a person's rights. The right to petition for the legal action has long been celebrated as the best safeguard of the liberty of a person. The writ of habeas corpus was issued by the English courts in the name of the monarch to control inferior courts and public authorities. rather than issuing the writ immediately and waiting for the return of the writ by the custodian, modern practice in England is for the original application to be followed by a hearing with both parties present to decide the legality of the dete

Conservation and Sustainability of Natural Resources

People consume natural resources faster than the planet can renew them. Conservation is a word, concept or a thought process that does not go through a person's mind when they are washing dishes, leaving the toaster plugged in, using paper, or throwing cans in the trash! Webster's Dictionary describes conservation as "a careful preservation and protection of something; especially: planned management of a natural resource to prevent exploitation, destruction, or neglect." Conservation is so important because we are running out of our world's most precious resources, such as water, energy, trees, wildlife, and minerals; sustainability is a great way you can help protect our planet for our future. There are three people that will or have gone done in world history for their acts in conservation. Al Gore, Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir. Today, Al Gore is one of our best known Conservationist, or as The Godfather of Green. He cares so much about this planet. He ev

The Benefits of Raising the Minimum Wage

Many people say, "The rich get richer while the poor get poorer." This quote is often said these days due to the economic downfall and crisis happening in the United States. One of the only ways to make due is by working relentlessly day in and day out. Today's minimum wage simply is not cutting it anymore, especially if you reside in the state of New Jersey. With the cost of living going up, it is safe to say that there must be a raise in minimum wage in order to keep the quality of life stable. However, not very many people agree with the raise in minimum wage being the resolution to any economic issues. In fact, increasing the minimum wage could possibly hurt us. New Jersey is by far one of the most expensive states in many aspects across the board and in any category. With many people living day-to-day and paycheck-to-paycheck, it is safe to say that the place minimum wage is right now is not working for most of New Jersey's residents. For example, let us take a look at a s

The Basics of Ethical Relativism

Ethical relativism is defined by The Encyclopedia Britannica as, "the doctrine that there are no absolute truths in ethics and that what is morally right or wrong varies from person to person or from society to society"("ethical relativism,"(04 Mar 2013). This is what I believe that author Lenn Goodman is talking about in his article, "Some Moral Minima." In the article he discusses several topics that should be judged just because they are simply wrong and should be wrong by anyone's standards. I agree with Goodman on the all the issues he discusses however I will only discuss a few such as slavery, genocide, terrorism, murder, rape, and incest. I agree with these issues because there is never a good reason to take away ones rights for the sake of gaining respect and wealth, kill for the sake of killing, or rape for the sake of sex. I agree with Goodman that these issues should be universally considered as wrong doings or acts of violence. He is

Hershey Food Corporation Financial Analysis

The Hershey Company seems like a good potential investment overall. Although it struggled in 2007, the recent increases in revenues and profit margin are promising. Hershey has always been a stable company, so it is very likely that it will continue to do well in the future. Combined with the fact that the industry is expected to grow over the next few years, Hershey appears to be a strong investment option with increasing net sales. The Hershey Company is the leading North American manufacturer of quality chocolate and non-chocolate confectionery grocery products. Hershey Foods dominates forty percent of the US chocolate market. Hershey sells products in a variety of packaged forms and markets under more than fifty different brand names. In addition to being the largest North American manufacturer of quality chocolate and sugar confectionery products, the Hershey Company has also begun to develop and deliver single-serve cookies, brownies and value-added snack nuts. Culture Shifts and the New "Normal"

In our society, appearance is very much linked to norms. Our country has very solid views on what is "normal" and "fashionable" for people to wear. What they wear also has the ability to show what social class they belong to or how they are trying to portray themselves. Robert Merton, in "The Normative Structure of Science" sets forth four sets of "institutional imperatives" that together "comprise the ethos of modern science": universalism, communism, disinterestedness, and organized skepticism. Merton says "The acceptance or rejection of a scientific claim should not depend upon the personal or social background of the person offering that claim." If the claim is that people who wear clothing to present themselves as either Gothic, or high class, this theory applies because it is only "different" or "deviant" in the eye of the person who does not dress the same way. Merton also states that "Claims should not be put forth solely to further one's interests or advance one's

Dysfunction and Childhood Sexual Abuse

Child sexual abuse is defined as the abuse of trust, power and authority that occurs through exposure of a child to sexual behavior and acts (Scott et al, 2011). Understanding the effects of sexual child abuse is critical for psychologist since knowledge of the collective symptoms depicted by adults who were child sexual abuse victims is useful in undertaking appropriate interventions and diagnosis among adult exhibiting pathological problems and symptoms and especially for those adults with histories of abuse. This paper provides an overview of the relationship between child abuse and various adult psychopathology manifestations and specifically touches on various topics including the psychosexual effects of sexual abuse, sexual abuse based on gender, development and social model, suicide, and so on. Injustice in America

Our nation is currently suffering from social, economical, as well as political injustice and its greatly impacting Americans of every social class. From the lower to the upper class and from the white to the blacks, we are all greatly affected by it. Many people can agree that injustice is unfair and morally wrong. There are many job occupations that injustice is legally prohibited such as police officers, doctors, judges, lawyers and basically every other available occupation. Discrimination against black people to government killings in third world countries, these social injustices have changed throughout the years. Economical injustice is a very a trending topic today and is becoming a key issue in our nation. People of the lower economic class are most commonly found affected by injustice. No one is doing anything to get rid of poverty, especially our government! Barbara Ehrenreich's main point in "Serving in Florida," is that once people become poor it is very difficul

The Experience and Content of Faith

Faith involves God's revelation – God's action (self-communication) in the dynamic of faith.1 There is both an experience of faith, as well as a content of faith. Kelly refers to the experience of faith as fides qua (the [subjective] faith by which we believe) and the content of faith as fides quae (the [objective] faith that is believed).2 This short essay describes these two dimensions of faith – experience and content – and shows why Catholic theology emphasizes their unity. In describing the experience of faith, a defining characteristic is that it is "a response to God's desire to be known by human beings"3 in human experience. The capacity to experience faith, then, is granted supernaturally by God – "it is the gif

Saying "No" to Alcohol

"The alcohol makes gentleman be rascal, saints be villains." It is the one of most representative opinion said by the famous Chinese thinkers, Confucius. I always doubted if the opinion is right when I was young, because I saw my uncle drinks everyday for his business. Every night he came back home and start a sponsor pitch about he negotiated a big deal, again, in the booze. Chinese people always use alcohol to break the down barriers between people, the booze is most important social finesse. Every time he talked about his success in a very exciting and drunk tone, we are all infected by his happy expression. It seems like alcohol is just like a sward, which helps my uncle to strike at the hedge and get success. All things seems be perfect until the last year, when my uncle has been diagnosed gastrointestinal cancer. All his success seems worthless comparing with his health. When I saw the man who I admired in my childhood just lying in the sickbed weakly, and could not giv

Contrast of Women in Tess of the D'Ubervilles and The Wife of Bath's Prologue

The portrayal of Thomas Hardy's character Tess in his work Tess of the D'Ubervilles and Geoffrey Chaucer's character of Alisoun in his work The Wife of Bath's Prologue is such that both women are seen by society at the given time in history as rebellious, discontent, and badly behaved . Though these portrayals are the result of the cultural values held at said time, they have been immensely influenced by the ideas that the authors respectively had of women as well as the lens of context that each character is viewed through. The belief that these two characters 'behave badly' is highlighted through double standards in the novels' respective societies as well as pristine character representation that Chaucer and Hardy employ. Although the mindset in which women are viewed has changed drastically over the years, the attitudes that men in the Victorian Era had towards women greatly influenced the representation of Tess that Hardy gives to us in his book. Throughout the Victorian Era,

Effects of Sex in the Media on Adolescents

Everywhere we go the media is always around us. Through television, radio, internet, movies, video games; we cannot escape media's influence. The media is full of sexual images and themes that can be unhealthy for a growing mind to view. The prevalence of overtly sexual content in the media influences teenagers to be promiscuous. The abundance of sexual material in the media is influencing teenagers to make unhealthy choices about sex. Because sexual themes can be found in all forms of media, it is difficult for teenagers not to be subjected to it. Richard Jackson and Christopher Barlett state, "[aAdolescents] . . . learn about sex from . . . media outlets such as movies, television, magazines, song lyrics, videos and the internet" (1). Allyssa Harris adds, "[The] media are among the primary educators for adolescents about sexuality and sexual behavior" (235). When teenagers are exposed to sexual themes in popular media, it alters their way of thinking in regards to sex. David M

Teen Pregnancy and Parenting

Every year around 750,000 teenagers, between the ages of 15 and 18, will get pregnant. Why is that such a great dilemma? Back in the day, it seemed socially acceptable to be married at the age of 14. Usually that meant they started having kids when they were between the ages 15-18. They made good parents even though they were young. Nowadays though, some teenagers seem to be much more free which makes is difficult for people to see that teens can become good parents. They might think that the teen is irresponsible and careless. Despite that most people say that teenagers cannot make good parents because they are irresponsible, plenty of other people believe that they can by being responsible and prepared. Why would people think that teenagers can't be good parents and raise a child? There are plenty of reasons and many people think that they cannot. First off, they are just young. Most of the time, they haven't finished school and end up having the baby before they graduate and now have to dr

Theater: Cry, The Beloved Country

The play based on the book Cry, the Beloved Country was created by Kurt Weill a German as the composer and an American Maxwell Anderson as a lyricist. They named the play Lost in the Stars and Anderson found the order of activities in the book to be interesting and opted to bring the Myth of Ulysses into it. Anderson wrote to Paton before starting on the play to get the permission to use his work. Anderson explains in the letter that "the khumalo story took such hold on me that I decided I'd like to try to arrange it for the stage" (Avery 1977:221).Alan Paton on getting the request got interested and opted to help in the play by providing some African music that could be used in the casting an offer that was turned downed since Weill wanted to write an American opera based on an American popular song. This led to reduced correspondence between Paton and Weill and Anderson. Paton was invited to meet the creators and cast of Lost in the stars and watch a rehearsal of the play which he sa

Criticizing Kant's Argument for Purposeful Reason

In the preface of Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, Immanuel Kant declares that all moral philosophy rests entirely on its pure parts. With this premise, an acknowledgment that he is unconcerned with a teleological approach to morality, Kant tethers the moral philosophy he is about to erect. I will begin by outlining what Kant means when he states that moral philosophy is based in something pure by examining what the concept of purity signifies in terms of morality and why Kant argues on its behalf. From there I will briefly summarize the form of moral philosophy Kant believes will arise from this pure grounding, the categorical imperative. Through a critical examination of the role of reason and the concept of purpose in linking the realm of human experience and the pure metaphysics of morals, I will argue that Kant's moral philosophy lacks a motivator for human participation and is subsequently unlikely to be a practical philosophy. For Kant, moral philosophy is a type of r

My Father's Genealogy

The history and genealogy of my family on my father's side is difficult to write. Not because it is complicated or shrouded in mystery or intrigue, but because there is no written history of it; no documents, no diaries, no letters. What little exists has been passed down verbally from my Dad's grandparents, to his parents, to him and now to me. There are neither records nor communication before my great-grandparent's birth in the very first decade of the 20th century. I asked my Dad how that could be so? He answered somewhat apologetically and almost with embarrassment. He said, "I think it was really three things. They lived through some very trying and tragic times; WWI, WWII, the Holocaust, and after the Second World War, the annexation and occupation by the communist U.S.S.R. Secondly, what little documentation existed was destroyed or lost during or after the trauma of the wars. But most of all, I think that my parents and grandpare

James Joyce's 'The Dead'

In the story, "The Dead", by James Joyce we read about a character "Gabriel" that is attending his Aunt Kate's and Aunt Julia's annual Christmas dance along with his wife Gretta. There were many other attendees at this annual dance, other members of the family, old friends of family and along with additional acquaintances. Music of years past entertained the guests, "The Lass of Aughrim" was the key turning point of the story as Gretta listens and relives memories of the past. The night was filled of dancing, eating and visiting before the guests headed home on a snowy night. Gabriel is a well educated man and sees himself somewhat above the guests that are in attendance with him. We see this when the James Joyce says, "He would only makes himself ridiculous by quoting poetry to them which they could not understand". He is a displaced man who has less self confidence in himself than he leads others to believe. Gabriel is a d
