Various Acts of the American Revolution
Despite the Seven Years' War, Britain still engaged full supremacy over the American colonies. However, they now saw the colonies as fodder to feed the raging debts of the country. The crown's desire for money for the debts was viewed by Britain as reasonable, while it fueled the fire known as a revolution that was stirring up in the hearts of the colonists. This would create a new sense of American political identity and would eventually lead to the American Revolution. Eventually, Britain would soon come to regret marking the spirited colonists as inferior. There were ideas that would spark the flame of revolution much before the word revolution was even spoken of. Republicanism, an idea where the citizens gave up their private needs to the common good, became quite a popular idea, as well as the idea of a strong, central, government. The ideas were just harmless thoughts at the time; it was the actions of the British government that would turn them into dangerous philosophies. Mer |

Educating Hearts and Minds
"Educating Hearts and Minds" was replaced by "True to You" last year at Archbishop Watterson High School. The former slogan represented the main goal of Watterson High, to educate the hearts of students through Holy Cross values and to educate the minds of students to a level that is needed for a successful college career. This is the product that Watterson attempts to produce. As a Catholic high school, Watterson's purpose is to both prepare students for college and to help create a foundation of faith in the student's life. The four year process of math, English, science, and religion classes are supposed to produce this product. Like Watterson, many other high schools across the nation, whether public, private, or religious, have similar goals. All high schools attempt to produce a certain type of product, one that is well rounded and ready for the world. While different to some degree in each school, the process to educate students and create the desir |

Communicative Language Teaching: Challenges for a Developing Country
Over the last decade many countries have experienced a surge in demand for English as a foreign language. As developing countries have begun to open to the world, the demand for English has soared. Foreign language teaching in many developing countries has played an important role in education, as well as in the development of the country. In particular, English has been in the leading position with the highest number of students in Vietnam. Together with the development of language, language teaching methodology has also developed a lot to ensure the effectiveness of teaching and learning. This development is in fact the import of modern foreign language teaching approach used in developed contexts, usually called communicative language teaching (CLT). Using the implementation of CLT in the Vietnamese context is really necessary but the effectiveness also must be taken into account. The essay argues that the implementation of CLT in the Vietnamese context faces challenges and constrai |

Islam Faith Around the World
The word Islam means submission to God. The religion of Islam can be found throughout the world. The people who follow the Islamic faith are known as Muslims. Islam was developed in the Middle East through the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Muslims believe that Allah is the creator and sustainer of the world. The holy book of the Islamic faith is called the Quran. The Quran contains teachings of the Prophet Muhammad that were given to him by Allah (Islam, n.d.). Muslims believe that Allah is the one true God and there is no God but Him. The Muslims believe that only those who believe in Allah can enter into heaven. The only sure way to enter heaven is if a Muslim dies in a Sihad or holy war. This explains why so many Muslims are willing to give their lives in terrorism acts (Let Us Reason Ministries Islam, 2009). Muslims believe that each person is born pure and given the power to choose between right and wrong. A mosque is the holy place of worship for the Islamic fait |

The Definition of Conflict
What is the definition of conflict? Everyone I know has been in a type of conflict at one point in their lives but does anyone really have a definition for it. Based on my own life experience, my definition of conflict is a situation of struggle or contest between two or more individuals with opposing needs, ideas, beliefs, values, or goals. In 2004, I was working in a small-size architectural office with about 10 staff members including the principal of the company. The staff comprised of five architects, four architectural technologists and one receptionist. Having just graduated from my architectural studies at Algonquin College with a diploma in Architectural Technology I was still new to the industry and knew that my role in an architectural office would be to develop design plans and work alongside with a licensed architect. I was 25 years old at the time and was working among a mature group for which I was looking for leadership and a role model as I started my career. Ther |

The History of Air Conditioning
A brief history of heating and cooling gives you an appreciation of the depth and importance this industry has played in the evolution of society. It will also dispel the popular myth that central heating, central air conditioning, and refrigeration are recent developments. (Carter Stanfield, 2010) The history of air conditioning goes way back before this civilization even existed. Thousands years ago, ancient Egyptians had methods or cooling the air temperature. The Romans also had a few methods that they used. As for the civilized world, in the early 1900 the journey began where air conditions first introduced by Dr. Willis Carrier. There are numerous of companies that brand air condition systems in a various different forms. In today's modern world the air condition industry is one of the biggest industries. The Purpose of the Three Witches in Macbeth
Macbeth is a symbolic story of how people can be easily influenced. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth meets the three witches and hears about his prophecy from them which he will become the next King of Scotland. These witches are important characters to develop the story. Every time when Macbeth needed them, he received prophecies from them. These prophecies affect Macbeth and reveal his evil personality. As revealed in the play, the purposes of the three witches in the play are to foreshadow, advance the plot, and show the human weakness. One of the purposes of the witches in the play is to set allusions. In the beginning of act one scene one, the three witches plan? to meet at the open field to see Macbeth after the battle is over. As they promised, they wait for Macbeth and Banquo to return from the battlefield. When they faced each other, the third witch said, "All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter"(Macbeth 1.3. 51) to Macbeth. Then the first witch tells Banquo that, "Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none/ |

The Phoenix Effect - The Rise of Brown America
"Resistance is futile" is the statement first exclaimed by the alien race called the Borg in the Gene Roddenberry long running television series Star Trek. "Why do you resist? Asked the Borg commander, Ryker replies "I like my species the way it is"! Borg commander counters with, "We only wish to raise quality of life for all species". In the essay, "How to Tame a Wild Tongue," by Gloria Anzaldua the above description of assimilation was avoided by the borderland Hispanic Americans called Chicanos. Assimilation, with loss of ethnic identity and language, is an unfortunate by-product of the price to be called an American. Anzaldua's essay is arguing for the ways in which identity is intertwined with the way we speak and for the ways people can be made to feel ashamed of their own tongues. (Anzaldua pg.33). The Chicanos were able to evolve and retain their cultural identity and ethnicity by creating a border dialect or language (a Patois) called Pachuco. |

When Women Have The Power
If men are not around what are women to do? World War II marked a significant turn for women in society as women began to enter the workforce in large numbers, filling and expanding the void left by the many men who went to fight in Europe's epic world war. Eudora Welty's short story, "Petrified Man," contradicts the typical thought surrounding the gender roles and the social norms of Southern Americans. In the story women are the controllers of the household, and men are weak inactive figures, as they do nothing. Leota and Mrs. Pike, two strong female characters in "Petrified Man" have steady jobs and are the economic supporters of the family, while Fred and Mr. Pike are unemployed and live at home. Although Mr. Fletcher is employed, he takes a subordinate role in his marriage as Mrs. Fletcher takes the reins and does as she pleases. The Petrified Man is even an inactive figure, hiding from the police and acting as if he is a man that is made of stone. Through the actions and traits |

Foundations of Phsychology
Introduction Psychology research and studies have come a long way in learning more how the human brain affects the way we think, learn, and behave throughout the stages of life. Psychology first sparked a huge interest for further experiments and research when people were unable to recall memories that were tied to the response rendered following severe head trauma. According to (Kowalski & Westen, 2011) "Humans are complex creatures whose psychological experience lies at the intersection of biology and culture." In order to fully understand the brain and what makes people think, act, and behave in certain ways, we must learn and understand the schools of thought, the four perspectives, and who the major theorists were in each. Schools of Thought (Structuralism and Functionalism) William Wundt known as the "father of psychology" believed that there was more to psychology than just experiments, but rather a person's religion and language were also essential to un |

Letter of Intent: MBA Program
Dear Marlys: After carefully considering ways to advance my career, I have made the decision to apply to the University of Connecticut's part-time MBA program with the hopes of obtaining my master's degree in a few years. I am certain in my decision to make UConn my school of choice and see this as being an ideal opportunity to improve upon my existing knowledge and skills, particularly in finance. I firmly believe that receiving an MBA would be a personally rewarding experience and an invaluable addition to my resume. I am also confident that I possess the necessary experience and determination to complete the program, and that a master's degree would be a significant step in moving towards achieving my career goals. I have always placed an extremely high value on my education, so receiving an MBA would be something I would take great pride in. I very much enjoyed my time as an undergraduate student at UConn, both at the Storrs and Stamford campuses, and would feel privileged if given the opportunity to return as a graduate student. I am excited that UConn offers a part-time MBA program at the Stamford campus that is in close proximity to my home and f |

The Reluctant Fundamentalist - Change of Setting and Locale
If Mohsin Hamid's " The Reluctant Fundamentalist" was set in a time before the events on September 11th, 2001 and in a different locale, the meaning of the book and the impact it has on readers would be completely altered. Changez wouldn't be the same character and the story would perhaps center more around his relationship and experiences with Erica. Post 9/11, he is viewed by his co-workers in a new way, he is forced to endure extra security measures in airports and he is gawked at on the street by random strangers. All these occurrences shape who he is and the conversation he is having with the American in Lahore and thus change the book entirely. Changez starts out as a young man graduated from P |

Extending the School Year
There have been many discussions about whether or not the academic school year should be extended for school students. Some think it will better prepare them for college; and others think that it won't make a difference if the school year is extended. The school year shouldn't be dragged on any longer than it already is. There are many points that lead to the conclusion why the academic school year should not be extended, such as, more stress on the student, the financial issues with the schools. The academic year should not be longer than what it already is because it would bring on a great deal of stress for the school student than what they already have. College school is already too much for students right now. When teachers go through their studies, they rush through them to try to complete the textbooks. I don't think it has to do with completing the texts as much as it should have to do with helping the student learn. Children under utilize long summer months. During this time children have little to do but spend countless hours watching television, roaming the streets, and hanging out on sidewalks seeking out entertainm |

Analyses of Chickamauga
Chickamauga is short story by Ambrose Bierce that takes place in 1863 during the American Civil War. It is an anti-war narrative that also speaks to the evolution of humans in battle. A young child, the son of a veteran is the central character. Having grown up around war and being born of a soldier the child shows insensitivity to wounded men that few could understand. Not only insensitive to the setting, the child makes a game of the situation at hand. At the end of this short story, both the reader and the child are shown the true gravity of this tale. On an apparent typical afternoon, in the setting of this story, a young child wanders from his home playing games. After being frighten by a rabbit the child takes a nap and wakes to what seems a dream, to the reader unfamiliar with the back drop of this story. In the goriest detail the child happens upon what he thinks are animals. Shortly after, it becomes evident these "animals" are retreating, wounded soldiers. Both desens |

Sex & Divinity
Sex and its impact on humanity's relationship with the divine is a concept that cultures and philosophies around the world have struggled with for centuries. Eros is "the drive of life, love, creativity and sexuality, self-satisfaction, and species preservation" (Easton). In The Epic of Gilgamesh, translated by Benjamin R. Foster, and The Bhagavad-Gita, translated by Barbara Stoler Miller, the notion of eros is complex and multi-layered. Gilgamesh exults in the connection to the divine through this life drive while The Bhagavad-Gita presents sexual denial as a stepping stone on the path to brahman - "the supreme existence or absolute reality, the font of all things" ("brahman"). In studying both texts, we see that the consideration of eros is necessary for individuals to find and define their connection with the gods. The Epic of Gilgamesh posits that sexual union between individuals is sacred and enlightening. Sex provides a f |

The Skokie Incident started in the village of Skokie when the National Socialist Party of America wanted to march in Skokie. Skokie is a village with a many residents being Holocaust survivors and a larger number being Jewish. Clearly the holocaust Survivors and fellow citizens of the city were outraged and cried against it. Threats to Homeland Security
The United States has always faced threats from abroad, but also increasingly from within. In the 21st century, new threats have been introduced due to technological, biological, and chemical advances. These new concerns compromise the security of our nation, while the threats of classic warfare that have existed in the past still exist. The "War on Terror" has made terrorists abroad seek new ways to harm our country. Besides the fear of international terrorists, the threat from within in country from anarchists or rebels is an equally important concern. Our country has two major fronts of concern, the domestic threat, and the growing international one. Although the "War on Terrorism" focused on threats from abroad, many of the new threats to our country lie within our own borders. One form of domestic terrorism is Lone Wolf terrorism. This form occurs when an individual believes strongly in a certain cause and is willing to inflict violence on his own country. Th |

We are What We Wear
She walks into the room, head held high: confident. Her long, blond hair is flowing past her shoulders like a golden fire. Her lip gloss is shimmering with every step as she finally takes a seat. Unfortunately, from the male perspective, her beauty wasn't the first thing he noticed about her. Her clothing spoke volumes; her low-cut shirt and short shorts sent signals off in his mind that he could not control. What is this girl really like? She is a truly innocent girl who thought nothing about the message that her clothes would send, how the opposite sex would view it, or how it would make her feel about herself. Over the last few decades, the style for the ladies was to show their stomach. While the times have changed, so have the styles; |

Consumerism in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
In the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Philip K. Dick explores the recurring idea of entropy-a concept which describes everything as moving towards disorder and energy as being perpetually lost and wasted. This idea of constant disorder in emotional, societal, and metaphysical aspects permeates throughout the story. It is represented by consumerist characters who readily purchase commodities as well as by "kipple," which serves as a symbol for wasted goods. Throughout his novel, Dick notes how entropy is a continuous, and unstoppable procedure and suggests that humans' consumerism is a futile attempt to fight it. Dick employs the mood organ to suggest that attempts at reducing disorder through artificial means leads to further chaos and bedlam. Dick introduces the protagonist of the story, Rick Deckard, and his wife, Iran, and through the dialogue, he immediately portrays their relationship as unconventional and broken. Iran constantly berates Rick, calling |

The Effect of Video Games on the American Educational System
The American educational system has been hindered by video games. If you look around you, you will realize that video games are everywhere. From iPod's, to smart phones, televisions, to even some of our printers now have games. Our generation is called the "Joystick Generation", and for good reason too. Everyone is plugged in and no one more so than America's youth. To put the impact of the "Joystick Generation" into perspective, take into account that software sales spiked twenty-eight percent last year to 9.5 billion. An average of nine games were sold every second according to the Entertainment Software Association. By the time the average adolescent turns 21, he or she will have spent 10,000 hours playing video games (Prensky page). This is about the same amount of time necessary to fully master a sport, musical instrument, or area of professional expertise (Ericsson pg.1). Given these statements, it is evident that video-games are a large aspect |

Death Row and Capital Punishment
Introduction It has been more than 50 years since the last person in Canada was executed, but a recent public opinion poll advocates that Canadians are becoming more supportive of the return to capital punishment. The ongoing debate even suggested that murderers should be given a rope to hang themselves while still in prison. In 2011, more conservatives were likely to view the death penalty as appropriate sometimes, as the liberals were opposed to its return in general. NDP supporters were equally divided. The United States and Britain also found that the majority of its people supported the return of the death penalty. This is definitely influencing Canada and its opinion on the matter. In this essay I will review different opinions on the notion of capital punishment as it is still to this day a very controversial matter. The history of the death penalty will be examined with the introduction of Ronald Smith, Arthur Lucas and Ronald Turpin. These three are key factors in the develop |

The Purpose of Judicial Review
What is Judicial Review? It is when the High court has to come in and review a decision that was made by the legislative or the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. It is also an option when the State courts make a ruling and it is challenged by the defendant, to seek if their ruling was made by the guidelines of the Constitution of the United States. To further analyze a Judicial Review, it is the Supreme Court of the United State, whom by the founding fathers of this country wrote the Constitution of the United States. At the time of the signing of the Constitution it did give the power to the Justices of the court to decide whether laws line up with the Constitution or they don't. It wasn't until the 1800's that this power was granted to the Courts to in other words become the watch dogs of this country in order to make sure that we the people have and enjoy the protections granted to us by the Constitution of the United States. Acetaminophen Lab
Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to use our techniques that we have learned so far in lab in order to synthesize acetaminophen from p-aminophenol and acetic anhydride. This lab was also intended to teach us how to isolate and recrystallize our compound in order to get rid of as much impurities as possible and check the purity using the melting points. Lastly, this lab helped us continue to use thin-layer chromatography in order to compare our compound to similar compounds that can be found on the shelf in order to find the active ingredients in the different analgesics. Part A. Synthesis of Acetaminophen In order to start the synthesis of acetaminophen I did an acid-base reaction by adding concentrated hydrochloric acid to p-aminophenol. The p-aminophenol was then mixed with some charcoal, turning the mixture black, and then filtrated out by gravity. After this I used a buffer solution of sodium acetate to mix with the p-aminophenol and then immediately added 2 mL of acetic anhy |

Jealousy and Personality Differences: Key Issues in Relationships.
Many would think that the secure relationship between a man and woman which occurs through love is an unbreakable bond formed through friendship and trust. However, the notion that nothing can come in the way of love have been disproven by research. A study from the late 1970's shows a key issue in many, if not all heterosexual relationships and this issue is that of jealousy (Jaremko & Lindsey, 1979). When came the 21st century, more research in to this topic of jealousy issues has been done and so, according to Dijkstra & Barelds (2008), the feelings of jealousy are experienced in response to threat or the actual loss of a valued, mostly sexual partner of the opposite sex, due to an actual or imagined rival who has taken a fancy for one's partner's attention. The various types of jealousy, results of various studies which show interpersonal and interpersonal phenomenon, the various personality traits which correlate with the different types of jealousy and finally sugg |
