Overview: As You Like It

Shakespeare explores the notion of romantic love in order to demonstrate that belonging in a relationship is a difficult process which ultimately leads to acceptance and fulfilment. The play's comedic structure allows characters to be removed from their world of corruption to a pastoral setting, where an absence of a social and political hierarchy facilitates their passage to finding a sense of belonging. Rosalind and Celia's exile from the court begins this process as they "go in content to liberty and not to banishment". The rhyming couplet places emphasis on 'content' and 'not banishment', foreshadowing that the acceptance of their situation will lead to an easier passage to finding fulfillment. The pastoral setting of the Fo

Criminology Research Paper

According to The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, human sex trafficking, not far behind the illegal drug-trade, has become the second fastest increasing criminal industry in today's world. This type of slavery has been traced back to the ancient Mesopotamian and Mediterranean civilizations and has continued to grow. What is human sex trafficking? Commonly referred to as "modern-day slavery," it's the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act. This horrific yet ever-increasing issue is one that desperately needs to end quickly, since each day thousands of innocent children around the world are losing their freedom to this barbaric lifestyle. First, I'll start with some statistics. In an article written by Initiative against Sexual Trafficking, it is estimated that somewhere between 700,000 and four million women, children and men are trafficked each year, an

Zombies and Human Nature in "World War Z"

I am going to be straightforward as I can be, I do not like zombies. Never have, never will. Therefore, I struggled reading "World War Z." I tried to have an open mind, but the documentary style isn't interesting to me either. I know this is all a matter of taste, and I am probably in the minority. I've never been one to follow the crowd, so I'm not about to jump on the zombie bandwagon just because everybody else has. In "World War Z," though, the zombies were not the only monsters. Humans do monstrous things as well when cornered. Zombies bore me. That is the simplest way to sum up my dislike for them. I like my monsters to have a bit of intellect. With zombies, you don't get even a flicker. You can't even say they have pure animal instinct. Animals are more intelligent by leagues! I did not like Rawhead, but I'd take him over a zombie any day. The slow moving feature and human flesh- eating penchant does not do it for me, and that's really all any zombie

A Discussion of the Film, "Harold and Maude"

"Harold and Maude," based on a screenplay written by Colin Higgins, is a 1971 American dark comedy film directed by Hal Ashby. It is ranked number 45 on the American Film Institute's list of "100 Funniest Movies Of All Time." The film conveys some of the problems of society through a young man, Harold. The film's doomed outlook focuses upon the alienated youth of the time, which stands in stark contrast to the prevailing optimistic images portrayed at the time. This hard-won optimism was the perogative of those who endured the horrors of the early 20th century, but "Harold and Maude" shows that even in that seeminly rosy, peaceful period, there is "trouble in paradise." Although the film's content is largely dark, the film does present a relationship that enters Harold's life and that helps him to realize some positive changes. The relationship, however, is considered outside of the socially acceptable mainstream. That question it leaves is one only the audience can answer: will t

Pollution in Vietnam

Nowadays, the environment has been contaminated. Pollution is a big problem in any country. The environmental pollution is alarming in Vietnam. "Vietnam is ranked 79th -- the lower part in the middle group. But on specific detailed criteria, Vietnam displayed even worse performance, including air quality with effects on human health, water, and environmental burden of disease" (Tuoi Tre). The causes of pollution are many, but the three main ones are lack of education concerning environmental protection; concern with making a profits therefore, they disregard the consequences and, there are no laws strong enough to prevent any company or person who pollutes the environment . The biggest cause of pollution is human consciousness not to protect the environment especially among young people. Many people think that what they do is too small; they are not really harming the environment. Some others believe that environmental protection is the responsibility of the state and the government. In developed countries, people are educated about protecting the environment a

The Slave Trade Abolishment

Up until the 1st May 1807, the Slave Trade had been an important source of income for the British Empire. Britain had relied on the Triangular Trade since 1662 and benefited in the centuries that followed until in May 1807, Parliament passed the Abolition of the Slave Trade Bill in the House of Laws by 283 to 16. There were four main reasons as to why the slave trade was abolished; these reasons fell under one of these factors: the work of individuals; the work of groups; economics and fear. This essay will discuss the above categories and make a judge which one was the main contributor to the abolition of the slave trade in Britain. To begin with, the first factor this essay will explore is the work of individuals. The work of individuals certainly contributed to the abolition of the slave trade and the types of individuals varied from former slaves to Members of Parliament. John Newton, a former captain of a slave ship, gave evidence and wrote diary entries about the horrible and

The Profession of Teaching Special Education

I am interested in becoming a special education social skills worker. I have worked with kids who have autism as a volunteer at my high school and at a horseback riding center exclusively for individuals who have special needs. Autism is a severe developmental disorder, which if left unchecked, can usually progress to developmental disabilities at a young age. The causes of this disorder are largely unknown. It includes genetic and environmental factors. Studies shown show that symptoms may be present from birth, or appear after two or more years of apparently normal development, (Jeffery Gettelman Par. 2). I also have a brother who has autism, cerebral palsy, and is developmentally delayed. Growing up with him has given me the desire to help special needs students to reach their full potential. I have learned that with wanting to teach in this field you must have patience, and have a way in communicating with kids who

Being a Professional Nurse

A professional nurse is one who puts the needs and importance of patient care above all others. The professional should exert a positive public image considering the public is where services are directed to. A professional appearance is important for making first impressions on patients and other coworkers. The first impression is always of utmost importance and plays a major role in gaining a patient's respect and trust. Once the nurse has began establishing a relationship with their patient, they must be careful to not pass or show any judgment on a patient's decisions, beliefs, values, or culture. The professional nurse should demonstrate sensitivity to diverse cultural needs and ethnic backgrounds. Having an open mind is always necessary when dealing with such a wide array of people in the public as a nurse would be. Because healthcare is a continually expanding field, a professional nurse should be willing to stay up to date with continuing education or seminars, lear

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

What is the value of beauty in today's society? What about youth? Are these two somehow related to power and wealth? Society carries a great influence in the decisions of the majority, as it dictates what is "normal", "beautiful", and "taboo." It places wealth and beauty up on a pedestal, allowing them to define the self. People are consumed by the aesthetic aspects of life and allow this infatuation to take a handle on their actions, steering them into dealings with drugs, betrayal, and even murder. Beauty and youth become excuses for the "privileged" to do as they please without major consequences. To better understand the connection between beauty and wealth, the definition of beauty, according to its environment and context, should be addressed. The cliche "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" nearly upholds to the standards of working fashion models in the industry today. Across the board, the ones considered beautiful by the med

The Cost of Child Support

Child support to me is a great tool that can be used against a dead beat parent or somebody that just keeps having kids regardless of the after affect. It can help the caring and more responsible party care for their offspring; however, there are many parents who take advantage of this free money and use it for their own benefit. I have two boys, a five year old and three year old. I have given them everything a father could give to them. I provide a safe warm house, food on the table and clean clothes. I bath them and make them brush their teeth daily. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday I get my five year old on the bus and my three year old to preschool. I ensure that every homework or project they bring home gets done and gets done right. I read books to them every night to help their brains develop properly. Every night I have them: they get a bath, their teeth brushed, their ears cleaned, and then of course tucked into their bed watching Wow Wow Wubzy. I take really goo

Endangered Fetuses

When I think of outside forces effecting a growing fetus I automatically think of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, these environmental agents that can cause damage are known as teratogens. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is the all encompassing diagnoses that includes, fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), partial fetal alcohol syndrome (p-FAS), and alcohol related neuro-developmental disorder (ARND). Prenatal alcohol exposure can have serious and permanent adverse effects on children. The extent and severity of a child' s condition depends on several factors, such as how much alcohol the pregnant mother consumed and how often and at what point during her pregnancy she drank. Usually with heavy drinking the most serious outcome fetal alcohol syndrome arises. This is characterized by 3 main points, slow physical growth, a distinctive pattern of abnormal facial features and central nervous system disorders. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome effects the entire growth process for babies because the brain is in dev

What I Learned at Men's Wearhouse

Only months after I turned 16, I was hired by a major retail-clothing store. My work experiences at Men's Wearhouse have taught me a wide variety of unexpected lessons, and have instilled in me, many ideals that I will carry with me throughout my life. Understanding for the diversity of people and views that differ from my own, the necessity for a strong work ethic, and a newly acquired appreciation for the value of a dollar are only a few of the values I have gained from my experiences. Working retail can be a challenging, rewarding, and at times, exhausting opportunity; a committed effort can take a lot out of you. As with most jobs that work with the public, you have to put aside your personal opinions and emotions. Customers come into the store expecting a smile, so a positive an

Relationship Marketing and Marketing Plans

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the world of trade and economics has seen the importance and evolution of the term marketing and its various factors. But the concept of relationship marketing, which is the most relevant aspect of marketing, takes his importance when in the post-industrial era, the advancement of technology and communications permit the producers to have a direct contact with their consumers and let to know their needs, likes and preferences. When the companies and trade experts began to analyze that is more important the satisfaction of the clients and not only the transactions or getting money, they realized that a full integration of the communication between all the stakeholders of a business is the best tool to have an excellent throughput for the company. The lecture establishes that Relationship Marketing attempts to involve and integrate customers, suppliers and other infrastructural stakeholders into a firm's marketing strategy and activities (McKenna, 199

Managing Today's Multi-Generational Workforce

Managing today's widely differentiated workforce has proven to be difficult, yet surprisingly very productive. With today's workforce consisting of the majority of Generation X and Generation Y associates it can be strenuous getting their work ethics and views to coincide with the other generations because of the simple fact of how each generation has its unique values, attitudes, and behaviors. For instance a major difference between Generation X and the Baby Boomers/Veterans is that as Generation X has came to power it has been used to all kinds of new advanced technologies. Also having a flexible work schedule and having the opportunities to jump from job to job in able to receive higher salaries and better benefits has given them an advantage. They have now begun to "climb the corporate ladder" and start taking the jobs of the older generations who are set in their ways and are reluctant to change. A major difference between the

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was directed by David Fincher. This movie was released in 2008. This movie was narrated by Benjamin Button. Daisy is on her death bed in the hospital and she asks her daughter Caroline to read Benjamin Buttons life journal. It tells the story of a boy named Benjamin Button who ages in reverse, being born elderly, and dying as an infant. The only thing that sets Benjamin Button apart from others was his appearance. He still learned the basic concepts and skills at the same pace as everyone else. Concepts that were used throughout the movie include Birth and Infancy, Middle Childhood, Young Adulthood, Middle Adulthood, and Late Adulthood. The movie starts off with the birth of Benjamin Button. The birth of Benjamin Button was significant because a clock was responsible for his age reversed life. A man built this clock having time going in the reverse order. Therefore resulting in Benjamin Button having the looks of an elderly man but the size of an

Femininity: Mulan and Snow White

When my mother was young, she was fascinated by the beautiful princesses and their love with handsome princes in Disney animated fairy tales. Therefore, she started to become tender and submissive, as in films like Snow White, these qualities help the heroines to solve their plight and get a prince. Then when I was at the age of reading fairy tales, I watched Mulan and dreamed about being a brave and independent heroine since Mulan's courage and wisdom save her father, her army and her country. This contrast shows that as the heroines in fairy tales are rewarded for different characteristics and behaviors, they continuously reshape the understanding of femininity. In the article "Becoming Members of Society: Learning the Social Message of Gender", Aaron Devor states that "female and male behaviors are the result of socially directed hormonal instructions" (535), and fairy tales are one of the "socially directed hormonal instructions" which promote cer

Black Solidarity

" I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character" This quote above probably touches the entire part of both of the essay's that we will be discussing about, it is not just a quote but a prophesy that was fulfilled and a dream that came to be true for Dr king and for the African American society in the north American continent. Throughout time human civilization have battled each other due to the cause of differences in color and culture. it's still exists within our time, mankind has not found a solution to this problem but who knows this is just my opinion, although situation certainly have improved due to the course of time because the world as we know it was different in those days. Poisonous Elixir: The Story of an Hour

The seemingly oppressive nature that women lived in during the time of "The Story of an Hour" has to be considered in order to grasp the tumultuous emotions and thoughts experienced by the protagonist, Mrs. Mallard. She lives during a time where women weren't allowed to have any sense of power or exercise the act of self-determination for themselves. There was a "patriarchal code" that "favored the husband in all domestic affairs and left women without many legal or fiscal rights". Living in such a time can be very difficult for a women, especially when her spouse has a tyrannical and overbearing personality. Unfortunately, that is not the case of Mr. Mallard, who she happens to express had "kind" and "tender hands" and "never looked save with love upon her". Mrs. Mallard's demise after realizing that her husband was in fact alive and well, is a direct result of the inherent selfish nature she possesses and the self-centered thoughts that stems from it. The "monstrous joy that held her" after ruminating of a life without a husband was described for her as "drinking in the very elixir of life". That elixir ultimat

Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack

As a child, growing up in a Christian home, I was taught to believe that we are all created equal. We all descended from Adam and Eve after all, right? We are all members of the human race and have the same advantages or disadvantages, depending on our individual family and community situations, but certainly not depending on the color of our skin. My small town northern Wisconsin community, however, had no ethnic diversity when I was growing up. While I learned about other races in school, my sheltered and naive youth taught me nothing of the "then" present day, real world, injustices. I remember a couple of different occasions, while sitting around the supper table, my dad talking about his Air Force days and his comment that some of his best friends were "colored". I often wondered about that comment. As I got older, and a little bit more worldly, I have come to rea

Ruins of St Paul's Church

There exist a lot of historical places that are worth talking about in the world. One such historical place, which is found in China, is known as Macau. Macau is a city found on South China's coast and it counts among one of the oldest settlements of European origin. The town is most popular for its historical and cultural flair. Macau is a former Portuguese colony that exhibits both Chinese and Portuguese culture, which co-exist in harmony. One of the main attractions that makes Macau town popular is the Ruins of St Paul's church. The Ruins of St Paul's church is one of the most important landmarks of the city. As the name suggests, these are ruins of the old college and church of the Holy Mother of God, which was constructed in the 17th century. What remains of the building is a major stone facade, which is the only remainder of the building that was destroyed by fire in 1835.# Originally before it was destroyed by fire, the church of St Paul was the largest church i

Power Relationships in Father and Son and The Prussian Officer

There are many similarities in plot and theme in Langston Hughes' "Father and Son" and D. H. Lawrence's "The Prussian Officer." While each story is told in a very different style, the general tone is similar in each. The focal point in each story is a relationship between one man in power, and another man who is a subordinate. The dominant man has generally benevolent feelings towards his subordinate, information which is related to the reader through an omniscient narrator. Due to societal influences, the man in power suppresses this emotion not only from others, but from himself. This suppression later erupts into violence. Colonel Tom ("Father and Son") feels affection for his illegitimate black son, whereas the Prussian officer ("The Prussian Officer") harbors a homoerotic attraction to his orderly. These feelings are socially unacceptable to the point that neither man is capable of admitting this attraction even to himself. A description of oppressive heat occurs in both

Looping and Urban Schools

In their study, Grant, Richardson, and Forsten (2000) stated that a 1913 memo from the U.S. Department of interior touted that looping as one as one of the most important issues facing urban schools: "Shall teachers in graded schools be advanced from grade to grade with their pupils through a series of two, three, four or more years so that they may come to know the children they teach and be able to build the work of the latter years on that of the earlier years, or shall teachers be required to remain year after year in the same grade while the children, promoted from grade to grade, are taught by a different teacher every year? Because many elementary school teachers spend most of their careers assigned to one grade level, they tend to be thought of as specialists in that grade level rather than as specialist of teaching children." (Grant, Richardson, & Forsten, 2000, In the Loop). Therefore the question is, "What is the effect of looping students and the relationships between, pa

The Existence of Free Will

The scene displaying the choice of the red pill or the blue pill from The Matrix raises the question of what free will is and whether or not it exists. Is everything already pre-determined by "fate"? If there is such a thing as free will, is it something that we actually want? The most general response to this question is yes, we have free will and we would definitely want to have it. Many philosophers such as Thomas Aquinas would describe free will as being connected to moral responsibility. However, free will delves far beyond moral responsibility and into one's own personal accomplishments. The question to be considered is whether or not our choices and ability to act morally are pre-determined from birth, therefore eliminating our free will. In the movie, Morpheus asks Neo to choose between the red pill or the blue pill (in essence between fate or free will). Naturally, Neo chooses free will because most people would like to think that they have control over their

My Identity Inheritance

I have determined myself to be a star-bellied sneetch. I am a white, heterosexual male. Even though I do not follow a particular religion, I am still considered to be part of a dominant group. I've grown up in a middle class environment, which has given me opportunities that subordinate group members usually do not receive. Although I am not tall, classically good looking, or in top physical shape, my identity will continue to provide me an edge at a good life. My father, who is of mainly Irish descent, doesn't like talking about his family for personal reasons. For my family tree, I decided to interview my mother instead. She has more knowledge about her mother's side than her father's, so that is what I'll be writing about today. The Oelholf's immigrated to the United State from Germany near the end of the 19th century. The German family brought their young son, Fred, who is my great great grandfather.
