Saint Hippolytus of Rome

Hippolytus of Rome was one of the most prominent 3rd-century theologians in the Christian Church in Rome. He was born in 170 C.E. and died in 235 C.E. in Sardinia. Even though the exact place of his birth is unknown, it can be inferred that he was indeed probably born in Rome or is of Eastern descent. Hippolytus became a member of the Roman clergy and became a notable writer for the church. He was extremely talented in writing and learning, which won over the church easily. His intellect was known to exceed that of the bishops, who he refuted and showed no mercy. Hippolytus was one of the last Christian authors in Rome to write in Greek. He was often considered to be a student of Saint Irenaeus in Gaul since they both were passionate in heresy or difference of opinions. Especially since he wrote Kata pason haireseon elenkhos or The Refutation of all Heresies, it is regarded to as one of his chief works. The work consists of ten books in total. Books one through four describe the Gr

Obama and Nuclear Weapons

The article, by Michael Hirsh, focused on nuclear weapons and how President Obama has impacted, negatively or positively, with the different countries that are affiliated with them. He points out how Obama's efforts to prevent a nuclear war is slowly slipping due to countries gaining confidence and wanting to show that they could stayed on their own without help from the United States. Hirsh explains what the president is facing when it comes to possible nuclear war with other, highly equipped and equally dangerous, countries in the eastern hemisphere. The overall claim of Hirsh's article believes that Obama's production to maintain order and peace with the other powerful countries has diminished therefore resulting into the backlash and making the other countries flex their power to the world to gain respect. Hirsh recalled, before his presidency, Obama's full support for the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, who safely disposes of or stores weapons that may contain chemical or nuclear content, and how he wanted to lessen the possibility of a nuclear war. He confronts President Ob

Colorado Escrow and Title Services, LLC

Colorado Escrow and Title Services, LLC is a company that provides full title and escrow services for real estate properties. They issue title insurance to buyers, borrowers, and lenders. They also provide escrow services where they perform the closings for the real estate transactions. Colorado Escrow and Title Services, LLC has requested I review the process of their implementation of a new potential accounting information system. My first step was to take inventory to determine the requirements needed for a new accounting information system and if a new one is needed. At this time, I was looking at the company's current system to see if their goals were not being met. I met with the board of directors and upper management, and it was determined that the company needs improvement with speed, accessibility, room for growth, and long-term goals. A steering committee will be formed at this point to help with decisions during the process of determining if a new system should be implemented. The planning and investigation and analysis stage of the Systems Development Life Cycle is important because it will give the steering committee a bett

Expansion of Trade in the 15th Century

?Throughout history, many different civilizations have branched out into the world looking for new trade routes, land, and desirable goods that could not be found in their home land. In the mid-15th century China had massive fleets of ships that were several times larger than the average seagoing craft of the day. Chinese admiral Zheng He led these fleets as far as Africa, where he brought back new and fascinating things that the Chinese had never seen before. In 1492, the discovery of the new world by Christopher Columbus caused Spanish conquistadors to leave Spain in search of gold and wealth. The discovery of the new world sparked a global trading system between Europe, Africa, and the Americas that would last for centuries to come. I can only imagine what it would have been like to see the massive Chinese treasure fleets floating on the horizon as they approach the shore. It must have been a truly impressive sight to see, and must have been intimidating at first, but upon seein

Jonathan Franzen and Our Personal Points of View

The essay and speech, "Liking is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts", is a text written by Jonathan Franzen, who digs deep into the change of how the world is seen through the years and how our point of view through time has been blurred, changed and filtered by the technological alter. In the present time we stand as human beings but not as god created us, naked on the outside and naked on the inside. No, today we stand as individuals, who are fully affected by the technological and social networking world. With Jonathan Franzen's amazing and modern use of words, he grabs on to the young audience and shakes them into reality, to show them that the world is more than social network, cool gadgets and handy smartphones. Many people of the older generation have noticed these changes that have been going on in an enormous speed through the 1900's and into the 21st century and they have experienced the huge change that could be described as the stone ages into a future science fiction world.

Batman and the Bush Administration

Smoke billows out from a Manhattan skyscraper, damaged by a fiery explosion. This could easily be a scene from 9/11, however we see Batman looking grimly on as a poster advertises the film will be released soon. Clearly this film plays on the fears of terrorism. As depicted in The Dark Knight, the Joker plays the terrorist, while Gotham's leadership struggles to contain him. The film departs from the superhero ideals of pure good versus pure evil, showing a murky world where moral decisions have to be made in order to stop evil. Because of this, The Dark Knight seems to be an allegory for the War on Terrorism. This paper will look at how the Joker represents terrorism, while Batman represents George Bush and his administration's War on Terror. The Dark Knight opens with a predictable bank robbery. Masked robbers enter a bank, fire a few shots, and try to crack a safe. During the sequence a few of the thugs are discussing who exactly the Joker is. Because of the tilted camera angles s

The Sociological Imagination

C.W. Mills defined the sociological imagination' as a contrivance to understand that personal troubles can often be caused or influenced by broader issues within society, rather than as a result of the individual. The ultimate measure of this theory is the difference between personal troubles and public issues in society, as they are often not being identified as two different problems. If this divergence cannot be recognized then a sense of entrapment can be felt by the individual. Mills stated that the key to the sociological imagination was being able to see the relationship between the personal life of the individual and the wider public issues of societ

The Difference between Genders in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

"The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is the second and final novel written by Anne Brontë and published in 1848, the 19th century. Once we, the readers, have read it, we can notice many aspects from that time that differ from our nowadays lifestyle and also with our way to think. The novel clearly illustrates the role and situation of women during the Victorian era. Furthermore, this is going to be the focal point in order to write my paper. The author, who uses the first person singular, changes from Gilbert Markham to Helen Graham. The main part of the novel, where the basis of the plot is revealed, is explained from the woman's point of view. Moreover, it is at these points when we see what life was like for her and how she had to in an illegal way escape from the life she was living, breaking the English laws of that time. Furthermore, to die was the easiest way to escape from all that surrounding Mr Huntingdon's life. In my paper, I would like to explain how the narrator, when

Post Traumatic Embitterment Disorder (PTED)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) most likely is a result from a traumatic or catastrophic event. There are similar triggers such as divorce, loss of a job, or a death of a close relative or other event that causes conflict in what they believe is unfair or unjust (Linden, 2009) There is a test that mental health professionals can administer that can identify the level of stress and embitterment these individuals are experiencing. Post-Traumatic Embitterment Disorder (PTED) and Post-Traumatic Embitterment Disorder Scale are the key terms used in the research paper, and are explained very well. Although PTED is similar to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTED combines a person's belief and values versus the feeling that is created when the person was either wronged or a victim of an injustice (Linden, 2009). How to measure negative life experiences effect one's ability to react, cope, or handle depression that have manifested into psychological symptoms is the goal of the Post-Traumatic Embitterment Disorder Scale. The results of a test are used to show the mildness or severity of t

Social Studies Questions and Answers

1. What factors led to the emergence of a popular independence movement in India, and why did this movement lead to the establishment of two states, India and Pakistan, rather than to a single India? After achieving India's independence on August 15, 1946, the country faced many contradictory strains. On the one hand, too many people wanted India to proclaim itself a Republic with no allegiance to the British Crown, which ruled on India for 90 years. These people looked for an intense nationalist desire for an independent political, economic, and foreign policy path. "Long years ago, we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will wake to life and freedom." On the other hand, there were a lot of serious problems, since intellectuals, politicians and industrialists shared a broad consensus on the preferred directio

The Use and Abuse of Power

As Robert F. Kennedy once said "The problem of power is how to achieve its responsible use rather than its irresponsible and indulgent use - of how to get men of power to live for the public rather than off the public" (Kennedy). Power has many different definitions. It could be the ability to act or affect something strongly, with physical or mental strength (Power). Power also means the overall position or national strength in a community, which is a necessary component in any society; otherwise all pandemonium will break loose (Power). However, if someone takes power to the extreme, it could not be good either to him or her, or the society. Additionally, power could also have different meanings from person to person, and how he or she could define it to him or herself. Power has many synonyms of physical or mental strength, such as: might, vigor, energy, and effectiveness. Might is defined as having strength of something physical, such as moving heavy objects from place to place

The Music Man and Professor Harold Hill

In Meredith Wilson's 1957 Broadway hit, "The Music Man", Professor Harold Hill forcefully pushes people's buttons to instigate irrational fear in hopes to achieve his corrupt commercial purpose. In the famous song "Ya Got Trouble," Hill conveys a pleasant summary of fallacious arguments. His logic and assumptions to the people of River City can be evaluated and challenged with research. In a spew of decoys and logical fallacies, research indicates that Hill's melodic concoction includes a slippery slope, a red herring, and ignorance. Throughout the song, it's evident that there are fallacies that result from oversimplifying. More specifically, the slippery slope fallacy can be detected as Hill makes an assumption with little to no evidence. "I say, first, medicinal wine from a teaspoon, then beer from a bottle." (The Music Man), is an example of oversimplifying. Hill states that children who intake medicinal wine for treating illness will eventually resort to drinking beer, which has negative effects on the body. His argument frightens the folks of River City because they wouldn't want the consequence of drinking beer to occur

Dead Man's Path by Chinua Achebe

Now more than ever, the "golden rule" is needed or should be used by people. If you are not familiar with the term, the "golden rule" simply means to treat people the way you would like to be treated. It may sound simple but it is not as easy as it seems. In Chinua Achebe's short story, "Dead Men's Path", he is trying to stress the importance of this life lesson, respect and communication between different groups; this is still as relevant today as it was when the story was written forty years ago. With the recent catastrophic weather on the East coast, it is easy to think back to Achebe's short story and the meaning behind it. People, strangers, are helping each other get through one of the worst things this area has ever been through. The acts of kindness and selflessness are remarkable. People who have lost everything are still helping others and finding the strength to move past the devastation. People like this are truly living their lives in such a positive way and deserve so

Biography of Cicero

Marcus Tullius Cicero, perhaps the greatest orator of Ancient Rome, was born on January 3d, 106 B.C. in the town of Arpinium, about 70 miles from Rome. Although his family had achieved some measure of wealth by the time of his birth, none had ever been Senators and they were still considered middle class. His Father did however consider himself to be a man of culture and desired great success for his son. Knowing that this elevation in class could only come in Rome, Cicero's Father sent him there, at a very young age, to study under the great orator Crassus. Once in Rome, Cicero studied philosophy, law, and literature, and had a brief stint in the military, serving under Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo during the Social War from 90 B.C. to 88 B.C. Realizing quickly that he was not a military leader, he returned to his studies and by age 26, began pleading cases. (Marinone, 2004) One of his earliest and most notable trials came during the reign of the dictator Sulla. Cicero defended Sextus

The Noble Truths of Life

The everyday world we live in is complex, often allowing joy and fulfillment along with pain and suffering. We as human beings can't help to ask the question why. Why do so many people get sick and die? Why are there natural disasters that destroy entire cities? Why do people have to work so hard just to have enough money to barely feed their families? In the Hindu and Buddhist teachings we learn that to live is to suffer. It is a key aspect in the balance of the universe. The four principles or truths of Buddhism are:  The truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the way to the end of suffering.  Speaking metaphorically, we have a disease, we know how we caught it, we know there is a cure and the treatment is tried and true. 1. Existence is suffering.  Whether we are talking about the acute pain of a wound or the chronic pain of toothache; about the death or loss of a parent or the abandonment by a lover; th

Letter to English Committee

Dear English Portfolio Committee: It is very difficult to admit that English Comprehension and writing are my least favorite subjects. After twelve years of schooling, I thought my ability to put a cohesive thought on paper would have been accomplished so when I found out that I needed to take remedial English it was a downer. This class has opened my eyes to a number of things good and bad about my approach to writing. I have learned that reading over your paper multiple times and making revisions is not negative, as well as asking others to read and critique your work. More importantly, through this class I have come to realize that I have not been as organized in my approach to writing. My first drafts on Uganda and Celebrities were examples of disorganization. Re-reading my papers has helped me visualize my writing. There is mental work and organization skills that I have developed. These skills have been extended to many facets of learning throughout the class. Organizatio

Comparison of Antigone and The Republic

?Different rulers have different views regarding law and justice. Some rulers create laws for their own benefits whereas others create laws for the benefit of the city. In this essay, I will describe both those kind of rulers. One is Creon in Antigone, who puts the love for his city and its law above familial ties, but is actually driven by his love for power. The other is Socrates in The Republic, who creates laws so that the people in his city can live peacefully. Antigone is a tragedy written by Sophocles. It characterizes Antigone as the main character. Oedipus and Jocasta's incestual love result in four children: Eteocles, Polynices, Ismene, and Antigone. After Oedipus's death, Polynices and Eteocles agreed to alternate as king. However, Eteocles refused to give up power to Polynices and this resulted in a battle in which the two brothers ended up killing each other. Eteocles died defending the city whereas Polynices died fighting against it. Antigone begins right after the batt

The Americanization of Chinese Food

In America, Chinese food is the most popular ethnic cuisine, with Mexican food coming in second. However, what passes as "Chinese" food in the States can be a far cry from the meals that people in the Republic of China enjoy. Authentic Chinese food is different compared to the cuisine that we eat in the United States. For instance, most American Chinese food is heavily battered and fried; vegetables are more or fewer condiments, rather than the primary basis for some dishes. The American Chinese food that we get when we order take-out does not embrace the many regional differences found throughout the vast empire of China. Although Chinese foods in the States might taste better then authentic Chinese food, it is nowhere close to being as healthy. For instance, the average Chinese derives anywhere from 6 to 24 percent of their daily calories from fat, compared to 39 percent for the average American. (CITE) Also, the Chinese eat more calories than Americans per pound of body weight but s

Death and Dust in A Rose for Emily

The short story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner has many themes and symbolism. Miss Emily Grierson, the main character, is a strange lady. She is very withdrawn from society and definitely shows signs of mental illness even though the town seems to deny it. The fact that Miss Emily had a mental illness that was brought on by her seclusion from society and her neediness for a father figure may be why she never left the house and tried to keep her father's dead body with her. Miss Emily may have murdered her boyfriend Homer because he was not the marrying kind and it was too much for her disordered mind to take. The theme of the death and dust that hangs and surrounds Emily, Her character having a mental illness and The surrounding questions to Homer's disappearance. Emily lets death hang over her. She pretends to deny death itself. She has a strange affiliation with the dead bodies of the men she loved. She shows this obsessive behavior when her father died, "She told them that

Minimizing Negative Effects of Divorce on Children

Try to think of one friend you know whose parents are divorced. If you think about it, it's not very difficult to do. Even though divorce rates have decreased since 1996, divorce is still very common - in fact, every thirteen seconds a couple gets a divorce (6,646 divorces every day). (Irvin, 2012). Statistics in February 2012 showed that the "overall probability of marriages ending in divorce falls between 40% and 50%" (O'Shea, 2012). Going through a divorce can be very difficult, especially for a child. I have a friend who is still dealing with the negative effects of her parents' divorce even though it happened a long time ago. Divorce is something that could take many more years to accept, admit and adjust to. Children may hurt from the loss of their family unit. Schedules, plans, holidays and birthdays may not be the same as they were before. A new partner may come into a parent's life, and housing arrangements often change. All of these changes can be overwhelming to children and could lead to problems later in life. Sometimes, divorce can be so overwhelming that it leads to suicide. How a child's divorcing parents b

Political Outlook of Thomas More and Jean Froissart

Thomas More and Froissart are both medieval authors of an era when English society was ruled by a king and the governing body consisted only of wealthy property-owners. The authors were both members of the aristocratic ruling class of the time period. Froissart is the author of Froissart's Chronicles in which he tells of the rebellion of the common people against the aristocrat's. He is a prideful member of the aristocratic society, and his writing is ripe with dissension towards the common people. More depicts the "perfect" society in his book Utopia. In the book he creates a clever satire: he presents what appears to be a humanist society but, in actuality, is one that consists only of aristocrats. The authors create very different political studies but their political values prove to be quite similar. They both believe that common people are the biggest threat to society, uneducated common people should not be a part of government, and government should be ruled by an educated so

City of Glass by Paul Auster

The novel "City of Glass" depicts the story of Daniel Quinn, a man who lost his wife and son and now has become attached to a detective case that brings new people into his life because of one phone call that he had picked up. Throughout the story the question remains in the readers head as to why does Daniel Quinn decide to take on this detective case. Paul Auster writes the story in a way that gets the reader to make many assumptions but one that many can agree upon is that losing any kind of family member is a horrible incident and can change the way one acts and thinks for the remainder of their life. The realization of being lonely plays a huge role throughout the novel within the connections between Daniel Quinn and the characters he now associates himself with. In the novel "City of Glass", Auster portrays Daniel Quinn as a character with lost emotions and a psychological state that is shown by his actions of impersonating other people. A recurring theme throughout "City of G

History of the Welfare State in the United Kingdom

The UK's welfare system has a long history and has evolved as a response to social, economic and political changes in society. The birth of the welfare state after WWII was a watershed in British history. The newly elected Labor Government "took on the task of setting up a 'welfare state' that would systematically tackle Beveridge's 'five giants'. The creation of a new, more equal society was the key task of government. Social policy was at the top of the political agenda". (Walsh et al, p.46). Elaborating more on the welfare state as far as Beveridge's report is concerned, William Beveridge's report according to Chandler (2002), was to help the citizens of Britain to combat the five giant evils; squalor, ignorance, want, idleness and disease. He goes on to explain that the report was very vital in the sense that Britain was then at war and filth, poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and diseases were common due to the daily bombardment of Britain that crippled and even destroyed most

Luncheon on the Grass by Edouard Manet

Edouard Manet was a French painter who was born on January 23, 1832 and died on April 30, 1883. He was an expert when it came to approaching modern-life subjects in his work, filling the gap between the art movement's realism and impressionism. After painting "Luncheon on the Grass" (1863) Manet received a great deal of media attention. While a nude in a classical setting was considered acceptable, one nude in a contemporary setting was not acceptable. Savaged by the critics, "Luncheon on the Grass" caused a public scandal. Influenced by the painting "Judgment of Paris" by Raphael, Manet featured a naked woman with clothed men. The female's body appears luminous and her gaze is directed towards the viewer. Manet wanted the viewer's attention drawn directly towards the nude female's body. The meaning of this piece of art that Edouard Manet intended was that just because a nude female is casually sitting beside two fully clothed men doesn't mean that the two men's attention will be towa

Yoga and Islam

Orthodox Muslims believe that the practice of yoga is tantamount to idol worshiping and fear that it will erode their faith in Allah and Islam. The Hindu element of yoga is the major problem of orthodox Muslim; they see yoga as polytheism and the practice is considered forbidden. The controversy of Islam and yoga is on the rise, but some Muslims are beginning to see the positive aspect of drawing yoga into Islam. As a yogi and a Muslim, I see the practice of yoga as beneficial to salat (prayer) and reposing in the oneness of Allah. Yoga teaches how to stop the mind from distraction, ceasing all worldly activities and focusing on attaining Brahman. Many Muslims struggle with focusing during salat, if the practice of yoga will lead to attaining total focus during salat, why will it be termed forbidden? Anything done in pursuit of knowing Allah and letting go of distraction before salat is regarded as an meritorious act of honoring and following the teachings of Prophet Muhamm
