Narrative Essay on Mermaids
Tales of mermaids have been around for thousands of years. Men have told these tales of beautiful and dangerous creatures who live primarily beneath the sea. The common image of the Merfolk, mermaids and mermen, is that they are humans from the waist up, but fishes from the waist down. They are said to have the tail of an aquatic animal such as a fish or dolphin. Their sighting was thought to be a bad omen, foretelling storms and rough seas. There are numerous folk tales describing mermaid's interactions with humans. Mermaids are generally described as having the upper body of a beautiful woman with long hair, and the lower half of their body from the waist down, was that of a fish. In many of the classic descriptions mermaids are to be found sitting on a rock just off the shore, combing their hair, singing sweetly, and admiring their beauty in a hand mirror. Their beautiful singing brings men into their clutches much like the classical sirens. Their unfortunate victims are |

Becoming a Parent
A child is an incredible responsibility, and a bit of planning goes a long way. This is not an exhaustive list of the financial preparations new parents should be aware of before welcoming a baby, but it is a start. After a child is born there are many other financial concerns such as paying for college and adding them as beneficiaries to your will and retirement accounts. Anyway, I think parenting never really ends, but being financially prepared from the start will give you more time with your child.(Xing Lu's Bio on, 12 August 2008) There are several reasons ways our life will be changed with a new baby when she/he comes to our life. The first reason is financial problems. You need a lot of dipper for kids. As a matter of fact, you might spend about $350 for a kid per week. Also, you need to purchase clothes for kids. Another point is this; you often need to take him/her to the doctors. When the kids are sick or have a fewer, you have to shot to them, and |

Daedalus and Icarus under Different Lights
As most all readers and writers know there are many benefits of literature. One benefit that specifically affects the reading population as a whole is the capability of different readers to interpret different stories in numerous different ways. Here the myth, "Daedalus" by Thomas Bulfinch is interpreted under many different lights by several different people. One interpretation that I found to be the most interesting was the poem, "Waiting for Icarus" interpreted by Muriel Rukeyser. Not only is this poem told from the point of view of a woman but it also questions certain themes such as adolescence and responsibility, which are also questioned in the original myth of "Daedalus". I chose the poem, "Waiting for Icarus" interpreted by Muriel Rukeyser because as I previously said it was the only poem written from the point of view of a woman. The second reason, and probably the more intellectual reason I chose this poem was because I found many t |

Terror at the Hospital
The phone rang about seven times at midnight. No one else woke up, so from some place I found the energy and strength to let go of my dreams and answer the phone. At the other end was the receptionist from the emergency room. She gave me news that I did not want to hear: my sister had been in a car accident. I left my house in a hurry, not knowing how my sister was. Hospitals are not the happiest of places. Sad faces are all around, tired bodies, frustrated relatives and a nurse who always seems too calm to be in the emergency room. I rushed to speak to the first nurse I saw, and then I thought "Did I leave my lights on? Wait a minute, I forgot to tell mom and dad about the accident." The nurse said to me, "She's getting her x-rays examined." In that moment, as I heard the nurse's tranquility, I felt a relief. I reunited my mind with my body and called my mom. Phone ring after ring, and finally the sweet hello of my mother. I told her all I knew at that point, which could probably be said in a single sentence. "Patricia is in the |

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
In Harriet Jacobs' autobiographical narrative, "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl," Linda Brent's moral decision to gain freedom for her and her family was an ethical decision that leads to a positive outcome of freedom. It is in this more than anything that Brent suggests the life story of a free woman differs from that of a slave. "Slavery is terrible for men; but it is far more terrible for women...o the burden common to all, they have wrongs, and sufferings, and mortification's peculiarly their own". Not only is it difficult being a slave, but being a woman slave is great hardship in this time period. With that being said, Linda's decision to resist Dr. Flint's power fueled her quest to become a free woman had a positive outlook. Dr. Flint had the legal right to do anything he wanted to Linda, but wished to seduce her by tricking and threatening her rather than raping her. Throughout the book, Linda constantly rebels against him and re |

Symbolism and Historical Significance - Of Mice and Men
In the novel "Of Mice and Men", John Steinbeck uses a background setting which lets the reader know that the story could not take place anywhere else. Through intricate description of the setting without introducing characters, the author gives the impression that the setting will directly affect the story. A background setting is integral to the action of the story, unlike a backdrop setting which forms a context for the story. To properly analyze the backdrop setting of the novel "Of Mice and Men" a discussion of the role, symbolism, and historical significance of the setting must take place. By focusing on the setting in the first few paragraphs of the book, the author sets the stage for what is going to happen. By using adjectives such as "green" and "deep" to describe the Salinas River, John Steinbeck creates a mood of mystery, unpredictability and that something is going to be revealed. Through various landscape descriptions such as &qu |

A Study of Cinematography Techniques in Gallipoli
In the making of any good film, the use of different cinematographic techniques plays an essential role in grasping the viewer's interest in the film. Any director's main goal is to keep to viewer interested throughout the whole story, and to really encourage the meaning behind the story. Filmmakers, in order to interact meaning, to captivate, and to generate a specific psychological, or emotional response in an audience, or viewer uses cinematographic techniques. I will argue that in the film Gallipoli, through the use of different cinematographic techniques, the character Archie loses his innocence through the bonds of friendship. The first time that we see the use of a cinematographic technique is when Archie and Frank meet each other for the first time at the championship sprinting race, for the 100-yard dash. The race starts, and after a little bit of sprinting we see Frank look over at Archie. This is where we see the use of the cinematographic technique of a subj |

The Death Penalty Debate
Capital punishment is a central debating issue in many discussions about America's judicial system. The continuing existence of the death penalty for capital crimes speaks to the strong convictions possessed by our forefathers. They wanted America to stand for certain principles, for inalienable rights and equal opportunities. In this spirit, the experience of the hangman's noose should not be reserved for the murder elitist, but also those other killers deemed nefarious enough by their peers. Equal opportunity execution is only fair. Capital punishment should not only be available only for serial killers, but for capital offenders across the board. Anything else would just be un-American. The death penalty is an occasional reminder of the rules that our country has set in place regarding our behavior. It is a display of the nation's power over its citizen's behavior. Capital punishment is a tool for social control. When implemented, it never ceases to cause a stir among the talking heads (media, bloggers, classroo |

Escapism in Modern Literature
Escapism is the tendency to escape from daily reality by indulging in daydreaming, fantasy, or entertainment. Many characters that we have learned about this semester escape from their real worlds by indulging in extreme distractions. Whether it is Patrick Bateman in "American Psycho" who escapes societies expectations or David in "Giovanni's Room" who escapes from being judged in society, or the women displayed in the poem "Soliloquy of the Solipsist" who escape reality, and finally the character in "Goodbye to All That" who escapes in a physical way, it is safe to call all of them escapists. All of these characters have one thing in common and that is escaping their true identities. They all escape reality in either a mental, emotional or physical approach. Let's begin with the "Soliloquy of the Solipsist" by Sylvia Plath. First, it is important to understand what it means to be a solipsist. Solipsism is the theory that the self is all that you kn |

Religious Experience
Introduction The claim that religious experience can tell us nothing about god, because it is all in the mind strikes at the heart of the problem of religious experience. The study of religious experience, which took off with William James' definitive study in 1902, has put the topic at the forefront of current theological debate, with the fields of neuro-theology and psychology making considerable contributions. Despite the potentially decisive challenge which religious experience has been forced to face, its significance for religious believers remains undisputed. As Peter Donovan observes: 'Awareness of God, oneness with God, the sense of his presence...is vital for religious belief. It has kept it alive in the past and makes it plausible for milli |

Three Great Chinese Artists of the Yuan Dynasty
The period of the Yuan Dynasty in China saw an explosion in landscape painting. The reign of Kublai Khan (1260-1294) caused a large amount of the scholarly class to leave the imperial court, meaning "amateur" artists began to show the skills of artists of the court. At this point, four artists became known as the "Four Great Masters of the Yuan Dynasty" or "Four Great Masters of Landscape Painting." These men were Huang Gongwang, Wu Zhen, Ni Zan, and Wang Meng. Although all four were significant in Chinese painting, this paper will focus on the lives and works of Gongwang, Zan, and Meng. To understand the way that these men painted, it is important to know about the Yuan Dynasty itself. At the start of the Yuan Dynasty in 1279, China was under Mongol control. Although it was Genghis Khan who moved his men into China, it was his grandson, Kublai Khan who began the dynasty. The government was run by Mongols, but there was a strong attempt to rule in a Chinese fashion. This led to a less |

Ethnomedicine from the Bush
Cultures around the world constantly label other cultures as "weird" or odd; they judge the unknown culture based on the culture that they know and that they experience on a personal level. This method of judging another culture without dropping a personal bias for one's own culture being the better culture is called ethnocentrism (Haviland, Prins, Walrath, and McBride, 4). Cross culturally, societies are diverse in numerous ways. Religious beliefs, gender roles, technology, clothing, looks, and medical views vary throughout the cultures of the world. The medical views of cultures weigh in largely with the importance of a particular culture's beliefs and lifestyles. Ethno medicine is a large part of anthropology and is the study of different culture's ill related behaviors and their medicinal cures or remedies (Quinlan, 4). People's daily lives and everyday practices also vary among cultures. The people of Dominica, of America, and the Massai have diverse |

Flaws of the Death Penalty
In all societies, many cases occur where a criminal must be punished, so that they can be taught a lesson and they can stop committing crimes. There are many different ways of punishing criminals: one is the death penalty. The issue of the death penalty has been avidly discussed throughout history. Some people support the idea of the death penalty, since they say it is only fair for one to forfeit their life if they take the life of another. Others feel that the death penalty is not fair, and fear that many innocents have been penalized for something they did not do. The issue of capital punishment deals with the moral issues of many people with different opinions within a community. It is a cruel punishment, and many have stated that legal systems should be able to devise another punishment to replace it. Prejudice is present in cases involving the death penalty. Many feel that all civilized communities should abolish the death penalty. It can seem dreadfully unfair to the familie |

Short Story "Sweat" by Zora Neale Hurston
Men and women have not always had the same rights, nor have African-Americans and Caucasians. Zora Neale Hurston is the author of "Sweat", and a preeminent African American woman who was prominent in the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a predominantly black cultural movement in the 1920's and 1930's. Hurston grew up in Florida during the 1890's and early 1900's, a time when racism and sexism was at it's peak. When she was growing up, women did not have a voice, especially African-American women. At this time, women were expected to stay at home and maintain the household. They were expected to wash and fold the laundry, cook for the family, maintain a clean household, wash the dishes, and what the man of the house wanted from them. Men would mistreat and abuse the women, and the women were expected to not stand up for themselves. Finally the women decided enough was enough, and started standing up to the men and thus began the "Feminist Movement". In |

The Green River Killer
Mary Steinman gave birth to her son Gary Leon Ridgway on Febuary 18th, 1949, in Salt Lake City, Utah. When Gary was nine years old his family moved to Washington State. As Gary got older he suffered from occasionally wetting the bed. When his mother found out she would clean him up, and then humiliate him in front of his brother and father. This upset him but also aroused him. In this essay I will discuss the crimes, the trial, and the arrest. Gary's first five victims are found either in or around the Green Mile River in Washington State, and that's his nickname was born. He targeted runaways, prostitutes, and drug addicts. He would pick you his victims while driving down the road and take them to where he would later dump their bodies. To put them the girls at ease he would show them a picture of his son and talk affectionately about him. When the girls where a |

Laura and Amanda in The Glass Menagerie
Parenting is promoting and supporting the health, education and helping a child grow. Parents educate their children based on their life time experience but still most have failed in raising their kids. Controlling, mandating and rigid parents tend to live their lives through their kids and in most cases this are people that did not accomplish anything great in their youth years and the thought that did if they just had someone to push them they would have had succeeded in life. The case of the short story of "The Glass Menagerie", Tennessee Williams illustrates a mother of two, who is so obsessed with her youth years that tries to re-live her daughter's life, this emphasis how she what she would of done things differently. Amanda Wingfield has failed life and in her marriage, but refuses to admit it, instead she lives Laura's life to show that she was not a failure. Hasbro and the Game Cranium
For many generations board games have been played. Kids from 5 to even an 80 year old can always have fun playing. However, to have a fun experience playing, the board game should be attractive only by looking at the outer design of the box, have the number of players fluctuated if need it, and include a variety of "movements/rules" that keeps the excitement going! Cranium is the game that is being evaluated based on criteria listed above. To my best understanding, Cranium meets all the standards of an enjoyable board game. The outer design of a board game should always be the main attraction to the players. It should include bright colors, some type of animation and additional facts base on the game. Animation and colors (especially bright colors) creates a visual image of the content inside the box. In this case the board game. Having an actual image of what the board game it's about is essential this is because the box becomes the attention grabber of the main targ |

Race, Racism and Race Relations
How do we define racism? What are the main analytical modules used to explain the nature of racism in modern societies? How do we understand the changing forms of racial and social relations and what kind of political structures that they are based on? (Bulmer & Solomos, 1999). In their book 'Racism and Society'(1996), Solomos and Back have stated that over the past two decades, theoretical and political debates have raged over the status of race and racism both to the extent of social and analytical concepts. During the same period, it's obvious that for numerous political and policy debates the question of race has been the core issue. Nevertheless, as Miles and Brown (2003) claimed, the concept of racism is contested. Nowadays, in spite of the popular use of the word 'racism' in political and academic discourse, Miles and Brown (2003) thought readers may be surprised to know that it is of very recent origin. There is no reference to the word 'racism' in the Oxford English Dictio |

Temperature, Light Intensity, and Photosynthesis
Abstract This experiment gives an insightful look into the effects temperature, and light intensity has on the rate of photosynthesis of a C3 plant. An experiment carried out to measure this proved wrong the general scientific believe that rate of photosynthesis of C3 plants is faster when closer to source of light and at room temperature, but concurs with the notion that photosynthesis occurred slower when the plant is farther away from source of light, and when at a high, or low temperature. Since it was noted that the inability of the experiment to fully support the general scientific notion might be due to some error or irregular changes in the experimental procedure, further experiment to fully support the hypothesis was proposed. This work also noted the relevance of photosynthesis in human's daily life. Introduction The impact of temperature and light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis cannot be overlooked in the field of science. It is believed that temperature exerts a g |

Slavery in the 1787 Constitution of the United States
Introduction Throughout the early history of the United States of America, there have been many strong and passionate debates on the role that slavery played in founding of the new and young Union, specifically its interpretation in the 1787 draft of the Constitution. Before the Civil War, there were several groups that advocated the abolition of slavery in the United States, but held varying opinions on whether or not the Constitution of 1787 could solely be relied on to accomplish this. Out of these differing opinions on whether the Constitution could abolish slavery alone grew two prominent theories. First, there was the idea that the Constitution was drafted as a pro-slavery document – the neo-Garrisonian theory – and only by amending the document could the institution of slavery be ended. The second theory was that the Constitution was, in fact, antislavery, and provided sufficient legal basis for ending slavery in the Southern states without amendment. There are seve |
