Athletes and Steroids
We as people have the competitive nature in sports, often taught to us in early childhood. The real question is when have we gone too far? The use of steroids to help ones athletic performance is at an all-time high. Athletes feel the demand to be the best and are taking what steps they believe are necessary to stay competitive. "If winning is everything, and if we are taught that only winning counts, we only encourage teen, college, and professional athletes to bend or break the rules and search for new drugs that won't be detected by doping test" (Yesalis, Cowart 1). As athletes compete for excellence in sports, so does the use of steroids in athletes. Steroid usage in athletes is a controversial issue, with much debate over the harmful effects. Although there is much controversy, steroid testing should be mandatory. All sports organizations should test for performance enhancing drugs. They place athletes at an unfair advantage. It also places the users at risk with th |

Identity and Culture
Every single person has their own unique identity and culture. An 'identity' is the image that one projects out into the rest if the world and 'culture' is the image which one has of themselves. Culture plays a huge role in shaping your identity. A person's beliefs and morals are made up by culture and remain throughout your entire life. Culture is what made you the person you are today and determines who or what you choose to associate yourself with. Your background and upbringing is what sets you apart from everyone else because no one has been raised the same. My identity would not exist if it wasn't for my own culture and the values I have carried from it along the years. The morals I have today exist because of the certain culture I grew up in. I grew up hearing and listening to what my parents telling me what it acceptable for me to do and what is not acceptable for me to do. Because of this I learnt the difference between what is right and what is wrong from my parents. My parents learned from |

Hypertension
One of the major health problems that the American society and the whole world experience is the prevalence of hypertension or high blood pressure, caused illnesses or deaths in many people today. A special report made by the website Lifeclinic.com stated that almost 50 million Americans have hypertension, "1 in every 4 adults" (2013). This statistic illustrates the increasing number of people who are gradually suffering and eventually dying due to hypertension. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is defined to be the "condition which can result when the arterial diameter is reduced and increased pressure caused by reduced diameter of the arteries plays a greater role in hypertension" (Varona 1999 46). To comprehend the concept of hypertension, a definition of blood pressure is needed. Blood pressure is defined as "the pressure of the blood flowing through the blood vessels against the vessel walls." In effect, if a high blood pressure occurs in the |

Wiretapping to Prevent Future Terrorist Attacks
On September, 11 2001 our country was attacked by a group of terrorist. During the time they spent in our country they were suspected of communicating with higher ranking Al Qaeda officials (Haugen 1). All of this could have been prevented. If there was a more effective way for the government to monitor threats we would be better prepared to foil an attack. Wiretapping is a step in the right direction to protecting Americans. Truly if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about. They aren't listening to find out what you're having for dinner. The government is listening for terrorist plots. This country is one of the most privileged countries in the world and yet we are only aware of the privileges when our freedoms are shrunk to keep us safe. We take our rights for granted and won't let them shrink to keep us safe. Since this country was created there has been a fear instilled into us as children. This fear is the fear of the government gaining too mu |

Ethics Information Technology
With advancements in technology such as the Internet and wireless capabilities, the act of storing photos, documents, and other personal information in the cloud has increased as well. In the past, we stored all of this data in physical form in our homes or offices or, at most, data was stored locally rather than on the internet. Since this data is no longer stored solely in your possession at a physical location, the security and privacy surrounding who can access this information and on what basis has become a concern. Different companies have their own policies regarding these issues as well as varying countries and territories having their own sets of laws and regulations on the matter. The reach of some of these laws has grown more and more distorted as new laws and regulations are enacted or altered. The most main-stream of these issues being the varying laws and transparency surrounding cloud storage privacy and data disclosure in the United States versus Europe. In the United States, the restraint or willingness to turnover personal information about a cu |

Notes on Processing a Crime Investigation
An Antelope Valley resident, Marco Chiclana, has been convicted of four felonies and two misdemeanors in reference to a struggle between himself and deputies. He filed a lawsuit against the deputies involved, claiming they had unjustly beaten him outside the local hospital. Two of the felony counts were battery on a peace officer and two were for resisting an executive officer. The misdemeanor counts were for battery and resistance. His conviction of the misdemeanors relieved him of a fifth felony of attempted mayhem. For these charges, Chiclana could receive only a few days in jail or the maximum sentence, which is five years behind bars. As he has no criminal record, the maximum sentence is an unlikely conclusion. The struggle was a result of a wrongly relayed 911 call. Chiclana and his family were outside the hospital trying to convince his father to go back inside the hospital after a heart surgery. Their car would not start and they were attempting to start it using screwdrivers; however, the father had accidentally scraped Chiclana on his face, prompting the other family members to call 911 and ask for help m |

Is Frank in "Educating Rita" an Effective Teacher?
In order to reach any conclusion on whether a teacher is or not effective, one must first proceed to an evaluation of the teacher's role. Is a teacher not required by norm to be effective? Should not the act of teaching in itself imply effectiveness? According to the Oxford Dictionary for Advanced Learners, teaching is simply defined as the work of a teacher. That is, teaching is an act that seems to not imply any successful aftermath. However, does effectiveness require only positive effects? If one again relies on the Oxford Dictionary definition, it might be put forward that a more definite solution is in reaching distance. According to it, something that is effective is something that is capable of "producing the result that is wanted or intended; producing a successful result". That means that for anyone or anything to be considered effective (which means not only teachers or teaching) it must produce positive results that may be objectively evaluated. Then, if |

Protecting Children - Child Labor
Global Issue: Case 5: Application of Standards of Engagement to Child Labor Adidas is known for manufacturing shoes and clothing. They do not directly produce their products but has many suppliers worldwide. With so many suppliers for their footwear, Adidas had to establish some kind of control for their footwear factories in regards to labor practices and issues surrounding safety, health, and environment (Beauchamp, Bowie, & Arnold, 2008). Adidas has been subjected to attacks by activists in regards to their manufacturer's working environment. They have discovered that some of their suppliers are not operating at the standards that the company has set. Adidas has their Standards of Engagement (SoE) which aims to ensure that all its suppliers factory are safe and fair place to work. The SoE has been updated and patterned after the ILO conventions. This states that all sporting goods industries must pay attention to the following labor, safety, health and environmental i |

London and the Barbican Complex
In 1951, the City of London held a design competition for the building of a new community in the boundary area of central London. Geoffry Powell won this competition along with two other teachers from Kingston Peter Chamberlin and Christof Bon, who formed a partnership to execute the design. The competition received a lot of notoriety partly because of the emphasis on designing a big new residential project, but mainly because this event marked the arrival of the planning ideas of Le Corbusier in England. This new project was called Barbican and was sited on 42 acres of land. By that time, brutalist architecture had flourished in England, which originated from the modernist architectural movement. A typical example of this movement could be the Barbican complex, because it was a part of those buildings which were linear, fortress-like, and blockish, often with a predominance of concrete construction. |

My Participation in Relay For Life (RFL)
I recently volunteered at the Relay For Life Saturday April 13th, 2013 at the USF track & field stadium from about 7 pm until 3 am. I went with my fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha as we had a tent sent up on the west curve of the track. We were selling noodles and pasta that one of my brothers had cooked before the event. It was really a great experience and time, as I had not partaken in a Relay For Life since I want to say my freshman year in high school. There was a decent amount of people there including some cuties so that was a plus! The main rule was that each organization or "team" involved in Relay For Life has to have one walker on the track at all times. There were also fun games and contest such as the hairiest chest competition, which I did not make a ru |

Short Story - The Eleven Inch Death
It all started with an eleven inch grinder from Subway. This was the cause of the death for a poor young man named Carl Matson. This is how it all happened, Carl decided that after his long wrestling match, he was hungry and wanted some subway. Carl was different then most wrestlers because he had a problem that if he didn't eat enough he would pass out. Carl then went to Subway and ordered a foot long subway and filled it with everything possible because he didn't want to pass out if he didn't eat enough. Carl arrived home, showered, and then sat down to eat his subway grinder. After finishing his grinder he decided that he would watch some television. After a show or two Carl realized he was having a really weird feeling in his stomach. The first thing that came to Carl's mind was that he was going to pass out because he didn't have enough food. He then decided to go to the refrigerator to get something else to eat. It all went downhill from that point on. A |

What it Takes to be a Working Mother
I would be confident to say that everyone knows a working mother or two personally. Working mothers are quite the norm and touch every aspect of our modern day society. I am one of the many working mothers in the full time work force today. Personally, I would laugh at the term normal when used in the same sentence as mother. At times my life and is quite the opposite of what others would consider to be normal. I have a full time job and a full time family. I can say that life can be hectic, challenging and rewarding all in a single day at any given time. Each day is filled with the challenge of holding down a full time career and the grace of being a loving mother of challenging children. In the end, the rewards are endless and my goal is clearly to be the best at all I do in my career and for my family. I can personally say that having a full time career and being a single mother is draining for a lack of a better term. I raised my son Alex as a single mother since he was 7 years o |

Sonny's Blues by James Baldwin
The power of our unconscious beliefs plays a great role in our lives. Life occurs exactly how we order it. Our words, thoughts, actions, and beliefs are all working together to order up the results we are creating. We have the power of creating the life we want, instead of getting what we think we deserve. It is the matter of facing our unconscious mind and bringing all our problems, fears and real desires up. It is extremely difficult if not impossible, but it is very important to face our fears and be honest with ourselves. When trying to be aware of the unconscious we may not want to admit the bitter truths we may find. "When an individual makes an attempt to see his shadow, he becomes aware of (and often ashamed of) those qualities and impulses he denies in himself but can plainly see in other people []" (von Franz 174). And indeed many times I find myself thinking about somebody's negative features and then realizing that I have the same or similar problems. "[The shadow] is exact |

Global Business
One of the most important components of the global context for IHRM is employment law and regulation. This chapter is about employment law and labor standards and ethics in the global economy. International standards, national trade agreements, commercial diplomacy efforts with governments, and varying country laws and cultures all impact how MNEs must operate. National, supranational, and extra-territorial laws have varying legal and regulatory impacts on nation states and their actors (firms, labor organizations, regulatory bodies, and individuals). And, finally, moving beyond a pure concern with compliance with the law, there is growing legal and public concern with MNEs showing ethical conduct in their relationships with all of their stakeholders, being responsible corporate citizens, and establishing transparent corporate governance mechanisms. Failure to comply with local employment laws and any regional or international employment standards that apply can carry liabilities at ma |

The Profession of Arms
"My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." 1 The Army is a profession of arms that has instilled this famous quote and sacrificed blood, sweat, and their lives to protect the freedoms of the United States of America. Men and woman of this great nation are shaped into professional warriors trained and entrusted to support and defend the Constitution. The white paper describes a professional as one who develops expertise over time through extensive institutional training, knowledge, and expanding practices.2 The US Army is a profession in the sense that its members proficiently protect, serve, and defend the people, our domain, and uphold the traditions and values of the Army well beyond war. The Army's soldiers experience professional development through institutional training, organizational experience, and personal growth but most importantly through leaders with expert knowledge and ethical behaviors. Currrent Immigration
Current immigration issues have continued to mirror past immigration issues. The U.S. continues to put immigrants at fault for tragedies that our country has endured. Unfortunately our country has experienced several tragedies within the last few years labeled as terrorism. For example, the latest tragedy was the Boston marathon bombing. The Boston Marathon bombings are bringing calls from the political right to delay comprehensive immigration reform and calls from the political right to speed it up. "The two suspects in the bombings, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, are ethnic Chechens who immigrated to the United States in 2002 after the government" (Moffett). It appears that the U.S. is always looking for ways to keep our borders sealed off from anyone crossing over into the U.S. as if immigrants will contaminate the land. "In April 2013, the U.S. Senate's bipartisan "Gang of Eight" released a comprehensive immigratio |

Carnival of Fury by William Ivy Hair
In his book, William Ivy Hair recounts race relations and the events leading up to the shooting spree of Robert Charles and the New Orleans Race Riot of 1900. Hair devotes most of his book examining the life of Robert Charles and presenting an alternative biography to the ones written in newspapers immediately after his death. In the first chapter, "Copiah", Hair asks the question "What sort of person was the actual Robert Charles, and why is his living and dying worth remembering?" (p. 2). Hair begins by examining the humble beginnings of Robert Charles. Charles was born shortly after the Civil War, most likely in Copiah County, Mississippi where he was raised. Charles was born into a family of sharecroppers living on a cotton plantation. The chapter goes on to discuss the family of Charles and the rural area where he was raised. When writing of the country landscape, Hair states that "any black or white boy would learn to use a rifle at an early age" |

What is a Fossil?
A fossil is evidence of past life found in a rock or other materials. A fossil is the remains of an animal or plant that has been preserved in rock and other materials, and it's the evidence of past life. Examples: a) Remains of plant or animal. b) Impression, such as footprint. c) In rare case only, a complete animal may be preserved, as: an insect trapped in amber (sap from a plant). Fossils can be created when the remains of animal or plant are covered by sediments (dust, sand or mud) and become part of the sedimentary rock that is formed. Index fossils: Fossils that lived over a comparatively short period of time and were widespread and can help determine the age of layer of rock. Fossils Formation a) An ammonite dies and falls to the bottom of the sea where it's covered by sediments and protected from being eating by other animals. The soft part of its body decay, leaving just the shell. b) More and more sediment covers and squeezed the shell. The shell may remain |

The Skulking Way of War by Patrick M. Malone
"The Skulking Way of War" is an examination of the culture of warfare of the Native Americans in Southern New England during the period of 1600-1677. This academic work is mainly a chronicle of the technological developments and advancements of the Southern New England Native tribes and how European influence and trade acted as the catalyst. Moreover, it investigates the military tactics used by the Natives during this period and how they developed over time with the arrival of the Europeans and how their influence transformed the Indian concept of war. At the beginning of this book, Malone states that technology has been the most influential component in shaping warfare from the beginning of time. It has had a dominant role in sculpting and evolving the way military's have fought and will fight wars between each other. Those who lack the technological superiority in battle will have the disadvantage, and most likely will be wiped out. Technology is a limiting factor. That is, warfar |

Overview: The Importance of Marketing
Marketing has existed for quite a long time on our planet. It is believed that trading has been taking place on our planet as long as 15000 years ago and so has marketing. There are certain trends that shape the way we conduct business. These business trends if studied carefully help companies determine the way they should approach marketing when it comes to its implementation in their business model. The companies can increase the chances of success by approaching the marketing in the right way. There are many reasons due to which marketing means a lot to me but I specifically think that it is the very core of the business because it allows companies and firms to sell their manufactured products and generate revenue for them, without marketing that would be almost impossible. Marketing and Consumers Marketing revolves around consumers. Any product developed by a firm would either be categorized as a need or want. Simpler everyda |

Facebook, Relationships and Divorce
Facebook is a very common way of communication. It serves multiple purposes, whether it is to talk with family and friends, make new friends, or even as a dating service. Facebook serves many different purposes. Since the twenty first century, social networking has increased exponentially and has brought up many great and not so great issues. One negative topic is that Facebook is consistently in the media. Facebook is shown as a negative sign in the media because "Facebook causes 1 in 5 divorces"(Bialik 2011). So while Facebook continues to grow into a multi-billion dollar company, it is really causing many young children and beloved couples to separate in divorce? There are three reasons for this immense industry to tear apart a relationship and cause the divorce rate to increase. Facebook makes it easy to meet other people, it promotes getting reacquainted with people from the past, and it leads to rekindling feelings from past relationships. When thinking of socia |

Applications of a Conic Section
Conic sections are a group of curves which are generated by slicing a cone with a plane. If the plane is tilted parallel to the slope of the cone, the cut produces a parabola. When a parabola is expressed in Cartesian coordinates, the equation is a second order polynomial. This curve is commonly found in nature, engineering applications and architecture. The study of projectile motion is a real life application of the parabolic conic section. Soccer balls, divers, missiles and airplanes follow perfect parabolic trajectories if the air resistance is neglected. Garden hoses and fountains discharge water droplets whose trajectory is also described by a parabolic motion (Serway & Jewett, 2007). The projectile (ball, airplane, droplet) moves under the influence of gravity, which for simplicity is assumed to be constant. Thus, it is possib |
