Determining Concentrations: Spectrophotometer

Introduction Spectrophotometry is defines to be the quantitative measurement of the reflection or transmission properties of a material as a function of wavelength. Spectrophotometry is a great asset to have in chemistry it involves the use of a spectrophotometer. A spectrophotometer is a photometer which is a device that is used for the measurement of light and its intensity. The spectrophotometer measures the intensity as a function of the light, wavelength. The information gained from Spectrophotometry can be used to study the relationship between the amount of light absorbed and the concentration of the chemical substance. Therefore from that information and by figuring out the amount of light absorbed at two different wave lengths of a substance you can determine the molarity of the solute in the substance. The objective of this experiment was to use Beers Law to determine the concentration of the red and yellow dye in the u unknown. Part one of the experiment main objective

1.) Chapter 21, Review Question What were the major policy initiatives of the New Deal in the Hundred Days? Some of the major policy initiatives of the New Deal in the first Hundred Days included the Emergency Banking Act, The National Industrial Recovery Act, The Economy Act, and Agricultural Adjustment Act. The Emergency Banking Act was passed on March 9, 1933 in order to "provide help to banking systems on the verge of collapse."(Foner 762) The act provided funds to threatened banking systems. In addition, the Glass-Steagall Act disallowed commercial banks from involvement in the stock market because of unlawful practices that led to the stock market crash. Also, President Roosevelt "severed the link between the country's currency and gold reserves," thus allowing banks to create as much money as they wished.(762) As a result, not a single bank failed in 1936. Another important initiative of the New Deal was the National Industrial Act which helped to stabilize the e

Ethics In Information Security

The four laws I have chosen to discuss are the Massachusetts 201 CMR 17 (aka Mass Data Protection Law), the The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). The Massachusetts 201 CMR 17 (aka Mass Data Protection Law) The Massachusetts data protection law is legislation that stipulates security requirements for organizations that handle the private data of residents. The law is more formally known as "Standards for The Protection of Personal Information of Residents of the Commonwealth" (or 201 CMR 17.00). Similar legislation is under consideration in most other states. The Massachusetts data protection law includes requirements for: Encryption of personal data Retention and storage of both digital and physical records Network security controls (firewalls, for example) Risk management policies and practices Employee training Adequate documentation of data

On the Morning of Christ's Nativity

Not only that there will be a redemption, but that there must be a redemption act present in several ways in John Milton's poem "On the Morning of Christ's Nativity". The redemption act--not being a reaction of God to Humanity's Fall, for such a dependency on Humanity by God is not in keeping with the absolute and divine nature of the Creator--is significant in this poem not necessarily for its bringing Humanity into its divine inheritance, but rather for its greater purpose of fulfilling the Creator's original plan. Man, who exists in this fallen world, would desire immediate communion with the divine state if he could but conceive of it. Milton, who exercises his Reason, that heavenly faculty, albeit tainted by the Fall, that allows him at least some conception of what that heavenly reality is like. This inkling that Milton gets sends him into an enraptured climax in which he speculates and fantasizes about an imminent Heaven on Earth that

Abstracts of Welfare Reform

Brookings Papers on Economic Activity Publish date:September 22, 2010 Author:Bitler, Marianne P.; Hoynes, Hilary W. The 1996 welfare reform led to sweeping changes to the central cash safety net program for families with children. Along with other changes, the reform imposed lifetime time limits for receipt of cash welfare, effectively ending its entitlement nature for these families. Despite dire predictions, previous research has shown that program caseloads declined and employment increased, with no detectible increase in poverty or worsening of child well-being. We reevaluate these results in light of the severe 2007-09 recession. In particular, we examine how welfare reform has altered the cyclical response of caseloads and family well-being. We find that use of food stamps and non-cash safety net program participation have become significantly more responsive to the economic cycle after welfare reform, rising more when unemployment increases. By contrast, we find no evidence

The Alter Ego of Chris McCandless

What exactly is an alter ego? An alter ego can be defined in many ways. Wikipedia defines it as "a second self", which is believed to be distinct from a person's normal or original personality. The term was coined in the early nineteenth century when dissociative identity disorder was first described by psychologists. A person who has an alter ego is said to lead a double life. A distinct meaning of alter ego can be found in literary analysis, wherein it describes characters in different works who are psychologically similar, or a fictional character whose behavior, speech or thoughts intentionally represent those of the author. It's also used to design the best friend of another character in a story. Similarly, the term alter ego may be applied to the role or persona taken on by an actor or by other types of performers." There are many reasons why a person would create an alter ego. Some people can be unhappy with the lifestyle they are currently living within a society

Corporate Social Initiative

QUESTION 1 Yes, I think it is a good idea for companies to use CSI to promote their corporate image. The reason being is that companies, especially big companies spend huge amounts of money on CSI programs to help uplift and improve the way of life of people in the community. So at the same time while doing this, they can benefit as well by improving the way people view the company. Companies should also invite other businesses to help and support their CSI program, through newspaper articles or through the radio. When people hear or see these advertisements, they will not only become aware of the company's CSI program but also see them being proactive by taking a step further by inviting other businesses to contribute to bettering the community. Therefor not only does the company's image benefit from CSI but also the company's benefits from improved community relationship, improved employee loyalty and involvement, government recognition as well as increases customer

Short Story Sample

Ever since that night, Phil became anxious, scared and even paranoid. It was the week after his high school graduation and he was headed to the school of his dreams. He wanted to celebrate. He and his brother talked about going on a trip to Mount Blanc, which was considered to be the most beautiful mountain in the world, and now they were finally able to go. However, they were in for a turn of events. As soon as Phil and his brother arrived in the Alps, they went on a bus to go to the mountain. On the way there, Phil noticed that his brother was wearing a necklace similar to the one that his grandfather wore before he left for battle. "Tommy, where did you get that necklace?" "It was given to me by grandpa before he left for..." Before he could finish the sentence, the bus hit an object on the road and spun into the side of a bridge. "Tommy! Tommy! Wake up! We have to go!" Tommy lay there motionless. His seat-belt was jammed. As Phil tried to relea

The Ultimate Gothic Novel: Wuthering Heights

Emily Bronte's novel Wuthering Heights is the story of Heathcliff, a dark outsider who falls in love with a girl named Catherine. The reader soon finds out that the once calm and conservative Heathcliff becomes a revengeful and spiteful person who rages at the obstacles that keep him from being with Catherine. Wuthering Heights contains supernatural events, the change of weather by how things unfold and a series of violent events; all of which make the book a Gothic novel. Throughout the book, there are several appearances and conversations of the ghost. During Mr. Lockwood's first night at Wuthering Heights, he encounters the ghost of Catherine. In the middle of the night, he wakes up to what he believes is the sound of fir branches scratching at the window; however, when he gets a closer look, he realizes that it is "the fingers of a little, ice-cold hand" (24). This is the first time a ghost appears in the novel. At another instanc

Technology and Language

?Language and words are the most important intangible things we have as humans. Having the ability to communicate abstract ideas with others by making sounds with our mouths is what sets us apart from other Earth-walking animals, and is quite incredible when you think about it. However, when the times change, language changes right with it. We are now in what is called the "Age of Technology" and the major increase in use of the internet, mobile devices and TV has created a whole new set of words that are being looked at as detrimental to traditional language. I do not think the language of new media is corrupting communication but helping, and the idea that it is helping comes from a bias towards younger people. People are generally afraid of change. So it's understandable why someone who g

Moral Theories of Utilitarianism

Utilitarianism is one of the most widely debated moral theories. Although its principles, to some, are considered harsh, many actions and decisions we make on a daily basis contain some degree of utilitarian principles. Whether it is telling a white lie to spare another's feelings or punish criminals to deter crimes, we are practicing utilitarian principles. That is, we judge the morality of an action by the consequences it has on the people involved. A consequentialist theory, sought to maximize the good, utilitarianism provokes both plausible and implausible arguments. Jeremy Bentham is considered to have fathered the theory, as he was the first philosopher to outline the theory. John Stuart Mill would later detail the theory. Their philosophies have prominently influenced social reform and remain deeply influential today. Its main principle is the principle of utility or as Mill called it, the greatest happiness principle. Bentham asserted in his principle of utility that

Virtual Education

During the 1980's, a public school system established to serve a large military population created a distance learning program. The goal of this program was to increase curricular options for students and provide opportunities for students who were experiencing scheduling conflicts in high schools. In order to expand online learning opportunities for eligible students, this school system decided to launch a fully accredited, diploma-granting, comprehensive virtual high school. Virtual schools are increasingly becoming a permanent fixture in the K-12 educational systems in the United States and Canada. Although there are many tangible and promising benefits virtual schools

Managing a Toyota Recall

The three distinct types of responses I found that fall within the current and critical stages are: 1) a focus on updating customers as a united front on the recalls as well as attempting to regain its customer's trust through the recalls and focus on past performance; 2) Toyota's apology, although it was a masked apology that exuded confidence by explaining its superior technology; and 3) Toyota's focus on being defensive in its responses to attacks from media outlets and government agencies. When analyzing the press releases, the first theme that emerged was that Toyota spoke with a united front. Toyota did this by using similar or the exact same quotes throughout the three month crisis response, as well as standing together as Toyota to resolve the issues. Toyota employees were all told the same things and presented the same stance on each topic of discussion regarding the crisis. On the surface, the Toyota pres

The Banking Concept of Education

In "The Banking Concept of Education", Paulo Freire dwells on the idea that a teachers task is to simply fill a student's mind and that it hurts their education with the banking concept. I will argue that by adding real life examples as well as experiences to our early education, it will solve the problem of student abstract on education as well as the teachers way of teaching. That is because real life examples will make the school teachers ideas more clearer and students will be motivated to engage more on their learning process. In "The Banking Concept of Education" one of Paulo Freire's main idea expresses thoughts on how "[e]ducation is suffering from narration sickness"(318) due to the relationship between the teacher and the student. Freire believes that the Banking Method of Education simply "fills" 'the students with the conte

My Life Playing Golf

She laid a towel on the freshly mowed grass and gazed at the other players swinging, ball after ball, under the balmy sunlight. The practice range was unbearably solemn and not a word was spoken. Suddenly, in the distant, she heard a man's voice "Taylor!" – it was her coach Matt yelling at her to get back to work. "Okay Matt!" she yelled back. Taylor, along with the other players, were preparing for the biggest, life-changing two days of their lives – the LPGA Qualifier. This was in Vancouver, a city where it rains for over half the year – not exactly "golf-friendly." This was a mere obstacle for her though: she practiced under all weather conditions and even taught herself hitting balls in the snow. Taylor was only a junior in high school while her playing partners would already be engaged or even married: she definitely possessed the proverbial "thing that could not be taught." However, Taylor's success up to this po

Incentive Award Program - Ford Motor Company

As the Human Resources Development Manager for FORD motor company's USA branch, I have identified potential difficulties with the company moving forward. These difficulties are as a direct result of the downturn in financial stability coupled with the ever increasing cost of fuel. To tackle these problems and keep our branch of Ford retaining maximum level of profit I intend to introduce a pay for performance incentive awards program. After conducting a needs assessment of our organisation it is clear that we need to address any poor production performance of our employees to tackle the current financial climate we find ourselves in. The ways I identified the need to implement this training is by collecting performance data over a 6 month period, and assess these numbers directly alongside the operating costs of the organisation. Once I had this data, I compared our performance directly to rival companies and also companies who are currently running a pay for performance incentive awa

Presidential Elections and Allegory of the Cave

In Plato's "Allegory of the Cave," prisoners waste their entire lives chained in an underground cavern, nurtured into deeming that shadows' wavering in front of them is a reality. Socrates presents the allegory of the hardship of grasping reality. One prisoner manages to break off the chains to escape from the cave, only to realize that shadows he had been observing his entire life are in fact, not reality. According to Socrates, this realization is not an immediate acknowledgment by the prisoner, because he states, "He will be unable to see them [reality], at least at first" (516). Furthermore, according to Socrates people trust their senses too much and believe the world [politics] as it is to our site. As modern-day presidential (marionette) candidates are manipulated by their parties, which are manipulated by lobbyists and firms at large with billion of green fuel and imprisoned citizens are nurtured into believing campaigning propagandas

The Epidemic of Bullying

With the help of their fame, Lady GaGa and Demi Lovato have all began to come out and express encounters they experienced with bullying. They have helped to awaken America to one of the most talked about crimes that is sweeping our nation. However, Ryan Halligan was not famous but his story has touched many. Ryan was a victim of bullying. He first started being bullied in the fifth grade because of his poor physical condition. By the time he made it to the seventh grade, Ryan was begging his parents to home school him or even move. During that year, boys at school started taunting him in instant messenger with rumors that he was gay. Ryan then asked his father to teach him how to fight. Ryan got into an altercation with the bully. After that the bully stopped and Ryan thought that things were getting better. But then over the summer before his eighth grade year he started working on establishing a relationship with a popular girl from his school online. When he returned to school t

The Pitfalls of Thinking - The Road

The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, is a story of a post-apocalyptic world seen through the eyes of a father and son, while traveling in a seemingly desolated environment searching for a civilized society. The Road portrays what is left of the world and its inhabitants in a cold, unforgiving, and depressing manner. Traveling the road the father and son strive to carry the fire with them as they keep pushing on through what seems to be a futile and endless journey. Many characters in The Road are depicted as savages who have resorted to barbaric and cannibalistic methods in order to survive the environment they are placed in, which no longer contains any type of plant growth or animal food source, except humans. While traveling down the road, many of the characters in the story have resorted to survival by any means necessary, in doing so they have forgotten what it means to be human, thus creating many pitfalls in their thinking. The father in The Road creates many errors in his thinking th

Catholicism in Ireland

Christianity is and has been the largest religion in Ireland and for a long period of time has been one of the most popular religions around the world. Most denominations of Christianity in Ireland are organized into two parts; the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Current day Ireland has shown that in Northern Ireland most of the population adheres to the Roman Catholic Church. Ireland is currently under the spiritual leadership of the Pope Benedict XVI. There are great contributors to the Catholic Church in Ireland to how it came to be which are as followed; Celtic Christianity, Irish monasteries, Missionaries Abroad in Ireland, the Irish Reformation, and the Translation of the Bible into Irish. Without these contributors the Catholic Church in Ireland would be changed dramatically. Christianity came to Ireland by the early 5th century, and spread through the works of early missionaries such as Palladius, and Saint Patrick. In fact, Christian worship had reached pagan Ire

Brief Overview of Albert Speer

i. Haute Bourgeeoisie refers to the upper middle class. Albert Speer was born on 19 March 1905 in Mannhein, the son of prosperous upper middle-class family of master builders – his father was one of the busiest architects in the city.?Speer was educated at the Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe, completing his architectural studies in Munich and Berlin. It was at Berlin University that he first heard Hitler speak in 1930 and came under his hypnotic spell. In January 1931 he became a member of the National Socialist Party, denying, as he subsequently put in his memoirs, "my own past, my upper-middle-class origins and my previous environment. ii. Having a father who was a successful architect in Mannheim, and a mother who came from a wealthy family you would say that the Speer family was more than well off. Albert Speer was the

Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town

"Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town" is a poem written by E.E. Cummings that uses a play with words to show the live of the everyday person in a town. Cummings uses the word anyone to describe a man and the word no one to describe a woman. While writing about the lives of these people in this nameless town, Cummings goes a great job showing the modernist time period writing style. Cummings shows equality, science and progress in his poem "Anyone Lived In a Pretty How Town" making it fit perfectly in the American modernism literature. Equality was a major factor during the modernist time period. Men and women wanted to be treated equally in almost all aspects of life. In this poem, Cummings shows equally in the second stanza by stating,

An Apolitical Food Problem

?The world food problem has been a growing concern that the humankind faces in the process of development today, and key issues such as malnutrition and starvation have most commonly been identified with the poor in underdeveloped countries (Warnock, 1987). An unprecedented rate of population growth outstripping the food production that will lead to an increase in famines has been a popular misconception relating to the world food problem (Radha, 1976), and Robert Malthus noted this similar idea, which is described as "Malthusian focus". Contrary to Malthus second theory, defined as the "Malthusian pessimism", a shocking fact unveils that despite having more than sufficient food to supply to every mankind today, global hunger has now been intensified (Bennett, 1987), therefore questioning the real cause for the rise in famines we are observing. Environmental threats such as drought and flood have also been alleged to contribute to famine issues in the world. However
