Walt Whitman - Short Poem Critiques
I found it difficult to understand most of Walt Whitman's poems as I do to most poems in general. So I narrowed them down to two of the poems that I liked. In the first poem I read, "Song of Myself", Whitman jumps from topic to topic in almost every other line. The poem gave me a problem understanding where he was going with his poems as a speaker. I do have an understanding though, that Whitman himself is the speaker (as we call all poets)in this poem. Whitman pretty much declares it is "Walt Whitman Day," it's the celebration of his life. He embraces the outdoors with this simple line, "The atmosphere is not perfume, it has no taste of the distillation, it is odorless, It is for my forever, I am in l |

Gun Control: Stopping Violent Criminals?
Every day, America is becoming a more violent place. It has gotten to the point where innocent people are attacked for even a small amount of money, young girls are aggressively assaulted and raped, and innocent people are shot because of criminals killing each other over simple disputes. These criminals are extremely detrimental to our society and are oppressing innocent people who have to fear for their life everyday. America began because citizens were fed up with being oppressed. Ever since Americas beginnings citizens have always had to protect ourselves against our oppressors. However, some people want high regulations on guns thinking that it will lower the number of gun crimes committed in the United States. These positions are noble however, it is necessary to realize that being able to defend yourself is a right that has been set in stone since this country was founded and even if guns were removed criminals would still get them and still create havoc in this nation. Favoritism, Privileges, Benefits and Race
Take two high school students who want to go to college. One has a 3.9 grade point average and a 27 on their S.A.T. While the other student has a 3.0 and got a 21 on their S.A.T. Which student would you expect for a college to want? Would you be surprised to find out that the student with the lower S.A.T. score and lower grade point average not only got into the school over the other individual but they were also given more in financial aid then those who were in lower economic class and those who have had better scores.? I thought the reason we go to college is so that we will diligently apply ourselves to our studies, recognizing that our principal purpose as a student at a University is to obtain the best education of which we are capable. Why would a college institution do this? Why would a college not admit the student who has worked harder than the other to achieve good grades and has a better chance to improve the overall university? The answer is simple, race. Race is an ins |

The War on Marijuana
?Did you know tobacco use killed an estimated 443,000 people and another 8.6 million live with a serious illness caused by smoking tobacco products? Also, the abuse of alcohol kills an estimated 75,000 people each year? Alcohol and tobacco making the top 5 reasons people died in the U.S. Since the beginning of time not one person has ever overdosed on marijuana. Even though there is an estimate of 25 million regular users. Still it is viewed in the America as one of biggest fights in the drug war that we are having. But legalizing marijuana can help more than the government thinks. It will help clear the prison of space from inmates, help our economy, and Medicinal use. The United States has more people in jail than any other country including China that has a population that is 4 times bigger than us. Of the people in jail half of them are in there for repeat drug use of marijuana. Every year about one million people are arrested and sent to jail for having or selling marijuana. Las |

Unconstitutional: The War on Our Civil Rights
?The terrorist act of 911 led to pure panic in the United States that forced the government to act upon future terrorist attacks. With the goal of making the country safer the government looked over the patriotic act, it had not been passed before but that was about to change. The act was passed by President Bush almost secretly and without the approval of congress. The patriotic act's goal was "Uniting and strengthening America by providing appropriate tools required to intercept and obstruct terrorism" but the government contradicted its self because this act was not "uniting" or "strengthening" America, it was separating and destroying the equality and freedom our country holds with violation of rights and discrimination of stereotypes. Business Plan of Caledonia Products
The process of accurately determining which capital budgeting decisions would be the most advantageous for any company requires a multifaceted approach. Caledonia Products is no exception. There is no yardstick or measurement which can single-handedly predict which investments are the best in any given situation. However, there are several approaches that can be used together to provide guidelines for investment decisions in regards to Caledonia Products. In considering the introduction of the new product we discussed, Caledonia Products should focus on incremental after-tax free cash flows rather than accounting profits. The firm has the ability to immediately reinvest cash flows, whereas accounting profits are shown when they are earned rather than when the funds are actually received. Timing is an important aspect of capital budgeting decisions particularly when considering the introduction of a new product. One must determine what the cash flow would be with, as well as without |

Crime and Punishment - Love and Redemption
Through the Russian design of the characters featured in Crime and Punishment, Feodor Dostoevsky develops the idea of purity redeeming the mortally damned through self-sacrifice. The reader receives a direct source of rehabilitation curving Raskolnikov's deteriorating mental state through the eyes of his subconscious love Sonia. Sonia and Raskolnikov share several similarities, which preserve through their interactions with one another. Both characters harbor self-sacrificial characteristics, both struggle to find meaning in their corrupt lives, and both claim an unfulfiling existence, but oddly enough the two characters find solace in each other's presence while putting aside Raskolnikov's constant religious berating towards Sonia's only outlet for hope. The desire to help those that surround oneself more than the wish to help just oneself requires an unnatural state of mind among the human populous, but also easily brought on through pressures by society, poli |

Working With and Empowering Indigenous Communities
The powerpoint attached to this report on Indigenous service provision in Kalgoorlie (Goldfields), demonstrates that a plethora of knowledge can be obtained prior to engaging with any community by looking beneath the surface. A practitioner must make an effort to fully understand the historical issues, contemporary challenges, and dilemmas of the Indigenous community first. They must appreciate that Indigenous languages, cultures, history, political influences vary in some contexts significantly. This report is detailed in four sections that I advocate should be considered as a practitioner in building relationships with Indigenous communities, these are: - Research - Dialogue - Reflection - Empowerment RESEARCH BEST PRACTICE I hold the view that practitioners must become empowered by drilling down to the central issues and evaluating any previous work that could be used as best practice. Utilizing the best practices can save both time and money and assist improvement in practic |

My Life as a Teenage Mother
Hi! My name is Karina Rosales I am 22 years old and I am a teen parent. I was 13 years old when I found out I was pregnant. At first I was in denial until a pregnancy test confirmed it. I could not believe what that pregnancy test said because I never planned to be pregnant or had even thought of. I always thought being young and pregnant couldn't happen to me; also I had little information about how to prevent pregnancy and even less about being a parent. When I told my mother that I was pregnant, she was in shock - she couldn't believe it. Eventually, she accepted what was happening and was there to support me. My father, however, didn't speak to me when he found out. I continued to go to school as an eighth grade student at Spring Woods Middle School. I was the only pregnant eighth grader and the other students stared at me and that made me |

The Importance of Writing Well
Some time ago, there was a TV program in Korea that surveys students who go to Harvard University. The topic was 'which ability do you want to improve most?' The result was very interesting. I would think the answer is IT knowledge or leadership. Unexpectedly, the answer was 'writing ability'. At that time, I thought that it is very strange because the students who are called geniuses chose writing ability as the first thing that they want to improve most, not advanced technology. However, looking back on it now, that was quite a stupid idea. The Harvard University students knew that it would not be easy to express their thinking in writing, and writing was essential in every study. What I felt most during this semester was writing was base in every study, and almost every study needed to write. Actually, we are written a lot of writing for whatever reason. Truly, I have written so many essays, journals and articles. Even if I have so many experiences to write |

Different Conceptions of Time
Time...it means so much but yet it sounds so small. The view of time to many is how long it takes to do something or how long it's been since you've been with someone. But how important is time in your day to day world? The actual definition of time is, "Plan, schedule, or arrange when (something) should happen or be done" (Houghton, 1997). However, in many different cultures the perception of time can vary and causing many who aren't used to it extremely confused. "It's believed that westerners tend to define punctuality using precise measures of time in other cultures, time can be measure by significantly longer intervals" (Levy, 2013). Time and punctuality is especially different between The United States and Brazil. Being born in Brazil I can relate to the idea that time is perceived differently in both countries. "Travel guides warn that in Latin America "whenever is conceivably possible, the business of today is put off until tomorrow. In contrast, the co |

Emotional Trials of Veterans and Their Families
Many books, articles, or even essays that are read throughout one's life, can at times be slightly unclear about what precisely the main idea is or what the authors true purpose is for writing that text. Most people do not understand that every writer uses rhetorical strategies throughout their writing to make their text clear and understandable for the reader. These rhetorical strategies are particularly important because they help with the clarity of complex ideas and assist the writer in getting their point across. In doing so, writers are able to make their text more effective for a wider range of people to read. In the article "Iraq, Afghanistan War Veterans Struggle With Combat Trauma," by David Wood, and in the short story, "Gold Star," by Siobhan Fallon, the authors use numerous amounts of rhetorical tools to help guide the reader through the text. While "Gold Star" is a short story about a wife who has lost her husband due to the war and &quo |

Highland Park Family Services
I live in the city of Highland Park, home to 57,566 residents, predominantly of Latino descent by the 1970's. Highland Park is a historic neighborhood in Northeast Los Angeles. It is inhabited by a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic groups and it is with in these groups that drugs, gangs and violence run rapid. Since the year 2010, Highland Park has seen some revitalization in its neighborhood; due to tougher gang injunctions and restoration of craftsman home. A company who has seen the highs and lows of this community is Optimist Youth and Family Services. Optimist Youth and Family Services opened their doors in 1906 when Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Strickland took in an orphaned nephew to their farm just outside the northern city limits of Los Angeles. Another boy - a ward of the court - arrived in the same year. By 1908 there were 13 boys living on the farm. The Strickland's supported the home by selling dairy products and chickens raised on their farm. He purchased the five-acre Strickl |

Analyzing Policies for Juvenile Sex Offenders
1. What is the identified need or social problem? When we think of a child molesters we think of an adult and there are many adult child molesters. However, adolescents are responsible for a large number of rapes and child molestation cases. A study in 2003 found that adolescents were responsible for about one-half of the child molestation cases and about one-fifth of all rapes (Aguirre, Regina T.P. (2009). In this paper, I will attempt to identify the lack of service and care to under age sex offenders in LA County. Many of the client's reviewed in this paper have been diagnosed with mental illnesses; drug addictions and the majority live in single parent households. Many people are unaware of the large epidemic of adolescent sex offenders. The definitions vary from state to state, but according to Shaw and Longo, sexually abusive behavior-juvenile or otherwise-is contact that is sexual in nature and that occurs without consent, without equality, and as a result of coercion, ma |

Types of Freedom
What is freedom? I do not know if I am sure of what freedom is yet. I believe that I have freedom, but am I really free? Freedom is one of the most important things a person can have. But the question is even though we think we are free, do we really have freedom? And if we do not have any freedom at all, if things are predetermined, then how can we be held responsible for our actions? For example, we are not held accountable for obeying the laws of gravity. Freedom generally means the absence of all unreasonable restraint. But isn't this a little bit general? In his book on being free, Frithjof Bergmann outlined what he called our "schizophrenic view of freedom". The first side of this view is that freedom is wonderful. I mean freedom is what makes America the place everyone wants to be. This view says not only are we free but we aspire to be free, so there is a small dilemma. The second view, is that freedom is dreadful. It is scary to make decisions that will aff |

Bearing Arms Responsibly
Gun control is familiar to everyone in society, especially with our youth and it's become one of the most debatable issues in the prevailing society. America's youth seem to be more interested in the gun control issue than youth of previous generations; this is due to the recent tragic crimes that are being committed in schools, malls, places of business and homes. Although many try to argue for stricter gun laws, I feel that guns are only as bad as the person behind the trigger. Stricter gun laws will only drive guns in to the hands of criminals, and I believe that individual citizens have the right to bare arms and protect himself or herself and their property. The first rule of weapon safety is to never point a gun at anything you do not intend |

Repairing the Reputation of Marijuana
Marijuana has a very bad reputation, due to people who abuse the drug. This substance can be used in many positive ways. Such as: medicinal use, booming the economy, and by saving tax dollars while increasing tax revenue. Therefore, Marijuana should be legal in all 50 states(Thesis). Marijuana is beneficial to certain human aliments such as nausea, anxiety, depression, insomnia, people suffering from cancer, arthritis, and many others. By having Marijuana legal, not only will people use it for recreational purposes, it will also be more convenient for patients to get their medicine. Marijuana is a less harsh drug compared to other medical drugs that are used. It is a less toxic drug, therefore it causes less harm to the body. Patients who either took marijuana pills or smoked marijuana have had an improved immune system, as documented by Donalds Abrams, MD(Authority). A former patient, Alyssa Godwell, suffe |

The Internet and Anonymity
The essay "The Growing Cowardice of Online Anonymity" by Richard Bernstein talks about the wave of anonymous comments made possible by the internet. Bernstein said that JuicyCampus.com has become a virtual bathroom wall upon which college students across the country scrawl slurs, smears, and secrets, true or otherwise, about their classmates. Bernstein gives an example that one day the site asked for replies to the question: who are the sluttiest girls at Cornell? Quickly, there were fo |

The Great Philospopher, Susanne Langer
Most people are familiar with the greatest minds in philosophy such as Aristotle, Plato, or even John Locke. In reality, most well-known philosophers happen to be male. Women philosophers such as Hannah Arendt and Susanne Langer have faded from textbooks and have been somewhat forgotten as the decades have passed. They have not always been credited for their work. This is due to the heavy oppression that they received from the men of their time who often took credit for the work of women. Women were often looked down on and were sometimes unauthorized to have political or educational rights, so they went discredited for their work. However, unlike most women, philosopher Susanne Langer did not let men dictate her actions or educational proceedings. Susanne Langer (1895-1985) was born and raised in New York, the daughter of two German immigrants. Langer attended a private school on the upper west side, and when she graduated, her educational struggles began. Her father held the belie |

The Right to Freedom Of Religion
"You don't get harmony when everybody sings the same note" (Doug Floyd) Harmony is diversity. In music, people sing different notes combined creating a complete, layered sound. In life, its the same way. All different types of people, religions, views, and opinions are what make the world what it is today. The First Amendment guarantees us the freedom of speech, religion, press and free assembly. If it wasn't for this amendment we would not be able to have freedom of religion - meaning we would have to believe in a god or power that the government would tell us to believe in. This amendment allows us to worship freely and is one of the benefits of being an American. But what happens when someone steps in and says that someone praising their god is wrong? Should they be punished or is it their right to worship what or who they choose? What happens when one person praising their god is offensive to other people? Sexual Exploitation During Slavery
During Antebellum period, slaves were heavily centralized to South. African Americans were enslaved on small farms, large plantations, in cities and towns, inside homes, out in the fields, and in industries and transportation. Slaves, who were treated like part of the owners' properties, could be bought, and trade and were exploited physically, sexually, and socially. Only a few enslaved women who were able to read and write had depict their lives as slaves in their narrative works that have summarizes but inadequately the prevalent condition of enslaved women. Thousands of heinous exploitation's' stories went to the grave along with the slaves and the slavery system. However, the narratives and interviews with former slaves by the some of the historians have well documented the sexual exploitation of enslaved women such as Harriet Jacobs. Such documents give us the answers about how the enslaved women were sexually exploited. Were they physically abused? If so, to what exten |

Privacy and Freedom
The Fourth Amendment search and seizure is mainly about privacy, and has been implemented to protect against unreasonable searches and seizures by State or Federal law enforcement agencies. This amendment has been changed many times to suit the needs of the people. There are unlawful searches going on every day by sheriffs, police officers, undercover agents and other city officials. Some of those are searching cars, mobile homes, trash cans and even cell phones that are meant to be conducted with consent. The Fourth Amendment states that: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. Good and Evil: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a novel that's about an adult male man having a good side (Dr. Jekyll) and having a bad side (Mr. Hyde). This novel shows the readers that a genuinely nice man transforms into an evil person with a corrupted mind; Mr. Hyde was Dr. Jekyll's unusual, twin self. Hyde is obviously the bad guy because he is a murderer, and the position he is in pursues Jekyll to commit suicide in order to kill Hyde before he is convicted for his publicly demeaning crime or before goes out to kill someone else again. In this novel along with Edgar Allen Poe's The Cask of Amontillado shows obvious uncanny throughout both stories. Each story's use of uncanny is concurred with a threatening and dark theme of good vs evil as for both stories it intensifies the plot and develops the heartless actions by both of the antagonists. In the case of Dr. Jekyll, it gives a very creepy yet fascinating representation of a normal man's everyday struggle with his inner self. In the oth |
