Interpretations of The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Cormac McCarthy, author of "The Road," was raised Roman Catholic and attended Catholic High School in Knoxville, Tennessee. He then went to the University of Tennessee in 1951-52 where he majored in liberal arts. McCarthy joined the U.S. Air Force in 1953 where he served four years, spending two of them in Alaska, where he hosted a radio show. He has written ten novels of various genres; Southern Gothic, Western, and Post-Apocalyptic. In 2006, Alfred A. Knopf published "The Road," which won the Pulitzer Prize for literature. McCarthy was granted an interview with Oprah Winfrey, who had chosen "The Road" for her Book Club. Not only did it win a Pulitzer Prize, but it also won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. McCarthy was truly one of America's great writers! "The Road" opens after an apocalyptic event. The first few pages of the novel situate us in the landscape of ash and isolation. The boy and the man are the main characters and McCarthy never discloses their given |

How to Build Resilience
Resilience is the ability to withstand stress. Having resilience means you are capable of adapting to and overcoming changes. If something severe happens, particularly if it was unexpected and something beyond our control, our resilience is tested. The more resilient people are, the better able they will bounce back and keep going. Resilience to stress is not the same as resistance to it because resistance implies the there is no response to the stress ("This Emotional Life"). Five factors are key to resilience: positive outlook, spirituality, active coping, learning and making meaning, and accepting your limits. A positive outlook is key to resilience because it allows us to think positive (glass half full) and understand that setbacks are part of life. Problems are not always avoidable, so resilience allows us to remain open and flexible in the face of change (Cherry). To develop a positive outlook we should use people who are great at dealing with stress as role models. |

Global Economic Prospects
Global Economic Prospects are key factors to the overall financial outlook of the global economy. There are multiple groups that contribute reports to the world relative to how the economy is progressing. Most reports include information regarding the GDP, GNP, inflation rates, interest rates, unemployment rates, stock/bonds market pricing, real estate market, and new construction. Many outlook groups focus their attention on a short term assessment; keeping their projections based simply on the next year or two. There are other groups that expand their predictions and look into many years ahead. Many published economic reports separate economies depending on if they are considered (1) a developed or advanced economy, (2) an economy in transition or an emerging market, or (3) a developing economy. There is some discrepancy relative to what defines and emerging market and developing economy. This definition largely depends upon the group that is analyzing the data; one may deem a reg |

Business at the Pike Fish Market
The story "Fish!" begins with a narrative about the life of Mary Jane Ramirez and her work at the Pike Fish Market. Mary Jane moved from Los Angeles with her husband and two young children to Washington due to her husband's promotion within his company. Upon arriving in Washington, Mary Jane was confident that she would find a management job and she did. She began working with First Guarantee in the Operations Department as a manager. Mary Jane had a great work ethic – she was not the first one in or the last one to stay but her inbox was almost always empty when she left. Every department at First Guarantee passed their work through Mary Jane's department because they knew it would be done and done correctly and efficiently. There was another department in First Guarantee that received a lot of talk but not in a good way. The third floor was constantly the brunt of everyone's jokes. The most common reference used when speaking about the third floor was the &q |

Censorship: Banned Books
Throughout history, censorship has had a drastic role in affecting the world we live in. Censorship can be seen in various locations everyday in media, ranging from books to television. The debate on censorship would cover volumes of law books by itself. Censorship has the positive effect of protecting children from harmful influence, but it can also have negative effects. It suppresses the spread of ideas and new knowledge. The First Amendment, states "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." (Pilon, p. 13) Is this violated as soon as a child walks into a school? Censorship ca |

The Evolving Definition of Justice in Plato's Republic
Just as Polemarchus inherited the argument with Socrates concerning justice from his father, he also inherited a traditional definition of justice from Greek culture. Through their argument, Socrates shows Polemarchus that justice is more than just a balance of the pluses and minuses of debts; instead, Socrates illustrates that justice is a force that does good for all people. Through Polemarchus' changing definitions of justice throughout the argument, the reader's definition of justice also changes. In the end both Polemarchus and the reader come closer to grasping the true nature of justice. After taking over the argument, the first clear definition of justice Polemarchus presents is one given by the Greek philosopher, Simonides. It states, "that it is just to give to each what is owed"(331e). This definition is clearly part of the Greek ethos, and is similar to the definition of justice presented by his father, Cephalus. Socrates' counter to this definiti |

The Brutal Reign of Commodus
Some people claim that the emperor Commodus was one of the worst emperors in Roman history. Commodus was the son of Marcus Aurelius, who was a successful ruler in Roman history who set a precedent in which Commodus had to live up to. Commodus proved himself to be a dictator who was a very disengaged pleasure-seeking leader. Commodus was born on the thirty- first of August in in 161 A.D. in the town of Lanuvium, Rome. His father's physician, Galen, looked after Commodus. Auelius Galenus otherwise known as Claudius Galenus, better known as Galen of Pergamon, was an extremely conspicuous Roman physician, surgeon and philosopher. Marcus Aurelius was a Roman Emperor from the year 161 to 180 A.D. He ruled with Lucius Verus as a co-emperor from 161 until Venus' death in 169 A.D. He was the last of what is known as the "Five Good Emperors", and is also considered one of the most important philosophers. The Five Good Emperors is made up of Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoniu |

Socilization
?Throughout life, we're faced with the process of socialization by developing human capability and learning about the culture. The concept of socialization is that our actions are driven and learned by our culture. Socialization is also the foundation of personality, which we build by internalizing our surroundings. Through the lifelong process of socialization, society transmits culture from one generation to the next. This process is very important because it helps shape society into the future without stumbling upon confusion of what's right or wrong. Furthermore, socialization is a key factor in the life of humans and other animals alike because socialization is instrumental in the development of personality and community roles. While much of human personality is the result of our genes, the socialization process can mold one in a particular direction by encouraging specific beliefs and attitudes as well as selectively providing experiences. This process begins at birth when |

Exercise and Diet in Brazil
?Staying Fit with a Brazilian Diet Rio de Janeiro is a city known around the world for its beautiful people with great bodies. Whether it be a city tour guide, established businessman, or the concierge at the hotel desk, it seems like just about everyone in this city is trim and in good physical shape. People here are always prepared to look good out on the beach. However, the people eat terribly! Most people eat tons of red meats, loads of sugar, and pastries. But how do they eat all this junk and stay in such good shape? We will explore the dietary and exercise habits of the Brazilian people, from personal observation, to discover just how they stay in such good shape. Red meat is the meat of choice for the carioca (demonym for the people of Rio). They love it and, while there, a visitor can expect to eat it for all meals of the day. They also eat chicken, occasionally, but, ironically, they rarely eat fish. As stated by a city tour guide for Adventure World upon questioning of why |

Comparison: The Iliad and The Odyssey
"The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" are two of the earliest, surviving forms of European and Western literature. Some even have a theory that "The Odyssey" is the sequel to "The Iliad". Unlike many sequels in the present era, "The Odyssey" actually seems to be an improvement in some respects on the original, and stands quite well as an independent work. Though these two stories were written several years apart they have many similarities which may be the reason some believe "The Odyssey" is a sequel. Homer is known for being the author of both stories. Both stories take place over the course of ten years and many of the characters are alike but take different names depending on which story you're reading. "The Odyssey" makes reference at a number of points to the characters and events of "The Iliad", most notably to the death of Achilles. Although these two stories do seem very similar as far as chara |

College Students and Text Messaging
Abstract The purpose of this study was to find out how much college/university students use texting to communicate with friends and family. Relatively little research has been completed which explores the exploding use of cell phone text messaging as a primary communication mode in both friendships and familial relationships. This research also explores college students' use of text messaging to maintain relationships. Quantitative measures were used to determine the frequency of use of text messaging relative to other communication modes such as face to face, email, phone call, social networking and instant messaging. Relational closeness between relational partners was also measured between research subjects and their friends and family members and then analyzed for correlations with frequency of text messaging to those relational partners. Results showed the use of text messaging to be the favorite and most frequently used mode of communication among students whether communic |

Lessons Found in Antigone
It is said that "history repeats itself", meaning that today's society and government will do the same things as our ancestors did in the past. This also can be said about lessons that were once taught in the past. An example of lessons that are around or active in today's society and government can be found in the play "Antigone". The lessons of "Antigone" are still relevant today, these lessons are seen in the decisions of our government and society in general. Looking at the past and present, the way we treat others or deal with certain situations are still the same as they were in the past. Something that is seen in both the past and present is people in a new position of power that end up turning into a tyrant of some sort. The same can be said about Creon in "Antigone" when he became king after the death of Oedipus (Antigone's father) and the rightful heir Polynices (Antigone's brother). The fact that he would not let anyone bury and honor Polynices without being considered a traitor spe |

My Life and Hard Times by James Thurber
The autobiography, "My Life and Hard Times," written by James Thurber, is a demonstration of literary honesty at its best. Although the story often seems to defy logic due to its short and unchronological structure, exaggerated details and improbable situations, Thurber forges these flaws into an effective true story that is nearly void of ego. With applications of cartoon images and simple titles that help the reader navigate the segmented timeline, Thurber's informal approach to writing remains his greatest rhetorical prowess. Thurber sits on the edge of the literary chair with "My Life and Hard Times". It's a book of only one hundred pages, with at least ten of those filled with cartoon images. Why, then, is this book known as the "Jewel of English Writing" by many? (LongRobert) In his autobiography, James Thurber asks his audience to avoid getting tangled by his omissions in the text. For example, he frankly states in one of the chapters that "the other ser |

The Science of Cell Permeability
Most cells are freely permeable to water that diffuses through aquaporins (water channels) in the selectively permeable plasma membrane. This movement of water is termed osmosis and occurs in response to an osmotic pressure gradient across the cell membrane. The osmolality of a solution is the total concentration of particles of solute, measured by the number of osmotically active particles per kg-1 of water (Boron & Boulpaep, 2009). Osmolarity is the moles of osmotically active solute L-1. Osmolality and osmolarity are approximately equivalent for dilute solutions. For two solutions of the same osmolarity, the net movement of water across the semi-permeable membrane separating them is zero, and the solutions are said to be isosmotic. A solution with a higher osmolarity is hyperosmotic, and one with lower osmolarity is described as being hypoosmotic. The tonicity of a solution describes the effect of that solution on the volume of the cells suspended in it, and is sometimes referred |

Management and Leadership
The terms leadership and management are very similar. Quite often, an organization uses the terms leadership and management interchangeably, most likely because the two type of job functions overlap each other and do not have a clear distinction between them. Each role is tied to human interactions, personalities, and specific trait requirements. Most organizations utilize leaders and manager at various levels. Some will state that there is a clear difference between the two, while other state that leadership is one of the many characteristics of management. There are many differences between management and leadership. It has always been thought that an effective company is run by management. However, with all the recent changes in the world, many companies have come to learn and realize that leadership is much more important than basic management, because in many ways, management is no longer effective or efficient. The reasons for this are many, but advancements in technology and i |

Analyzing Psychological Disorders
A bio-psychologist who works to help people overcome anxiety, drug or alcohol dependency or mental illnesses needs patience, understanding, and knowledge. Many disorders may be missed during therapy sessions. So, in order to understand a patient's disorder or disease, a bio-psychologist must know all the underlying conditions, symptoms, characteristics and treatments of a wide variety of mental and emotional issues. Evaluating the way a person is behaving and then setting specific steps to help that person live with or overcome their problem(s) is only part of the work of a psychologist. Schizophrenia, Causes, and Treatments Understanding how biology can affect psychological activities and disorders is crucial in understanding how to effectively treat patients. Many people believe that schizophrenia is a disorder that affects only the destitute, which it is not. A disorder can affect anyone of any shape, size, or color. A very small percentage of the population is affected by t |

Assessments and Technology in Education
Most assessments done in school systems are done after a lesson is taught and is created to show only if a student has learned the material being presented. However, I believe that little is done to measure students progress during the learning process to help them learn better. I also believe that in today's society, we're not using technology as much as we should to develop and design new assessments both formative and summative. However, I believe that our current school systems have made some adjustments to utilize technology in assessment. For example, it helps us create more effective testing experiences and provide improvements in assessment. Also, technology helps teach us what we should be assessing in student learning. Today, students need to be tested on how they communicate in the normal world and the virtual cyber-world. Technology has presented an opportunity for students to learn from it. There is so much information on the internet these days, and students should |

Government and "1984" by George Orwell
Some of the world's government systems bear similarities to the one that George Orwell created in his book, "1984" as defined for us through the character of Winston Smith. Governments still spy on civilians in their homes, places of work, and through social media and even dictate what and what not to write. It is undeniable that 'we are kept in check.'(George, 1949) In his diary, Winston Smith describes a government that oversees every move of society. Every individual was under 24-hour surveillance and 'telescreens,' and microphones monitored whatever they did or say. Anyone that was overheard challenging "Big brother" (the party that ruled the state), or was cau |

Abnormal DNA Methylation in the Human Genome
The methylation of DNA serves as one of the most crucial epigenetic modifications of modern day genetics. Methylation and demethylation of DNA have profound effects on cellular differentiation and processes such as transcription, gene expression, chromatin structure, and suppression of invasive and unwanted genes. Many enzymes work coherently to regulate methylation activity, one of the main being DNA methyltransferase. Any disruptions in the methyltransferase pathway can lead to the modification of regular DNA methylation. The modification of these processes can lead to fatal diseases and various types of cancer. The two patterns in which atypical DNA methylation fall are hypermethylation and hypomethylation. Relevantly, the cancer genome is quite regularly marked by the hypermethylation of specific genes simultaneous to the decrease in 5-methyl cytosine levels (hypomethylation). Hypermethylation refers to the over methylation of some genes which results in the repression of transcr |

Working Mother's, Children and Child Care
The number of mothers who need to be the primary or secondary source of family income has increased over the years, creating a greater need for young children to be placed in out-of-home care. Sixty percent of mothers with children under age six worked in 2008 compared with 33% in 1975 (Ruhm, 2011). There are certain policies in place both at state and federal levels that alleviate some of the financial pressure. The most significant is the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which provides some parents the right to twelve weeks of unpaid leave following the birth of a child or for other reasons (Ruhm, 2011). However, compared to other countries, the United States is much more inadequate in encouraging mothers to stay home. In 2006 the United States was 1 of only 4 nations, of a total of 173, that did not guarantee some measure of paid maternity leave and, even more, significant, all other developed countries provide new parents rights to paid time off from work, and these entitlements often last well into early childhood (Ruhm, 2011). The simple truth is that from the moment of birth, children are learning the intelle |

Stereotype of "Pot Heads"
In my research proposal, I have conducted research on "Potheads" and the negative connotation that is associated with the name and the subculture. I believe that being a pothead is looked down upon in mainstream society due to how media interprets this specific subculture. Potheads are people who smoke weed in groups or by themselves. There are many people that use it for medicinal purposes and religious purposes but they are still considered Potheads. According to Dictionary.com, a Pothead is "a person who habitually smokes marijuana." It is what makes them a subculture, the subculture of smoking weed. My research has a lot of importance to help shed some light on the typical stereotypes of what a Pothead really is. The way the media portrays being a Pothead does not account for everyone who smokes weed. If we continue to be ignorant about this specific subculture then we will never truly learn to understand each other not only as a community but also as |

A Look at Non-Fiction Texts
?Non-fiction texts are texts that are true and not, in the simple sense, fictitious. Non-fiction texts record things that actually happened. However, while non-fiction texts may aim to be objective and factual, the truth of a person's life can be colored and distorted by the purposes and perspectives of the author. The subjective experience of people involved in the circumstances and events being re-told and reconstructed. In the book, "Anna's Story", 15 year old Anna Wood, living in Sydney's northern suburbs and attending Forest High School, did in fact die tragically on 24 October 1995, three days after taking an ecstasy tablet at a rave party. However, while the reader is presented with honest and deeply-felt accounts from the principal people involved in Anna's shocking loss of life, Bronwyn Donaghy conveys these 'facts' through narrative perspectives, emotive language and rhetorical devices which means that the story of Anna's life is not told |

Brothels and Convents During the Renaissance
In this essay, I will focus mostly on the regulation of both convents and brothels in the time of Shakespeare and the Renaissance. Ruth Mazo Karras', "The Regulation of Brothels in Later Medieval England," focuses exactly on this topic throughout England and other European countries during the Renaissance. In regards to the convents I will be looking closely at an article entitled "Subjects on the World's Stage: Essays on British Literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance," written by David G. She scolds Sam that she wants respectability and the right thing for them would be to get married so that everything would be legitimate. Clean Up America!
Although we may not notice it, carbon dioxide is constantly released into the atmosphere each day. Throughout the world, people rarely think twice about what we are doing to the environment in our daily lives. As drivers, it is easy to become accustomed to the impact that liquid petroleum has on our necessary traveling sources. Because of this thoughtlessness of others, I decided to research alternative fuel choices. I believe that the United States should further encourage the use of alternative fuels on all automobiles in order to provide the world with a safer and more beneficial way of transportation. The United State's problem right now is that we are producing cars that are destroying our atmosphere and our planet. The amount of greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere is harmful. Lerner's article, "Alternative Fuel Impacts", lists and describes the pros and cons of each type of alternative fuel: Biodiesel, Ethanol, and Hydrogen. The article proved to be helpfu |
