             Alcoholism is one of the many similarities found in the movies, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and A Streetcar Named Desire. Brick, a character in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Blanche and Stanley, both characters from A Streetcar Named Desire, all deal with alcoholism. Both in search for something that will help them turn away from their problems and forget. A way out. Alcoholism is a theme commonly shown in these two movies.
             After the death of a good friend named Skipper, Brick, an ex-football player, withdrew from the world, and turned to liquor. Liquor was Bricks way of hiding from the family drama and at the same time he was resisting the affections of his wife, Maggie. The favorite son and mourned lover, Brick possessed the charm of those who have given up on everything. He embodied that of the untouchable, self-possessed, self-contained, intact man. But at the same time, Brick was obviously a broken man, a lost soul.
             From the very beginning, Blanche is somewhat a "fallen woman" in society's eyes. She has lost all that was once hers. Her family fortune and estate are gone, she lost her young husband to suicide years ago, and she is a social outcast due to her indiscrete sexual behavior. Meanwhile, Blanche also suffers from a bad drinking problem, which she covers up poorly. Blanche is an insecure, aging individual, who lives her life through lies. Depending on male sexual admiration, Blanche uses men and young boys for her sense of self-esteem. In order to hide and cover up her many problems, Blanche drinks constantly.
             Stella, Blanches sister, is married to Stanley who also suffers from a bit of a drinking problem himself. Stanley possesses a love of work, fighting, and of sex. He suffers from a bad temper and is known to be quite violent. These characteristics are more vividly shown when Stanley has been drinking. Stanley shows no remorse for his brutal actions in anyway.
