Themes in Night

             In the book Night by Elie Wiesel there are many themes some of theses themes are
             The two themes I'm going to talk about today are death and survival.
             Death is a theme which was used throughout the book. It was shown through the loss of loved ones, especially when Elie lost the majority of his family to the concentration camps. It was also shown through constant torture that went on, and the putrid smell of dead bodies penetrating in the prisoner's nostrils.
             The smell came from the crematory where you ended up if you didn't survive selection. The crematories was also where Elie saw innocent children die. Eliezer witnessed many deaths throughout his imprisonment in the concentration camps. From that of Juliek whom had played a concert to the dying men and whose corpse was overwhelming to Elie. To Elies own fathers death which is perhaps the saddest of all. Struck down with dysentery Elies father lied calling to him Elie ignored his cries and his father was struck in the head calling to him just once more which Elie ignored for fear of being struck himself. The next morning Elie woke to another invalid in his fathers bed. His father had been taken to the crematory before he had woken.
             Another element of death shown in Night is the Kaddish. The prayer of the dead.
             "Someone began to recite the khaddish, the prayer for the dead. I do not know if it has ever happened before, in the long history of the Jews, that people have ever recited the prayer for the death for themselves." The khaddish is also mentioned when Akiba Drumer ask prisoners to recite the khaddish after his death.
             The farter the prisoners live for themselves, the faster they die. Or so it seems the Germans believe. Elie is told when his farther is ill to instead of giving his father part of his ration to take his father's for himself. Which brings me on to the next them
