Helen Keller

             Helen Keller was a deaf and blind child, yet very smart. At the age of 6 months she began talking, she said wah wah. When she was 18 months old she developed an illness that left her deaf and blind. Her parents were mortified. As she got older she became more and more trouble. They had a great deal of pity for Helen because of her disabilities. They would never punish Helen for her behavior; they would just reward her for good behavior with candy or cake to keep her quiet. Her parents would never make her do anything she didn't want to do. Because of her lack of discipline she was always very dirty. That was before Annie Sullivan came.
             When Helen's parents decided to hire a teacher for Helen they got Annie. Annie used many different techniques to teach Helen. In one case, in scene nine act two, she used jealousy. In many other cases she would give or let Helen smell something then take it away and spell it to her. Annie would then expect Helen to spell it back to her and then she would get the object. Annie also used repetition.
             Annie was very smart in her means of teaching Helen. Helen was only six when Annie came to be her teacher. At that age Helen was still very curious. One way she taught was by using her curiosity and jealousy. Annie took Helen to the garden house because after breakfast that morning Helen would not let her touch her and she needed to be able to touch Helen to teach her. Annie's first night in the garden house with Helen was an important one (they had Percy there to run errands for them). That night Helen would still not let Annie touch her. Helen was hiding under the bed so Annie called in Percy to play "the game". The game was when Annie would spell something into Helen's hand and if Helen could spell it back she would get the thing she spelled. Annie brought Percy to the end of the bed and played "the game".
