Violence against women has become a serious and rising problem. Women suffrage dates back to hundreds of years of ignoring it and accepting the violence. Men's abusive behavior towards their wives was condoned and encouraged in the past. Domestic violence is a widely spread epidemic affecting more than the one person. Children are amongst the most affected indirectly or directly. Children that are exposed to the violence are more at risk of becoming an abusive person than a child raised in a serene family. Why women stay in an abusive relationship is hard to imagine, although many do. Reasons for the tolerance of an abusive man is primarily because of the children and or economical support. Today society has realized that women that are in an abusive relationship sometimes suffer from "The Battered Wife or Women Syndrome." Breaking the cycle of battering starts from the acceptance that being abused is wrong and unacceptable. Although that may seem easy to understand for anyone, a battered women has suffered so much over an extensive period that they begin to accept and even excuse the painful maltreatment.
For many the classification of a battered women is visible bruises and cuts. The definition of domestic violence is the infliction of physical abuse in any way that causes pain or injury. It is the voluntary action caused by adult men with whom they have or had an intimate relationship. However the definition for domestic abuse has broadened in recent years. The term now reflects not only physical abuse of women such as beatings, or pulling hair. It also includes psychological and emotional abuse. The United States Government defines domestic violence as coercive behavior through the use of intimidating, threatening, harmful, or harassing behavior.
