             Alcohol Related Crime on College Campuses
             A few years ago at Towson University, an intoxicated student attempted to gain access to a residence hall in order to visit a friend (Siegel). When the student worker at the entrance stopped him from reaching his destination, the drunken student sent the employee for an overnight hospital stay (Siegel). After a university hearing, the student was suspended from Towson, in addition to receiving criminal charges (Siegel). This excellent example of a violent act on campus illustrates how drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can rob an individual of the integrity that he might value. When college students partake in the consumption of alcohol on campus, they put themselves and others at risk for committing crimes that they would normally not do when sober, therefore disregarding all sense of integrity that they might usually possess.
             "Alcohol abuse is the No. 1 problem on every college campus in this country, and I don't care how big they are or how small they are (Associated Press)." Police Captain Dale Burke made this statement in 2000 regarding alcohol-related crime on college campuses. The Harvard School of Public Health performed a survey known as the 1999 College Alcohol Study. In this survey, 14,000 students from 119 colleges and universities were asked questions about drinking, and 44% of these students met the definition for binge drinking (NVAA Text 2000). Also found was that four in five students who lived on campus had experienced one or more of the repercussions of heavy drinking, such as assault, unwelcome sexual advance, and property damage (NVAA Text 2000). Nationally, 95% of violent crime at colleges is alcohol-related, and 90% of college rapes involve alcohol use by the rapist, the victim, or both (C.A.M.P.U.S. Data).
