This business case study research was completed to finalize
findings on different types of olive oils preferred by consumers in
Australia. The report's authors note their purpose as, "To obtain data on
the preferences for different styles of Australian produced olive oil from
different areas of Melbourne." Therefore, they undertook investigation and
research into various types of olive oil, its uses, and how consumers
perceived various types of olive oil. The olive oil business association
in Australia was particularly interested in the research, and so they have
The particular business problems under investigation included how
shoppers perceived different olive oils by taste, and by price. The four
types of oils sampled by shoppers were soft, strong, soft/sweet, and
medium, and all samples came from Salsi Ltd., a purveyor in the Melbourne
area. The study hoped to determine whether consumers preferred a soft,
sweet, or strong olive oil, and if they found the taste pleasant. Some
business problems discovered by the survey included some negative consumer
perceptions about olive oil in general (some thought it was unhealthy, and
others were turned off by the appearance of the oil, or by tasting it in
general). Clearly, the olive oil industry needs to create better consumer
awareness about its' product in Australia, if these consumers are average.
There were several parties (eight girls) conducting the research, and
their instructor at their school helped them create the project, and
