Internet resources refer to information available on websites and they must
be distinguished from articles available online. We need to understand that
not all information available online can be treated as an Internet
resource. This is because many magazine articles and research papers are
made available on the Internet for users but they are absolutely different
from information that we gather from websites regarding a certain topic.
For one, websites often give information without an author's name and
content is rarely copyrighted. Even if content is protected through
copyright, it is the website administrator who reserves the right to alter
the content and not some well-known author. Secondly website information is
not always very authentic and there is hardly any references given or
sources cited to back up the information.
The two sites that we consulted on PCB and water pollution were actually
good websites that contained valuable information about what was PCB and
how it could affect health. But we realized that while they were important
to get some basic ground-level information about PCB and its effect, they
should be used in a research paper only when other more authentic sources
are being used. Another thing to consider when selecting sources is the
topic of the research. If the topic is one that requires extensive research
then it is best to use websites only to gather some layman information,
however if it is one which requires little research and where personal
opinions can be given, then consulting or citing a website should pose a
problem. The websites we selected for PCB contained good information, which
was unfortunately not backed up by quotations or citations and therefore it
appeared like a good idea to use those websites along with journal or
