1.) During the times in which Wilde and Stevenson were writing their
novels, Victorian principles demanded that each individual act according to
strict cultural guidelines set forth by Queen Victoria, these being proper
conduct in manners and societal interactions, responsibility for one's
actions, respect for family and parents, and a strict moral code associated
with sex and the relations between men and women.

death and dying and how man's psychological make-up influences his
decisions and separates him from the lowers forms of life.
4.) In our times, there are some great differences between society and
behavior; in Victorian times, there was not so much of a concentration on
personal pleasures, especially those associated with sex, due to firm
religious beliefs and the strict tents of Victorian society that demanded
proper behavior from all persons. Also, the penalties for

not adhering to these tenets were harsh, such as ostracism from society
(Wilde ended up in prison for his sexual indiscretions).
