Los Angeles is a city in southwestern California, and is located on
the Pacific Ocean. In the United States, Los Angeles ranks as the second
most populous city in the country, second only after New York City. The
city's climate has two seasons only, which are summer and winter. The
extreme climate conditions in the city make it ideal for both industrial
and agricultural industries to proliferate and succeed in the city.
Demographic information about the city includes a multitude of immigrants
as its primary inhabitants and citizens. Because of better climate and
opportunities compared to other cities in the US, Los Angeles ranks as one
of the most developed cities, a metropolitan area where famous landmarks
such as Beverly Hills, Hollywood, University of California at Los Angeles
(UCLA), small immigrant communities, and beaches. The vast opportunities
for jobs, leisure, and recreation makes LA an ideal place for the working
or non-working individual. However, as a metropolitan area, LA experiences
serious environmental problems, such as traffic problems, air, noise, and
water pollutions, and the occurrence of earthquakes in the city (since
California is part of the country's earthquake belt). LA is a livable city
because of the environmental and industrial assets that it has. In order
to sustain its livability, the city administration formulates and
implements programs that aim to develop the city while not compromising its
environmental surroundings. Examples of these programs are traffic
regulations aiming to prevent vehicle congestion in the city's business and
commercial districts; water conservation to prevent exhaustion of the
city's water reserve, as well as prevent the occurrence of air and land
pollution as a result of water shortage; and building programs to decrease
the physical damage and deaths when earthquakes occur within the city.
