Tom Clancy is one of the most successful novelists today. Author of
numerous best sellers, smash hits such as "The Hunt for Red October" and
"Patriot Games" rallied him to the top, making him an overnight phenomenon.
Clancy's main character, Jack Ryan, who first appeared in "The Hunt for
Red October" has become a household name. Not only is Clancy a best
selling author, he has become a merchandising machine as a result of
numerous movies based on his books and the success of the Rainbow Six video
Tom L. Clancy, Jr. was born April 12, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland.
While an English major at Baltimore's Loyola College, he dreamed of writing
a novel someday.[1] Clancy worked as an insurance broker in Maryland until
the mid-1980's when the story of a Soviet frigate's failed attempt to
defect to Sweden, together with his deep interest in naval history,
inspired his first novel, "The Hunt for Red October."[2] Interestingly,
this novel was first published in an edition of about 14,000 copies by the
Naval Institute Press, making it its first publication of a work of
fiction, and considered somewhat of a gamble.[3] Then boom, it hit the
best seller's list and President Reagan hailed "Hunt" as "the perfect
yarn."[4] Prior to this publication, Clancy's collected writings numbered
one letter to the editor, a three-page article on the MX missile, both
published in the "Proceedings of the U.S. Naval Institute," and numerous
insurance policies.[5] Today he lives in Prince Frederick, Maryland with
his wife, Wanda, and four children in a house which, much like Jack Ryan's,
overlooks Chesapeake Bay on a cliff.[6] Clancy is a confirmed gun
enthusiast and has a rigid sense of right and wrong, stating, "good guys"
are children, surgeons and anyone in uniform and "bad guys" are politician,
