There have been a number of critical breaks in civilizations
throughout history. It is important to look at the English Reformation
which resulted when England broke away from Rome.
The English Reformation began when "Henry VIII summoned the

Reformation occurred due the "new learning - humanism. Eramus of Rotterdam
was one of the leaders, but he praised John Colet, who had returned to
England from Italy in 1497, bringing the Renaissance with him (www.st-

revived learning which resulted in criticism of the church. The printing
press was invented during this time, which "enabled Luther to stay put in
Germany and yet spread his ideas throughout Europe (www.st-
During this time, there was a "new piety that emphasized the poverty
and humility of Christ and tended to see the institutional church as a
betrayal of the Gospel (www.st-petersweb.org/lesson13.html)." These
factors resulted in the institutional church becoming undermined.
After England broke from Rome, there were religious, economic and
political changes. These changes included the "appearance of an entirely
new group of highly literate Protestants, whose attitudes, behavior and
religion differed starkly from the traditional norms of late medieval

further enhanced the importance of monarchs
