This study was conducted through an in person visit to a movie
theater on three different occasions. The researcher went to the
theater during an afternoon matinee, a weeknight showing and a
weekend evening showing. This method of study was chosen to present
a fair and pure ability to analyze the cultural aspects of using a
movie theater space. Each visit consisted of two movie sessions. The
purpose of the dual sessions was to provide the opportunity to
examine both the movie watchers and the lobby visitors during the
movie time. The researcher went to the movie the first time and then
sat in the lobby during the second showing for the purpose of
examining the cultural habits and actions of the movie goers in both
The ideology and commodity factors were also examined and explored
during this research study. Further exploration was conducted on the
elements that help structure the movie goers' experience in the

study. The entire movie theater experience up to the movie actually
being watched is an extremely social event in which strangers and
friends alike chat and laugh and enjoy the time they have together.
Once the movie starts the social aspect stops and the cultural
desire is to be lost in a story other than one's own.
The social culture of the movie theater space is interesting because
of its dual purpose. The ticket purchasing and the snacking as well
as the time spent leaving the theater are all used for connecting
with fellow humans, while the actual watching of the movie is a
