"The Witch's Husband" was written by Judith Ortiz Cofer in 1993. Judith Ortiz Cofer was born and raised in Puerto Rico, but lived most of her adult life in the United States. She is a writer whose works reflect her struggles with the Puerto Rican and American culture and what it was like to be a Latin girl living in the United States.
"The Witches Husband" is a story about the author's Abuela". Abuela means grandmother in Spanish. The story tells about how the author went to visit her Grandmother to discuss the possibility of having her Abuela allow the children to take care of her and to put her grandfather in a nursing home. Both of her Grandparents are very old and are basically unable to care for themselves. Her grandfather is very healthy, but suffers from dementia. Her Grandmother appears to suffer from heart problems. The author talks about her Grandmother as being a very strong person who has not only cared for her family all of her life, but has also taken the time to help others.
Before the author has a chance to discuss her plan with her Abuela, her Abuela begins to tell her a story about a witch who was followed one night by her husband. The story is really talking about why the Abuela decided to take a trip to New York many years ago, where she lived and worked for a year. One year in Abuela's earlier years, she decided to leave her husband and four children for an entire year to live and work as a seamstress in New York. Everyone thought that she had gone to New York because of her heart problems, but she really went there to work to find herself as a woman. She returned home because she loved and missed her husband and children and from that time on, she promised that she would never leave them again. So, before the author has a chance to discuss her plans to remove Abuela from the family, her Abuela tells her a story as to why she will remain with her husband to love and care for him until one of them dies.
