Oscar Mayer's Marketing Works

             The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the topic of American marketing. Specifically it will discuss why Oscar Mayer does a good job in marketing and advertising. Oscar Mayer could be one of the most successful advertisers of all time, because they have expanded their brand awareness throughout the world. Ask just about anyone, and they can tell you about the Weinermobile, or the catchy jingle "I wish I was an Oscar Mayer Weiner." In fact, the Oscar Mayer wiener jingle is one of the twenty most successful advertising jingles of the century according to Ad Age magazine (Locke, 2001, p. 68). Then of course is "My bologna has a first name...." All of these marketing innovations add up to a company that has been around for over 100 years, and is still one of the most popular and successful brands today.
             The Oscar Mayer Company, now a subsidiary of Kraft Foods, began as a meat market in Chicago in the late 1800s. By 1900, the three brothers were so successful they made home deliveries of their meats. Afraid other meat markets would copy their recipes and success; they branded their meats in 1904, and were one of the first meat companies to do so. In 1929 the name became "Oscar Mayer" and has been known by that brand name ever since. In 1906, the company was one of the first to volunteer for inspection by the newly formed Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS). In 1924, the company created the first sliced and wrapped bacon package, and in 1929, the company was the first to wrap their hot dogs with the company logo along with the U.S government inspection stamp. The company Website notes, "At a time when most wieners were sold in bulk, without any branding or packaging, the yellow band made Oscar Mayer Wieners instantly recognizable and assured consumers of taste and quality.
