The problem of violence in our schools is a serious issue in modern society. The problem of school violence has reached levels that necessitate intervention on many levels – including community and parental involvement. There is also a general consensus that preventative measures to curb school violence and to address the fundamental causes need to be implemented at a governmental and institutional level. The reason for this is the increasing number of reported incidents of various kinds of school violence. Some experts even claim that that forms of violence are becoming endemic in our schools. There have been increasingly disturbing reports of intimidation and even killings at American schools. One only has to think of the incident at Columbine High School to be reminded of the potential for violence that exists in many ordinary schools. The tragedy at Columbine certainly raised awareness of the problem of school violence in the country. However, what is less obviously recognizable is that these extreme forms of violence often have lesser precursors that are not given as much publicity but may be the underlying causes of extreme cases of violent behavior. One example of the underlying pattern of violent behavior at schools is the recognized increase in the incidence of bullying in schools in the country. Previously bullying was not seen as a serious threat but more recent studies have shown that bullying may in fact be a form of violence that precipitates and causes incidents such as those at Columbine.
This study will focus on the increasing evidence of violent behavior in our schools, the possible causes, and the various techniques, methods, and interventions which can be implemented to prevent and combat violence. Attention will also be given to the different kinds of violence that can take place at schools.
