Terrorism is a word that can strike fear in the most stoic person. For most Americans the word is associated with the events that occurred on 9-11 but for the rest of the world terrorists have been promoting their beliefs and ideas through acts of violence for many years. One of the most widespread terrorist organizations in the world is the Kurdish Workers Party.
The Kurdistan Workers Party is designed to fight for the right to govern the land that has been denied to them by the Turkish for many years. There are currently more than 30 million Kurdish population members who have no state which also strips them of any cultural, linguistic or political rights as are enjoyed by the rest of the world. For years members of that population have attempted to force the world to recognize their plight through the use of terror and violence. The members of the terrorist group call themselves the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Over the past few years the party has condoned and carried out acts of terrorism including the execution slayings of non-combatants as part of its statement against the current government and the civilians that it feels are supporting that government(Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) http://www.fas.org/irp/world/para/pkk.htm).
It was during the 1990's that the PKK made the decision to move out of the rural areas of attack and move into urban terrorism. It was a decision that did little to extract worldwide sympathy for their plight.
There are currently an approximated 5,000 members of the PKK which is based for the most part in Northern Iraq but is also reported to have several thousand sympathizers in Turkey and Europe. The sympathizers are considered as equally dangerous as members of the party for they are often willing participants in the setting up and execution of the PKK terrorist activities(Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) http://www.fas.org/irp/world/para/pkk.htm).
