A Brief Introduction to Verizon's History

             "We never stop working for you" is the slogan displayed by one of America's largest broadband and telecommunications provider that continues to amaze not only Americans, but the entire world due to its innovations and sustained efforts aimed at transforming communication into a "piece of cake" that anyone can chew. Based in New York and incorporated in Delaware, the company made its entrance on the telecommunications market on June 3, 2000, as a result of a merger between two U.S. based corporations – Bell Atlantic and GTE. But as any valuable child that is brought into the economic world belongs to parents having at least the same potential, it should be said that the mergerers mentioned above had been prominent figures of the American business landscape before the alliance took place. GTE was one of the world's largest telecommunication companies boasting revenues of more than 25 billion dollars, in 1999, and approximately 35 million access lines served through subsidiaries in the U.S., Canada, Dominican Republic and affiliates in Canada, Puerto Rico, Venezuela. Bell Atlantic was even larger, serving 43 million access lines and earning total revenues of 53 billion dollars. Consequently, Verizon couldn't have been doomed to failure considering its genetic traits. And indeed, at present, the company is highly appreciated on the U.S. wireline and wireless market with more than 100000 Americans joining its network daily. By the end of 2005, Verizon wireline network included over 48 million wireline access lines and 5 million broadband connections. It also encompassed 9.3 million miles of local, inter-city and long-distance fiber optics systems, a number that was big enough to circulate the Earth 390 times and to decimate all the U.S. competitors having a similar activity profile.
