When hearing the word "diversity," one normally does not think about senior centers or nursing homes. However, with the growing diversity in the United States, these places are becoming as multicultural and schools and other public locations.
This 90-minute presentation on diversity of senior citizens would start out with having the individuals who are in the audience look at their diversity. Ask questions about their nationality, religion, educational levels, outside interests. This will show how diverse a group of individuals can be. Then segment into the fact that the people in senior citizen centers can be just as diverse: Even ones located in small previously homogenous communities can be increasingly more diverse.
Now, present examples of ways that the seniors can be different in their backgrounds, interests, and mental and physical capabilities. Some may be very active, and others not at all. Some are very talkative, and others very quiet. Some people barely speak English. Some of the residents may talented and enjoy a certain interest, such as art or music. Others, may be more interested in gardening or cooking. Talk about how to conduct surveys to determine the characteristics of the senior citizen center. Then discuss specific ways to help the different special interests.
There are also activities that are of interest of all individuals, despite their particular hobbies. Again, ask the group to talk about some of the similarities they have, such as watching movies, eating, reading, etc. What kind of activities can be held that will be enjoyed by all the diverse groups noted above? It may be necessary having different levels of difficulty or activities put into different languages for greater participation.
