I am so glad that I live in the 21st century where as a woman; I could live the life I want and be the person I want to be. But it took generations and centuries for women to be emancipated from the clutches of a paternalistic or patriarchal society. Truth be said, women in some countries around the world are still in the 17th century with how they are treated by their own societies or religion that they believe in for that matter. Written and published at the close of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, The Yellow Wallpaper tells of an unnamed female narrator and her doctor husband renting a colonial mansion for three months in order for her to get well from her "supposedly mental disorder." She was given a room on the upper floor despite her wanting a room downstairs and the room she occupied had a yellow wallpaper and, "This wall-paper has a kind of sub-pattern in a, different shade, a particularly irritating one, for you can only see it in certain lights, and not clearly then (Gilman, 1899)"
The yellow wallpaper became an object of her obsession and the brewing tempest even though soothed at first took her on a journey from mild desperation to insanity. Her doctor-husband John have been comforting yet patronizing and condescending at times dictating to her how she should conduct herself and the daily routines she must adhere to in order to get well. As a woman, I could relate to this because while growing up, I had the same dictates given to me by my father or the different men in the society. Not exactly the term "blessed little goose," but other supposedly "terms of endearments" when in reality are usually means of letting them know what women's place should be.
